The Condition of Secrecy

Review

“One of Scandinavia’s finest experimental poets, Christensen’s probing, questioning, hopeful voice was an important one and is missed, but we can still hear it in this provocative book. A poet who was definitely not living in an ivory tower.” - Kirkus“Christensen is at her most intriguing when posing questions, as when she wonders, 'Does art originate from the same necessity that gives rise to beehives, the songs of larks, and the dances of cranes?' and asking whether it is possible to write poetry that is compelling if read 'out loud to a cockroach?' These borderline silly yet profoundly imaginative questions make for a thought-provoking reading experience.” - Publishers Weekly“Like all Christensen's writing, The Condition of Secrecy aims to be a history of no less than everything: the origins of the stars and our souls, the beauty of fractals and of third-century Chinese poetry. It is a book about eating strawberries, witch-burning and the challenge that the soft, scumbled sides of clouds pose to geometry. It’s about standing in the garden and watching yellow slugs 'moving like slow flames' in sunlight. It’s a hectic kind of erudition that could easily seem showy, but in these essays we experience it as a kind of abundance, an outpouring of love for the world. Nied’s clean, musical translation helps. There is nothing knotty, nothing strained. The arguments radiate outward with the measured rhythm of ripples in water.” - Parul Seghal, The New York Times“Inger Christensen manages to make wit, passion and questioning, and astonishing design serve each other’s ends as one, and she does it in a way that is utterly her own.” - W. S. Merwin

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw (Book 3), by Jeff Kinney

From Publishers Weekly

The third book in this genre-busting series is certain to enlarge Kinney's presence on the bestseller lists, where the previous titles have taken up residence for the past two years. Kinney's spot-on humor and winning formula of deadpan text set against cartoons are back in full force. This time, Greg starts off on New Year's Day (he resolves to "help other people improve," telling his mother, "I think you should work on chewing your potato chips more quietly") and ends with summer vacation. As he fends off his father's attempts to make him more of a man (the threat of military school looms), Greg's hapless adventures include handing out anonymous valentines expressing his true feelings ("Dear James, You smell"), attempting to impress his classmate Holly and single-handedly wrecking his soccer team's perfect season. Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the "racket" children's book authors have going. "All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book." Greg, self-centered as ever, may be the exception proving that rule. Ages 8-12. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

For those wondering why tween boys don’t read very much, the answer is that more books aren’t like this. In this third (but not last, despite the subtitle’s implication) series entry, Greg Heffley, the Georgia Nicolson of American middle-school males, is just trying to get through life. In hilarious diary entries, he details his attempts to get along with his brothers; a potential romance; and his dad’s futile efforts to turn him into a jock, which reinforce Kinney’s well-realized theme that grown-ups just don’t get it. While diary may not be the most macho term, as Greg will be the first to tell you, the format certainly hooks the target audience with its printlike font, straightforward language, and copious cartoons. As the book opens, Greg is eschewing New Year’s resolutions: “It’s not easy for me to think of ways to improve myself, because I’m already pretty much one of the best people I know.” And while it is clear to all that he is no saint, he is real, and many kids will agree with that self-assessment. Grades 5-8. --Andrew Medlar

This book is exactly what I have been looking for! I bought all of the books in the set for my little brother, for Christmas, and I couldn't be happier with my find. All of the books were in brand new condition and the prices were unbeatable. I decided I had to get my brother the whole set for Christmas, since they are the only books that he's ever taken an interest in. In fact, not only was he interested in them, he was absolutely enthralled! From start to finish, I think he only put book #1 down to sleep. So, I thought he just has to have the rest of them one, so that he'll keep going. I'm so glad that I found these books.

Reading is getting so lost today and being replaced with gaming, laptops, IPods, Iphones, Wii the list goes on. I believe getting into books for the joy of it lets you build imagination at all ages. We got these books for my 11 year old God child and she loves them. These books have inspired her to move onto other books, this book set is great as a unisex read too, my little brother loves them too we would read every night I read a page and then he reads a page. TIP - NEVER EVER use reading as a punishment! They are safe fun books for all ages.

The diary of a wimpy kid series is engrossing, comical, and in my opinion, content appropriate for young readers. I bought these books for my 8 year old boy ( who thought reading was a chore, boring and only involves school work), he is now on book 8 in under 4 weeks! He even takes a copy to school and reads at recess. Thanks to Jeff Kinney my son now considers reading FUN!

Bought a new Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas for a 9 year old to encourage reading and this was the first book she wanted on it. The font would not change. I did chat sessions with Kindle and all the troubleshooting. It turns out the publisher has set the font and will not allow kindle to override the settings. So it's very difficult to read, especially for a child with some visual problems. According to Kindle support, most books can be changed, even when the publisher has set the font, but for some reason, this one will not allow that. Not good!

My 9 year old has been reading this series for the past year and he loves them. They were too hard for him at 7 but at 8 he really started picking them up and now at 9 he still likes to read them. He will pick one and read it in a few days to a week during reading time at home. They aren't the most challenging but during the summer it is keeping him reading so I don't mind. If you find your child liking these books I would recommend buying several. I think we have the entire series at this point.

My son loves the wimpy kid books. The book was in great condition, I don't know why people would buy new books anyways. I ordered two books from the same company and they were sent together but I had to pay separate shipping doe noh which I found to be odd but considering the books were under a dollar each I suppose that is how they make the money. Overall they are good books that I would purchase again and I will probably order more in the future.

My daughter is 7 and htis is her first chapter book. She really enjoys it. I actually started reading it myself and I have to say that I enjoy it a lot. The writing is funny to me and I am close to 40 years old. The themes in the book resonate with kids today and of my own youth. Great books and looking forward to the series.

My eight-year-old son has been reading this series, and he loves it. The stories are fresh, well written, and engaging. We highly recommend them. If you haven't read any of the books, be sure to start with book one and work your way through the series. That way you won't miss any of Greg's middle school antics.

#12,833 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is a book where I had actually seen the movie first, which then made me want to read the novel. The circus seems to bring out the optimistic and wide-eyed child in us all, and this story was no different. You come to care about the animal and humans alike in this novel and find yourself wrapped inside their world before you know it. I fairly much inhaled this book over two evenings, and seeing the movie didn't curb my sense of excitement and mystery as I worked through the story. At the end I had the thought, yet again, that we all seemed to be doomed nowadays to reaching our end of life years and being forgotten by our families regardless of how amazing our former selves have lived our lives. This book helps to remind us all that ordinary people have extraordinary tales to tell if we would just bother to slow down and listen.

Author, Sara Gruen is an excellent novelist. I read Water for Elephants a few years ago and from time to time, I reread my favorite novels. This novel is one of them. While I enjoyed the movie with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, the novel is far better.Sara’s research on traveling Circuses during great depression is richly detailed without overtaking the essence of the story or characters. The novel opens with ninety year old Jacob Jankowski ensconced in a dreary nursing home. He’s grumpy and taciturn. The food is bland and the old ladies are to him, a gaggle of hens. More and more, Jacob finds his thoughts turning to the past and the life he once lived long ago as a circus vet. Jacob remarks that he is ninety or ninety-three, but at his age, he is not longer counting. We are drawn into his memories and so the story begins. When Jacob’s parents are killed in an auto accident, he is forced to leave his last year at Cornell where he’d been studying to become a verternarian. Penniless, he hits the road and hops a train that happens to be the Benzini Brothers traveling circus. He is hired as the show’s vet.Jacob faces danger on a daily basis, not only because of his growing attraction to Marlena, the beauty who is the star equestrian act of the circus, but because of her husband, August, a ring master who is a bully and quick with a jealous, evil temper. These are hard times and circuses are failing. The boss, Big Al, who decides the life and death of many of the hired hands, desires an elephant, a trained elephant that can bring the rubes (hapless townspeople) into the big tent.Big Al gets his elephant. Her name is Rosie and she doesn’t seem to understand any directions at all. She’s sweet, but gets into trouble. August, the bad tempered husband of Marlena, cruelly beats Rosie to get her to perform. Jacob finds that Rosie does not understand English. Her former trainer was Polish. Together, Jacob and Marlena strive to protect and save Rosie. August sees their attraction and attempts to get Jacob Red-lighted, which means to be thrown of the moving train at midnight. No spoilers here.Water for Elephants is a fascinating read, filled with danger, acts of evil, overwhelming kindness, and enduring love.I highly recommend this wonderful novel.

This book was amazing! I loved all the action and throughout the whole book, I was constantly thinking, what's going to happen next. There wasn't ever a time that I thought there was a boring part in the book either- hard to do, since it's so long.I can see how making a movie would be difficult since there was so many things going on, including all the animals. Your imagination is probably much better than the film (I've heard the film is not great, so I'll stick with my imagination on this one).I would totally recommend this book. I'm not a fan of the circus. Mostly because of how cruel they are to the animals, and I think this book shows exactly how it is. I don't think the author glamorized the circus much. There were points in the book that were hard to read since I'm such an animal lover, but I wanted to see how it all ends.I would even read this book again!

From the very first page I was hooked in this world that takes you back to a time when traveling circuses were the norm. The love story between Jacob and Marlena is one that will stay with you through time. Where at times it seemed like all they were handed was despair by the hand of August, they were each other's greatest find and salvation. They were also the salvation and rescue of lovable elephant Rosie. Sara Gruen's writing style is one that makes reality disappears and catapults you onto the Benizini Brother's menagerie train. At times the injustice may make you feel like you want to jump off but stay till end - it is beyond worth it!

I bought this book because of push advertising and regretted it. While reading “Water for Elephants “ I found the plot hyperbolic and excessively melodramatic and the characters little developed beyond their names. I was astounded at the lack of research which became clear when I read other reviews. I was also astonished at the number of readers who found the novel purient and cruel. I can only speculate about their usual fare.
