Got the book for my 14yo who's in the school's JV team.The book is meaty in substance and gets very technical, which is good for serious players, however, there's just way too much text description that makes it hard to visualize and apply.The book would work well for coaches and trainers, as well as college-level athletes who are very familiar with terms and can visualize the content easily, but a bit daunting for everyone else.More quality images and illustrations will definitely improve this book a lot. Better layout within the pages would help too as not enough white space areas to break the long, long text blocks within the pages.Overall, as a guide, it has excellent content, as a book, it falls short in readability and practicality, hence the 3-stars.

About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. A must-have, obviously, for MIGNOLA / HELLBOY completists, this book is also an introduction to a) the creative process at work in artist MIGNOLA's mind, b) his quest for his unique style. Along the years, "less becomes more" as the emphasis is put on conveying a specific atmosphere in lieu of drowning the reader with details. Not that there is no details in the gothic surroundings of HELLBOY's adventures. There are plenty. The point is that MIGNOLA does not compete with artists in the "super hero" field but with himself. The books praises that. And is good at it.

Mike Mignola is the master of what not to put in a finished peice of art. While he draws loads of details with the original pencil lines as soon as the ink is applied, he buries them. What makes that technique work so well is that regardless of no evidence of the black flooded pencils the viewer knows the details are there. That masterful ambiguity is what makes the Hellboy art so creepy, menacing. From out of the shadows lurch horrors not meant for the eyes of humans. This is quirky, fun and scary without having to overwork the skilled designs and careful layouts. When I look at all the cartoony comic artists, with their minimalist leanings, and contrast them with the guys who insist on drawing every hair on a head while laying in invented overdone musculature that fairly bulges through a sweatshirt, it is refreshing to see Mignola's seeming ease and inpeccable black spotting that shapes even the things not seen, but definitely suspected, along with shambling ancient horror and explosions of combative violence in the defense of the human race against festering ancient evil.Words? In this book? My brain is full of words unread but ever present. That's Mike's other gift to me.My only question is when will we see a volume collecting his myriad other works?

Nice artwork, but there's not much more to it. I wish there was a bit more in the way of interviews, stories, etc.

If you love Hellboy, and love comic book art, you will cherish this behind the scenes look at the master at work designing and sketching out his creations. One of my favorite art books.

I love Mike Mignola's art. He has a brilliant style and this book definitely delivers. The images are mostly his well known covers and some some scenes from his comics. I just wish it had more of his sketches to see his thought process. Overall it's a perfect gift for any Mignola fan, and I do not regret buying it at all.

as a hellboy fan i had to buy this book. this tome of mignolas hell boy art is a great buy it features great black and white.color and unused art pieces. it shows the evolution of the character it has lots of concept art of liz sherman, abe sapien, and hellboy himself.this book proves one thing mike mignola is a genius his ability to make amazing works of art there are no bad words to be said about this book it is the most in depth look at a great character and a master artist

Anyone who appreciates Mike Mignola's unique art style will enjoy this book. Lot's of unpublished pieces in here that I had never seen before. Definitely worth a look!

Of the many meditations available on mindfulness and the brahma viharas, this one has been the most helpful to me in understanding and applying Buddhist wisdom. Throughout, Feldman makes it clear that kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are not feelings to be left to chance, nor even simply feelings to be cultivated. Kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are choices we make about the fundamental basis for action; and mindfulness gives us the space to return home to these choices moment by moment in a difficult world. In this sense, “home” can be seen as being more verb than noun – a dynamic refuge of intentional engagement with the world, as opposed to a static refuge that shelters from the world. Under Feldman’s perspective, one does not shelter in a feeling of kindness; rather, one intends to engage the world with kindness in every moment whether one feels it or not. The distinction may be subtle, but I think it is an important one when it comes to an understanding of what it means to cultivate kindness: it’s one thing to attempt to cultivate the feeling of kindness; but quite another to cultivate the intent to be kind. Maybe this has always been obvious to everyone but me … but up until Feldman’s, the brahma viharas meditations that I’ve encountered could easily be mistaken to imply the former just as much (if not more so) than the latter. Thank you, Ms. Feldman :-)

Superbly written. I have read nearly 200 books on Buddhism in the East and West. This is one of the top 5 I have read. It will speak to you if you are struggling with matters of the heart. Christina masterfully directs the reader through the four brahama viharas - kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. Excellent book. I've read it 3 times.

Very thoughtful advice regarding the human condition as well as concrete recommendations for meditations to develop the four "abodes" of the Brahma Vihara: Loving Kindness, Compassion, Empathetic Joy, and Equanimity. For those of us who are familiar with the treatment of the Brahma Vihara in the Visuddhimagga, this covers some of the same material but is far more expansive and readable for modern-day readers. Personally very useful for those on the Buddhist path or those who just want to improve their lives.

What a joy this book is to read. It reveals the deep wisdom in the 4 Immeasurables in such easy to read manner.Lifts the mood seeing the possibility of bringing love, compassion, joy and equanimity in our lifes or deepen it. If possible I would give 10 stars.A heart treasure by all means.

I got this book for a law school class on Sales and it was a life-savor. It was informative, to the point, explanatory, and down-right awesome (if a law school text can be awesome). The author is actually a modern day Einstein when it comes to the UCC, if you do not believe me Google him and you'll see he basically rewrote the UCC and is internationally known for his UCC and commercial transaction prowess.

I found Article 2 extremely hard to understand, and I've generally used the nutshell series for as my study aids. I was a little nervous trying something new, but I prefer this over then nutshell. It has a better approach to teaching the UCC.

This book will be more valuable than your casebook during your first year of law school. I would recommend reading it once in June or July before law school. It is short and easy. Then read it again during 1L.

This book easier to read and follow than the recommended CONTRACTS text books that are recommended by the law school.

This book was great for helping me understand/review Article 2. Some parts are bit more in depth than the material that you'll cover in an introductory contracts course, but it was still very helpful. I thought the part on remedies was especially helpful.

No doubt this is an excelent book on electromagnetism, but it is too old-fashioned to appeal to modern readers. That is not the only "problem" with this book, though. It is very concise (which is a good thing in these days of textbooks of literally thousands of pages), but sometimes seems to miss the point of its primary purpose, that is to teach undergarduates electromagnetism. For instance, you will not be able to solve most of the exercises (which are hard, btw, although very "physical") based solely on what has been said on the text, unless you are an exceedingly ingenious student. It is short of examples, formulae, and references, too.That said, you may be thinking that I am a fan of the EM book by Griffiths, but I am not!, despite it being a reasonably good textbook. If you want to dig into electromagnetism, pure and applied, but would like to avoid the "Happy Meal" textbooks out there, I suggest that you try first the book by M. Schwartz, "Principles of Electrodynamics" and then W. K. H. Panofsky & M. Phillips' "Classical Electricity and Magnetism," 2nd. ed., both by Dover at incredibly amicable prices. An alternative to Panofsky & Phillips would be the superb text by J. A. Stratton, "Electromagnetic Theory". I really believe that Schwartz + Panofsky & Phillips is a much more insightfull path to electromagnetism then the standard Griffiths + Jackson (oh, boy...) one.

Very dense read. However, if you have a good background in this subject, it's perfect for you.

Assumes you already know the basics of electromagnetism. Good for a quick refresher (it is a very small book) or a fresh look at electromagnetics concepts.

Good product and good service.

This book is worth buying for two good reasons 1) its an excellent treatment of extremely important concepts of electricity, magnetism and interaction of light with matter and 2) because its very affordable and very readable. Its good read for physicists, and its more than useful for material and / or polymer scientists, who use light as a tool to investigate properties of matter. Basic concepts are explained quite well here, and like many other Dover texts, it is terse, cheap and yet masterful.

Eric Ripert is the chef and co-owner of the New York restaurant Le Bernardin, which holds three stars from the Michelin Guide and has maintained a four-star rating from The New York Times for more than two decades. He is vice chairman of the board of City Harvest, a New York-based food rescue organization, as well as a recipient of the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest honor. He serves as a regular guest judge on Bravo’s Top Chef and is the host of his own TV series, Avec Eric, which has won Emmy and James Beard awards. The first half of this book is a young man struggling through a difficult childhood. Ripert's intelligence, honesty, and clarity make this section entertaining and relatable. Although his situation was much different from mine growing up, his description of the emotional impact often left me thinking, "I know exactly how that felt."The second section was even more fascinating. It tells the story of the a young man beginning a craft that he would one day master. It tells of the early mistakes, and of the struggles of the long, frustrating work day in the kitchen. Ripert's details, such as mentioning specific dishes, ingredients, or techniques, brings the stories to life. Combined with the various settings around France that Ripert and his co writer present vividly, this section makes for an engaging read.After finishing this book, I felt as if I had just finished having a long conversation with a legend, and that I had learned stories and lessons I would never forget.

This is a book that demands acceptance for what it is rather than docilely fitting into the "chef's biography" genre. How? by following two intertwined threads. The first thread is religious - tracing the influences which took him from an angry young man to a future Buddhist. The second thread is gourmand - tracing the influences that took him from the consummate consumer to a devotee of ingredients themselves. Each of the individuals involved in molding him is fleshed out in sufficient detail to understand why they had such an influence. The uncontrollable young man develops into a focused, in the moment, disciplined, efficient, elegant young chef ... as for the rest of his life, that is not the focus of this book.

A kitchen and some ingredients are transformed into a sumptuous read, inviting us to observe the making of a chef. We are offered not only training from kitchen help to sous chef to becoming master but allowed to witness slices of a child, a soul yearning for connection and finally the man who finds the giving and sharing of love in a dish. The spiritual quest continues as we only finish the hors d'oeuvres and consume the last page. We are left waiting for the next course with a wonderful bottle of French wine to hold us over.

I read this book through and enjoyed it thoroughly! It's 'easy' reading and very interesting! After I finished the book and heard the sad, sad news about Anthony Bourdain, I learned that the author of this book, Eric Ripart, was an extremely good friend of Anthony's. Somehow, I'm glad to know that the author, since I enjoyed the book so much, brought companionship to Mr. Bourdain, and they enjoyed some 'good eats' together …. Losing a friend to suicide is extremely traumatic; I know these comments have nothing to do with the book itself, but after reading it one almost regards Mr. Ripert as a 'friend' and I'm sorry about this loss for him, and also for Mr. Bourdain's family. It's a good book, and I enjoyed it very much!

I was unexpectedly and totally captivated by this book.It is an easy read, mostly because the sentences just flow across the pages, carrying the reader along from chapter to interesting chapter.The descriptions of the people and places are so fully and beautifully drawn that I felt as though I was watching movie unfold instead of reading a book.Ripert's upbringing is hardly what I would have imagined was the story behind of one of NYC's most highly-regarded chefs. It's a story that belies the easy smile that one sees so often in photographs of him and is a reminder that behind every window, there is a story.Beyond the compelling story of Ripert's early family life, I found the method of French schooling to be as interesting as anything else in the book.I highly recommend this wholly engaging story to people who are interested in reading about what it is like to grow up in the South of France, as well as people who are interested how the great chefs of our time became the great chefs of our time.

I've always thought there was something alluring and peaceful about Eric Ripert and his book was very well written and explores a past that while presented with many challenges, built a foundation for a lucrative life. I most certainly hope that he writes a second book about his experiences once he arrived in the US. Having been raised by a European mother and losing my father at a young age, this book truly struck a chord and exemplifies that one can be strong, while also having a soft and gracious heart. I loved every page of this book and it will make my upcoming meal at Le Bernadine that much more special.

The NY Times was disappointed that Eric Ripert only wrote this memoir up until his arrival in the United States at the tender age of 24, but I found it a perfect stopping point for this first memoir from the Michelin starred chef and frequent guest judge on Top Chef. So much happens in his life in the early years, including a troubled home life, a stint in the army and 3 years of struggle, learning and emotional strain working for Joel Robuchon. Well written and engaging, this is far more than a chef's tell-all; it is an engaging and heartfelt memoir that I devoured.

What a beautiful memoir! I adored the gritty brashness of Bourdain's 'Kitchen Confidential' and Ripert's own coming of age/ 'learning to love being a cook' story doesn't disappoint. Beautifully written in a way that will make you really feel Ripert's love for food - not just the mechanics of cooking, but when it comes down to it, his unabashed true love for good ingredients and the family love that make meals the most delicious.
