This book is a history of Operation Barney, the first large scale US submarine operation in the Sea of Japan during World War II. It is written by Charles Lockwood, commander of the US Pacific submarine fleet during the war. The writing is solid and the story of the adventures of the 9 submarines in the Sea of Japan is thrilling as Lockwood paints a vivid picture of the men and their operations as they traverse minefields, dodge depth charges, and stalk Japanese ships. I was left wanting more information on several topics touched on in the book, however, such as the US Navy’s struggle with faulty torpedoes in the early part of the war and the exact mechanics of maneuvering a submarine to get a good firing solution on a ship. Also, some maps would have been nice as I found myself constantly referring to Google maps to get sense of where the subs were operating. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

UNCLE CHARLIE LOCKWOOD WAS A SUBMARINER'S SUBMARINER. HE LOVED HIS TROOPS AND WENT TO BAT FOR THEM. THEY LOVED HIM IN RETURN AND SHOWED IT IN HOW THEY FOUGHT THE UNDERSEA WAR. THIS BOOK EXPLAINED HOW AND WHY THE SUBS WERE SENT TO PERFORM AN AMAZING DUTY. WELL DONE BOOK. NO FLASH OR RUFFLES AND FLOURISHES, JUST PLAIN TALK.

What a first class , well written account of operations of our boats in the Pacific. My uncle served on the USS Seal in the Pacific. I had the privilege of serving on the USS Hardhead in the late 60's. They were fine boats with outstanding crews. Every young man today should read this book.

Charles Lockwood brings another great vivid description of life of his submarine forces during WW2. It is very candid, intense, and detailed of how his submarine commenders and crew lived and died trying to stop the enemy from supplying troops by attacking supply and warships deep in enemy waters. I highly recommend this book to those who study those events or who want to learn how it really was being a WW2 submarine crewmenber.

Excellent read, opens a window in time and transports you to how life and death was in submarine warfare during WWII.

I completely enjoyed the book. My father was killed in WW II on board the USS Trout 28 Apr 1944. I have read every thing I could about the Trout as well other Subs but I never paid too much attention to the history of of the in the later part of the war. This book was well researched and well written. It was a hard book to put down. I strongly recommend Hellcats of the Sea to anyone with an interest in the history of WW II Submarines.

As far as the non-fiction WW II sub warfare books go this was a solid 7 on the one to ten scale. It was interesting to see how operation Barney evolved and was carried out by these true hero's.

Good Read. Many years ago I had the honor of meeting Admiral Sieglaff and his wife. I wish I had known at that time the contribution he made in our getting into the Sea of Japan!Wonderful read!

I could have not selected a better book. Sometime back in the 60"s @ about 14-16 years old I tried and succeeded in obtaining my Novice License I was a geek then. Because I did not have the funds to continue (a radio) I let it die. From 1975 t0 1982 I worked in the electronics industry designing circuit boards. Although Electronics theory was not necessary to do this drafting function it was convenient to be surrounded by brilliant Electronic Engineers and Technicians. I left this position in 1982 and pursuid a career in Business Management. Then in 1993 I told my wife I was going to attempt to try to get my Technicians ticket on a whym. ( I long since lost any credentials of my earlier endeavor. Low and behold I passed, but again put it on the shelf not to use my new ticket to talk on VHF. This time I i renewed my ticket as required so I am still current.About three weeks ago a neighbor also a Ham walked by and said you should upgrade, you do not need the code and you can talk to the world.. This got me thinking so I got on Amazon.Com ans searched for books.I found Buck's Book and ordered it.One week from the day I received it I took and passed my General exam test (they told me I missed 4 answers)I can tell you get the book, read it cover to cover two times (lite reading) take a online test once then go for it.It worked for me I am now General cant wait wait till his Extra Book comes out

Not enough time and radio is not a priority.I saw your post on Facebook and decided to give it a try. I am involved in education and I know the worst way to learn is to sit and "memorize". I decided to order your General book along with the Technician for my son. I read the General book over a period of 3 days. I love the way it is laid out...the answers in BOLD and no " fluff". Walked confidently into the the test session this morning. Literally 20 minutes later i received confirmation that I passed. I only missed 3 questions, and I am sure of which 3 i missed.... The darn digital questions...My son is reading your tech book and will sit for the test next month.Thank you for a quality, well thought out product.Revolutionary in the staid, boring HAM radio study world...

I have a really tough time learning for standardized tests. This book was the best aid I have used. I took paid online courses but things just didn't click. Seeing the wrong answer over and over makes no sense. The way this book is written really works well for me. The exam questions and answers are clearly written in book form and your learning as you go along. I found it a very enjoyable read that flowed well. It's not filled with tons of useless data but just enough to enjoy "the story" After you read the book form of the answers you then reinforce your knowledge with the correct answers only section. The end is the exam questions with the correct answers again! I'm a cheapskate lol but this was money well spent. Passed easily! Thx you very much.

Love this book. I read through the ARRL book but was not doing well on the practice exams. Seeing so many wrong answers with the right answers can be very confusing. I studied this book for a week and began reliably passing the practice tests. Finally took the real deal test and passed my General exam. The author has the right idea. By only showing you the right answer it is much easier to retain the info and not get confused. Highly recommend this series. Studying for my Extra now, and already bought the book from this series for my Extra.

Like you, I'm no dummy, but I am real life gets in the way, taking time from precious studying. It took me a while to get to this book but once I ordered it, I LOVED it and have since ordered the next in series for general. With great pleasure, I found myself going down rabbit holes with other material, but as time got tighter I realized that I still didn't know what I needed to know to pass the test. This was the ABSOLUTE best use of my time. I spent weeks driving up and down the coast listening to other material, took the train many times studying on-line quizzes. This was simple, the best, really fun too. How much of it was made easy by my aimless work before, I can't say, but I honestly believe that I should have just gone straight to this book and not wasted time on other plans. I found the online quiz super helpful to monitor my knowledge retention so I would recommend keeping that too. I just have to say that positive reinforcement- esp ONLY getting the right answers, was best for me, and at this price, might be best for you too.

Teaches you what you need to know for the test, without a lot of extra information to confuse your brain. I took the tech and general back to back, and the correct answers just popped out to me. I used this book plus hamstudy.org. I also took a shot at the Extra (because, why not, it's already paid for), and failed as expected.

I'm almost done with this and may swing back to the beginning and start again. I love the selected essays, as many are VERY relevant today. Bravo to the author. The difference between this and after the fact reported history is that the authors of these essays were LIVING in the history at the time they wrote on the various topics. It's a more personal, enlightening view of that era and how things REALLY were, rather than filtered and reported on later. I learned a LOT, laughed and winced a lot too.

I came to order this book because I love reading about the 1920s, I love readings by Dorothy Parker and I respect that the publishers of Vanity Fair had a pretty good grip on what they were about. Positioning this book on your shelves it probably belongs right next to I REMEMBER DISTINCTLY, written in the early 1930s about the 1920s.

This is an interesting look back at the language, politics, social dynamics and significant events of the period. It's fascinating to see what changed and what stayed the same.

I love this era, the F. Scott Fitzgerald era of flappers and socialites from about 1900 through the 20's and on. Most of the articles are amusing and witty (some are serious but still good); it's a great sociological study of how people really thought back then. A great book and a great gift idea for anyone who loves this era!

Everything I expected it to be.

So many of my favorite things in one book. Short stories, pre-World War II era, New York City. Great, prolific writers. I highly recommend it.

Get a taste of the wit and wisdom that the English language is sorely missing today. Get a sample of some of the finest humor, bar none, as you read Dorthy Parker and e e cummings. I cannot praise this book with anything but superlatives !!

I am a nostalgia buff, especially when it comes to literature. If this is your thing, and you have an interest in writers who ruled the page in the early to mid 1900's, this is a collection of writing from Vanity Fair magazine that you will love. I only received my copy last week, and I'm more than halfway through it. Its absorbing articles put me smack dab in the middle of the decade's culture and happenings. Relax and enjoy. This collection is a treasure.

I don't think it will be an exaggeration to say that it will be one of the most important books this decade on Singapore. Every person interested in policy making, being an active citizen, or in Singapore affairs should go buy this book. For USD 9.99 for the Kindle version, this purchase is a no-brainer. The writers show how, after 40/50 years of success, what's needed now for Singapore is not to keep doing things the same way, but to return to fundamental values and ask basic questions so that we can be as innovative and effective in policy making as we once were.The focus in Singapore has traditionally been on the pursuit of economic growth, but this book shows is that Singapore's conventional mode of thought that economic policies can and should be divorced from political and social policies is mistaken; that in fact getting social policies right can be as important to economic growth as industrial policies.You don't have to agree with the writers to enjoy the book. It's more than enough that they help to frame a problem differently so that we can explore better solutions.I particularly enjoyed Thum Ping Jin's essay on how the current political environment in Singapore parallels what existed towards the end of British rule, which showed that a politically vibrant society is both viable in Singapore and beneficial for long term survival.That being said, because the rest of the book is so good, I do wish that there had been 1 or 2 more essays on the economic challenges facing Singapore included (besides the one by Linda Lim), especially since I used to work for EDB then MTI. However, I was told by one of the writers that they had to be selective in culling the number of essays, and that there could possibly be a volume 2.This book leaves me hopeful for Singapore. Every civil servant should read this book.

Singapore has done well in the past 50 years. However, I agree fully with the observation that source of our success can also be our undoing. Unquestioning meritocracy, social inequality and the vulnerability syndrome can limit our future generations.A book that dares Singaporeans to have belief that the foundation we have built allows for us to be a great city state for he future not by being more of the past but to be aspirational and really build a new social compact that will make us all strive to make it a home that both the young and old can live happily in a trusted engagement with fear that our future is constantly under threat.

A realistic and factual compilation of papers articulating the real situation and challenges facing Singapore today. Whilst it gives us an understanding of how we got into our current position, it also attempts to offer alternative solutions, from the author's perspective of course, on the way forward. A definite must-read for anyone who is interested in the future of Singapore and I certainly hope to see more of such discussions and debate in open forums involving the ruling elite and her people to forge a way forward for the future of the nation.

The essays in the book are good arguments on Singapore's current political climate. However, the quality of the write-ups are similar to what I would find on social media, seemingly put together into a published book. Why the writers chose to publish a book containinga a series of essays is beyond me. This isn't poetry.

The opening line of this book is as follows:"Singapore's economic success masks some uncomfortable truths about life in this city-state."The chapters cover a wide range of topics, from economics, to inequality, to land mass / population challenges, housing policies, democracy, meritocracy, as well as the concept of defining a national identity.Historian Thum Ping Tjin's chapter, "The Old Normal is The New Normal," is hard-hitting for it demonstrates how the lesson of history is clear, that "only democracy, dissent, and diversity can offer the leaders and ideas required to meet Singapore's challenges."In Chapter 12, Donald Low analyses what went wrong for the PAP during the 2011 General Election (GE 2011). He writes that the Singapore population is becoming "more demanding of transparency [and] accountability." The chapter also suggests that political reforms "founded on the virtues of fairness, equality and resilience" will help sustain Good Governance.Donald Low ends off the book on a personal as well as social note. He concludes:"As a liberal, the policy and institutional changes I wish to see are those that would make Singapore a more just city-state, one that prioritises the well-being of its citizens over narrow measures of economic progress."The biggest strength of Hard Choices is the diplomatically critical tone throughout the writing. The style is moderate and objective without being too inaccessible to the general reader with an interest in Singapore's politics and/or policies.It is this consistency throughout the chapters which renders the writing as effectively persuasive, in terms of why Singapore needs to undergo vital and constructive change in terms of governance. This happens to coincide with a new generation of Singaporeans that are "empowered by the internet and social media," which as Mr. Low and Sudhir Thomas Vadaketh write in the preface, has enabled citizens to "openly question many of the PAP's long-held assumptions and beliefs."I would definitely recommend Hard Choices to people who may find "anti-government" or "anti-establishment" websites a bit too critical. I believe more than a few Singaporeans would be able to appreciate the book's presentation of a wide range of pertinent issues, along with real alternatives that should be considered for the betterment of the nation and its citizens.After all, it's hard to argue with cool hard logic.

I don’t often read travel books – but I’m glad I read this one. And soon, it was hard to avoid making comparisons with Eric Newby, Fitzroy Maclean and John Masters. But why bother? Bard Wilkinson, so different to them, I’d hazard a guess, and wise beyond his years, has his own distinctive style; perceptive, calm, compelling, great humanity and an engaging absence of ego.One is immediately drawn into why this part of the world got into his blood during his youth – and remains there. Later, he returns as foreign correspondent for The Daily Telegraph. His brushwork describing sensory aspects such as sights, sounds and smells, is richly hued. Moreover, passages about places, Chitral in particular, a visually stunning part of northern Pakistan, and some of the characters he encounters, are both fascinating and enchanting. (The redoubtable Wilfred Thesiger wrote that an aspect of Chitral was ‘probably the finest view I had ever seen in my life’.) The author describes much that, to my surprise, still exists as I had seen it as a mere passer-by in 1970 – though tragically the relentless encroachment of toxic political and religious influences now threaten to extinguish the magic of its diversity and tolerance.As foreign correspondent, he inevitably is witness to scenes that are savage, vivid and shocking. Nevertheless, he distances his cameos from hyperbole and melodrama. I think this is part of the author’s innate modesty and courage; there is no doubt that some of his experiences involved great risk. If you went looking for serious trouble in his bailiwick at the time, it wouldn’t take you long to find it. Well, it was often his job. And sometimes this also involved interviewing some quite nasty people.Again, he characteristically skates over the dangers of a stint in Afghanistan which terminates in a military hospital in Camp Bastion, Helmand province, due to a daunting illness which had plagued him for years. (Whilst there, he witnessed an ungrateful Taliban patient running amok ‘trying to kill the first person at hand’.)I was impressed by the author’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the region’s history, culture, traditions, and personalities – which, quite apart from anything else, makes this a must-read for those requiring invaluable insights in the region and some of its personalities.I read this nicely crafted and poignant book with a mix of nostalgia, envy and respect, feeling rather sad to reach the final full-stop. I did find myself wishing the book was an iPad App because there are so many links to their website. Rather than having to print out the checklists and forms from their website, a flipper could just pull them up on their iPad or tablet while on the job site. Perhaps they're working on an App...

I am about half way through this book and LOVE it. We have rehabbed many properties but are just now getting into flipping them and this has made me think of things I never would have thought of on my own!

Made the mistake of spending $2K to go to a Scott Yancey three day workshop where I could have just purchased this book and learned how to flip from A - Z. I am 3/4 of the way through the book and they provide a step by step process from where to find the property, how to approach the seller, estimating repair costs, making the offer, etc. I recommend this book to read, re read and take notes.

First, I must say that this is so far the best book I have read on this subject. The authors seem to be very experienced and knowledgeable in the field of rehabbing homes. I am very pleased with what I got for $15 (or whatever I spent). I feel that with this book, I could successfully FLIP homes. My first primary home was a fixer upper, and I did pretty much all of the work myself. I turned a nice profit when I sold it, but I think that I could have done better had I known then what I know now.There was not a lot of information that was new to me, but the book did bring together a variety of related topics. Likewise, the authors presented a few smart systems for completing the project.The reason I gave this book only 4 stars is that I don't like the writing style of the authors. This book could have easily been 150 pages or less. The font was a little big, and there was WAY too much worthless text, random anecdotes, and stupid analogies. One page in particular was about Punxsutawney Phil...it wasn't until the third or fourth paragraph that the author crafted some way of connecting that to flipping houses.Overall an excellent book worth every penny (the authors need to stick to flipping houses though). I wish I could get my friend who has recently jumped headlong into rehabbing houses to read this book...

We get to better know the characters we came to love – or not – in Darkwater Secrets with a plot that hits the ground running.Addy is General Manager of Darkwater Inn, a luxury, historic hotel in the French Quarter. It is owned by Claude Pampalon, who groomed his son Dimitri to be the CEO, a position he doesn’t want. Instead, Dimitri is the chef at the Inn’s renowned restaurant. His half sister Lissette, daughter of a woman Claude had secretly seen, has been confirmed as Claude’s daughter. Dimitri helped Lissette get on board to learn to be CEO of the Inn and, due to the inheritance laws unique to their state, will share Claude’s estate with Dimitri they thought.Approximately an hour after discovered, Addy learns of a hack into the computer systems. She hurries to see if the vault has been compromised when the security team is unable to get a response from the guard posted there. The potential romance she put on hold almost a year ago still awaits her attention. Beau, who she has known since childhood, has loved her for most of her life. Dimitri hasn’t known her as long, but he also is in love with her. They are each aware of the other’s feelings and awaiting her decision of who she will go out with. Since I like both, it is hard to guess which one she might choose! Addy had been in Europe for several months of special training, and had taken a long assessment of the direction she is going in. Dimitri is a man of faith, and he prays for all concerned with the circumstances. In that respect I think he would be a good choice.There are exciting plot twists throughout that continually change the landscape of the story. It is a challenge to determine who was behind each – or all – of the crimes, and there were definite surprises. This is a highly-satisfying novel that reminds me all over again how much I love this author’s work. This brings the novel to life and the reader can picture exactly what the character sees. She is in top form here. Adelaide Fountaine, general manager of the Darkwater Inn, has just returned from a six month time away when she is informed that the security of the inn has been hacked, two murders have been committed and a priceless royal tiara has been stolen. What? The princess to whom the tiara belongs is staying at the inn to ride in a parade but how can she without this tiara? And how did all this happen, anyway? Was more stolen than the tiara and cash? As sometimes is the case, things are not exactly what they appear in the Darkwater Inn.Detective Beau Savoie, who has long held a torch for Addy, is called in to investigate, and is having a hard time dealing with the fact that the owner's son, Dimitri, who is a chef at the inn, also cares for Addy. But first, these murders, the hack and the heist must be solved.Caroll ramps it up in this second book in the series, adding more layers every few chapters, till the reader is clueless. I had no idea the culprit. Then, there is more to solve when Addy is kidnapped! How does Caroll do it? How does she create such intense drama with such intrigue? I was all in from the very start and I can't wait till the last book in the series. I think all Caroll's readers want to know which man Addy will choose, too. I know I do! Team Beau all the way here!
