The content of this book was a somewhat of a disappointment, particularly from an author with a degree in English literature. Not only did the storyline diverge from the published synopsis but the representation of Elizabeth was, for most of the book, quite unlikable. She was mean spirited & judgemental – it called into question why Darcy was attracted to her. Fortunately, the other characters were much better natured & more appealing which made reading this book tolerable. The behaviours of some characters was inappropriate for members of the gentry in that era & this damaged the credibility of the story. The text was proficiently written & many scenes were charmingly described; however, the absence of a meaningful backstory prevented this book from being read as a stand-alone book for people unfamiliar with P&P. Also, a few editing errors interrupted the smooth flow of the narration. Overall, it was a decent effort at a historical romance.
A beautifully written novella. I enjoyed reading Darcy’s emotions which were conveyed wonderfully throughout. Jane was serene and Elizabeth feisty as I would imagine them to be. I loved that Elizabeth was writing her own novel and how Darcy helped promote her cause. Overall it was a very enjoyable read.
I gave this book 4 stars due to it not being fleshed out. The story was too short, but it held my attention and was witty. I really liked Jane in this short story. I do feel after reading this, that it leaves the reader wanting more, or should I say strung along. It feels manipulative .
The story was silly and too short. Elizabeth needed some research for her novel and the only place she could find what she needed was Darcy's library.... I didn't buy that premise.
A perfectly told story of the heat of anger in the middle of winter. Lizzy has had enough of Darcy. He thinks he's free of her at last. But books get in the way, or in this case help them on the path forward. Fully enjoyed. Looking forward to following this author!
Elizabeth Bennett Darcy is my favorite character in literature and she is well portrayed in this story. She is at her best and most intelligent. There is no Mr.Wickham, Mr. Collins, or Mrs. Bennett to muddy the waters.
A really excellent and romantic reimagining of Pride and Prejudice. I only wish there were more chapters! I will definitely be reading other books by this author.
The title refers to a Winter Ball … but the book is Elizabeth’s journey to become a published author.Following close on the Netherfield Ball, Mr. Bennet suffers a worrying illness. After his recovery, his oldest daughters, Jane and Elizabeth, spend the Christmas season with their London relatives.Elizabeth has begun a novel – writing not reading. She continues her efforts during her London stay. The sisters encounter Mr. Darcy inside the bookstore where Elizabeth searches for information for her book.A well-disposed research librarian is a writer's best friend, as essential as ink. ~ Barbara RoganQuote from the book: The previous matter of geography had been sorted at the bookshop the day before, but shortly after she’d begun work the next morning, she had run straight into yet another tangle that would require an additional research book to unravel—one she had been unable to find in Hatchards. So, we have a book about checking resources during the writing process. And yet, that book contains careless Regency errors. Several events show Jane and Elizabeth bowing rather than curtseying. In another example, Elizabeth gives a distance in kilometers which would not have been in use at that time. A few errors in time and logic: Darcy says the Netherfield Ball was a fortnight past. Elizabeth says they have been in London for a few weeks. That would mean the ladies left Meryton at least a week before the Netherfield Ball. Instead, after the Ball, Mr. Bennet must fall ill and recover; then the ladies travel to London and are there for three weeks. It would be nip and tuck for them to arrive before Christmas.Overall, the book is well-written and has few grammar errors, etc. I enjoyed this book even though Elizabeth is too easily angered and not always attractive. But in the tradition of JAFF variations, Darcy is able to fall in love with her anyway.Publication – is the auction of the Mind of Man. ~ Emily Dickinson
