Explorer: The Mystery Boxes is a collection of seven short comic stories, each 15 to 20 pages long and in color. Every story features a mysterious box of some sort, and the collection is edited by Kazu Kibuishi, author of the Amulet series, which I love. In a few of the stories, the box is quite small. Usually, there's something inside. In a couple of the stories, the box is large, a spaceship, even. There is a lot of good in The Mystery Boxes; each story is very different, but the quality, at least for me, doesn't even come close to comparing to Amulet. Here are my ratings of the individual stories:"Under the Floorboards": Cute, and perfect for a child. ****1/4"Spring Cleaning": A little too kidsy. ***"The Keeper's Treasure": Stupid. *"The Butter Thief": Imaginative. ***3/4"The Soldier's Daughter": Deals with death, so it might not be suitable for very young readers. ***1/2"Whatzit": Very, very funny, and almost worth the collection by itself. ****3/4"The Escape Option": Done by Kibuishi himself. ****That averages out to about ***1/3, but this collection is better than the sum of its parts. For kids 8 or 9 to 12, it's ideal. As an adult, I have to rank it ***3/4

First of all I am an adult, and I purchased this for my kids. I read the short stories with that in mind....but....they just stink...all of them...they all seemed incomplete, overly simple, and boring...the artwork was "okay", but not memorable...the best story and perhaps the only one worth reading at all was the last one by Kibuishi...pretty sad..wish I could get a refund as the stories aren't worth sharing...I saw some of the other negative reviews but I thought they may have been overly critical...worthless

For those who have read Kazu's Flight series, this will definitely feel similar. This is basically an anthology of different comics from old and upcoming artists. It's a short read and shouldn't take more than an hour to complete. As a result, I feel this could have been expanded more to meet the quantity of the Flight series, but for the current price, it's still pretty decent. If you're like me, however, it's nice to just flip through each individual story, and there may not be enough stories here to satisfy. I still find this a good read for any monotonous occasion, and Kazu's cover art is radiant as usual. My favorite selections from this title would have to be Under the Floorboards, Spring Cleaning, and The Butter Thief. I wasn't too big on Whatzit, but that comes as a personal preference. Kazu's story was just okay this time around. All of the stories are pretty entertaining in their own way. Each of the books will deal with an overall different theme, so I think that's pretty cool.

My 8 year old love graphic novels. This was a great one in her age range. She read it in one day. Great book for that kid who is a good reader but doesn't love to read, as much as Mom would want. The graphic novels get her interest.

Our 9 year old daughter loves graphic novels and has read the Amulet series many times. This is a great change to another book with the same concept. Great colored pictures and perfect for her.

I started with the Amulet series, and am now a big fan of Kibuishi's work. This book is an anthology of his stuff and that of a bunch of his colleagues, but it's very good. The diversity between the different artists is a definite plus. Visually stunning all around.

My son discovered Kazu Kibuishi through his Amulet series. This series is awesome too. He's in second grade and he can't put the books down. Highly recommend for the reluctant reader.

My 7yo sat down and read this in one joyful sitting. LOVED it.
