Keep in mind something I look for when buying books for my little boy is representation of a diverse group of kids, which is more and more being incorporated into children's stories.The cover art and the language choice led me to belive that the characters in the book would at least be diverse. I was wrong: although the language and sentence structure is a great read for my son, the characters in the book were not diverse which is quite unrealistic seeing as this language is spoken by a diverse population of people specifically in Nigeria. This book might work for some people who maybe don't know the language and are interested, but as a mother who is trying teach her child to be confident in themselves, and at the same time respect other cultures; this book to me was just CULTURAL APPROPRIATION OF THE HIGHEST DEGREE.Quite disturbing. NO RESPECT was given to the Igbo culture and the native speakers of the language. Apparently this company does the same book for different languages, which is wrong! You cannot take a "cookie cutter" approach to Children stories in a culture you are unfamiliar with because kids are extremely impressionable, you must pay homage to the culture and not make everyone white just to make $8.99 on a book sale.Even the Thai and Israeli versions look the exact same. They should at least try to change the characters and add unique cultural symbols because otherwise, regardless of their intentions, it seems like an attempt to whitewash somebody else's culture.

This was a disappointment to Igbo culture, I mean, seriously? Not a good read. The illustration itself is ridiculous. I was expecting much more of a true representation of the Igbo culture. This wasn't it.

Having started in Law Enforcement in a different major city about 8 years after Ralph Friedman, I found myself nodding and cheering him on as he discussed the mindset, processes and beliefs that officers operated under back in the day. So I am a fairly serious amateur photographer. And I love Scott Kelby books. I feel these books are aimed at photographers with at least a rudimentary understanding of the relationship between shutter speed, ISO, and aperture (f-stop). But if not, this series of books will still help you (more on that further down).So if you understand those three issues you got everything down at least in theory, right? Not exactly. In practice, it is very easy for you to get lost in the trees rather than see the 'big picture' no pun intended. Kelby's books brings practical tips to help you focus- okay I will stop with the puns but beware Kelby's puns are better (or worse??) than mine.For instance, Kelby will remind you that perspective is huge (ahem so is exposure- see the relationship mentioned above). If you can't get the shot your looking for- MOVE. Get under. Shoot down. Get Closer. Get Farther away. This is where understanding the relationship between ISO, aperture, and shutter speed will help to get a nice shot.There are sections of each book broken down by the type of photography you are interested in (sports, landscapes, portraits, etc) as well as equipment recommendations for every budget (well sorta- this is an expensive hobby).And for those who are new to photography, this is where these books will help you. In each section he gives tips such as which f stop to use, where to focus, how to frame the shot, etc. Typically, the photos included as examples list the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Further, at the end of book he provides you with recipes on how to recreate shots.I think these books best serve the novice to intermediate and possibly advanced photographer. For those starting in photography I do think these books offer quite a bit of value if for no other reason then you can start producing some pretty impressive shots. Further, he does an excellent job going through recommended equipment based on budget. Yup, you did it; you bought that big fat ($,$$$) daddy camera. It's got bells and whistles coming out of every corner. There are more buttons than you can shake a stick at. And yet... you only know how ti use it in "Auto" because every time you try to use those handy dandy buttons / features your pictures are terrible. Really, really terrible! STOP! Seriously, stop buy these books and put that camera to good use. Your photographs will get so much better!I can't say enough how much these books have helped my photography. I have highlights all over my Kindle versions for all types of things that I like to shoot. I just go to the highlight that fits my need and BAM! better pictures!Some reviewers have mentioned Scott's humor, I for one truly thank him for it. He's corny (totally corny), he's cheesy and yet he's kept a dry and somewhat boring subject fun! Seriously people lighten up! Lets face it there's only so much f5.6, ISO 100, aperture, shutter speed, you can read before you hear Charlie Brown's teachers voice in your head (WAH, WAH, WAH, WAH). The humor to keeps you reading!If you are like me and you just want to know how to take "X" type of shot or "Y" type of shot without having to understand a bunch of technical lingo these are the books for you. However, when you want to know the theory or understand more about why a photo did or didn't work you can read his concise (and humorous / corny) descriptions to gain the additional technical knowledge.My only, only negative would be to the publisher... Please for the love of heaven format the book to fit an iOS device! Like chapter headings at the top of the page instead of at the bottom!

I started shooting over 30 years ago. While I have always been enthusiastic about photography, I've never spent much time learning how to shoot better. I have followed some photo sites & blogs on & off, and a couple of friends are pro photographers, so I've picked up some things from them. Even so, I am finding Kelby's book series worthwhile. His writing style is easy and fun and the tips are easy to follow. I'm still on book 1, but I'm enjoying it. Many of the tips and insights aren't new to me, but they also haven't completely worked themselves into my DNA in shooting to the point that they are automatic, so the reminders are helpful. You really can't beat the price, and you are sure to learn some new things, or have some old, forgotten things brought to the fore. Highly recommended.

Ok I'm an old skool film guy originally. Digital is just a different tool. The books are really full of little tips that help you focus on your photography. I like the trend in these books to break down and show the setups and options you can try.It's all about playing folks. I'd say that as a set the value is pretty good. Glad I did not pay for each one. The first two are more dated, I believe book one is from 2006. As I have a Kindle and a tablet I tend to read on both. I suggest you use the Amazon Kindle app for these. Pictures in this book are pretty good and help you following along with what Kelby is saying. IMO his acknowledgements and forward are a little too much for me, but he does get to the meat pretty quick. All in all not bad. I suggest following Joe McNally. He's a much better photog and appears in these books also.

So... DevOps.DevOps is this mythical assembly line of progress that gets code from point A to point B in record time, and by record time, I mean no time. Coded, auto-tested, out the door, bing, bang, boom. The book was an entertaining read (and/or listen) and the authors cleverly couch the concepts of DevOps into a story about a failed delivery system (The Phoenix Project) built ala WaterFall, versus a new system hastily assembled (heh, see what I did there?) on an impromptu assembly line and delivered in record time, performing brilliantly - when compared to the failed behemoth Phoenix Project.So... here's the problem with DevOps, and the problem with this book.Companies with a nightmarish legacy code base (delivered or not as-of-yet out the door) that are attempting to build DevOps are using the same people that created their behemoth nightmare in the first place. As does the company in the hypothetical story in the book. Worse. The CEO in the book is a horribly bad boss, making wrong decision after wrong decision (I am sure to ramp up the tension to illustrate the saving graces of DevOps). So, I can tell you definitively that ANY company with leadership like that would lose their brilliant techs almost immediately. The market is in desperate need of brilliant techs so there is zero possibility that they are going to stick around a cess pool of politics when they can get a signing bonus and a raise from a company already doing it better and faster, and all without the drama. I'm just saying. And in order to pull off a DevOps operation, you absolutely need brilliant techs. You need tight, well executed product code with sufficient testing hooks so you can automate as you go. So you need brilliant QA that can understand and/or code the hooks right along-side the devs.In short, you need a whole lot more than a single Brent. You just do. And to imagine that there are a room full of brilliant techs writing broken down shoddy bloated code for Phoenix, but then can turn around and write the brilliantly architected code you need for the DevOps project... well... I am able to suspend belief when called upon, but this was more like taking it out back, shooting it, and burying it six feet under. I'm just sayin'.And with that being said, I am a huge, ginormous fan of DevOps (and the book was a FUN read / listen, thus the 4 stars instead of 3). It just takes an incredible talent pool to pull DevOps off and books like this makes companies think they just have to implement this process with the talent they have and poof! instant quality software that can be delivered instantaneously! Woohoo! They would be better served facing the reality of the mess they have, caused by (possibly) a lack of reasonable process, yah, but almost certainly by lack of talent as well. That's basically how they got where they got.Off soap box now. Doing the tango. Eating Oreos. Feel free to join!

The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.
