About the Author
SCOTT KAISER is a nationally recognized master teacher of acting and voice, as well as a director, playwright, and author. For 28 seasons, Scott served as a member of the artistic staff at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, where he directed, adapted, coached, or performed in all 38 of Shakespeare's plays. Scott is the author of four books on Shakespeare: Have Shakespeare, Will Travel; The Tao of Shakespeare; Shakespeare's Wordcraft; and Mastering Shakespeare. Scott Kaiser is, in a word, brilliant, and he has here delivered a thoughtful and concise guide to tackling some of the greatest roles in the English language. Beginners and advanced actors alike will find much of value in Mastering Shakespeare, as will directors, and students looking to understand how Shakespeare can work on stage.
One of the great acting texts is Boleslavsky's ACTING - THE FIRST SIX LESSONS. This book is clearly influenced by its form and content, but approaches Shakespeare with some quite helpful insights. His approach is highly structured, but by using a narrative format he humanizes it. Well worth the time and money.
An amazing book for any Shakespeare actor. I used this book to prepare for my MFA auditions, and it got me into The Yale School of Drama! The book offers wonderful tools to use as you work on Shakespeare's text- a MUST have! I used it often during my time in drama school and I was so glad it was on my shelf.

I have had the very good fortune to have worked with Scott Kaiser as an actor at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and so when his book was published I was quick to pick up a copy. This book is a brilliantly informative, insightful and entertaining compilation of the type of work that Mr. Kaiser expertly has employed with professional actors and students over many years of directing, coaching, and teaching. It serves actors of all levels as an invaluable guide to working with Shakespeare's language -- it is destined to become a classic. Anyone interested in classical acting and performing Shakespeare should definitely buy a copy of this invaluable resource.
This book is full of great insight to the skills required to act Shakespeare! I had the honor of working with Scott Kaiser in person and he really does teach and use what he put in this book.
You'd need to be a really ardent student of Shakespeare in performance to fully appreciate this. Yes, alright I realise it is presumably aimed at those ardent students, but I was left wondering if they'd still be quite so ardent at the end of it all.Sadly it reminded me of the Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie sketch, 'Shakespeare Masterclass' but was nowhere near as entertaining.I don't think presenting the tutorials as a play really worked as a device and it became very boring and repetitive to read. Perhaps it might work better in actual performance, but you'd need actors already competant as Shakespearean performers to pull it off.I note some of the previous reviews have been written by former students of Scott Kaiser and are fulsome in their praise of this work, so it presumably worked for them.

I've never before encountered a book which manages so successfully to facilitate the leap between the fixed word on the page and a practical application of the techniques described. Outlining multiple approaches to the texts via image; speech measures; focal points, etc, Scott Kaiser brilliantly opens out as a gift to actors everywhere a clear path to tackling the specific challenges of acting Shakespeare which demystifies the process and instils confidence and passion in the performer. In addition the techniques here can be easily transposed to illuminate and tackle the challenges in all other dramatic writing. Actors everywhere should not be without this invaluable book.
