I'm not a fan of Charles River Media's books. They don't have color illustrations, aren't well proofread and just generally seem cheaply put together.Despite all that, Illustrating with Macromedia Flash Professional 8 is a must-have book for anyone using Flash. Firebaugh's use of Flash as an illustration tool is mind blowing, using simple vector tools to create photo-realistic images.The problems of being published by CRM are evident though. The black & white pictures make it hard to judge what's going on and there are a few confusing typos and mis-wordings. (he often says "delete" when he really means "cut") You end up stuck having to have the FLA files right in front of you while you read. It's a good way to learn, but rather inconvenient.I don't want to come off as down on this book just because I don't like the publisher. There's tons of great learning in this book. The source files are set up so you can poke through each step and see how things are put together. Also there are exercises at the end of each chapter to practice what you've learned.All in all, Illustrating with Macromedia Flash Professional 8 puts you on the path the to do things with Flash you never thought were possible.

The editor should be ashamed. There were paragraphs repeated word-for-word on the same page, and incorrect words as if auto-correct was running the show.Most disappointing was that the answer key was wrong at least 3 times. This is not acceptable when a student is supposed to rely on this as true and accurate information. I verified with my instructor when I started to second-guess myself, and she confirmed the first answer I questioned was incorrect. After that, I didn't waste her time. I just understood that this book was poorly edited and trusted my answers instead.

Please check the edition. Most courses requires the fifth edition that comes with a one time use code. If you guys are serious on HIT or HIM (medical coding) buy it new

I was not really familiar with the works of Shostakovich, but having been to Saint Petersburg several times and speaking with people about the siege of Leningrad, I thought the book would provide an interesting read. It more than delivered on this and I found it hard to put down. The photographs contained in this book are truly fantastic and not just a bunch of blurry indistinguishable ones. The story was both fascinating and moving, while at the same time giving me a new level of respect and appreciation for the residents of Leningrad, while showing how despicable the communist leaders truly were. It was also eye opening to learn about how this seventh symphony was played all over the world and universally understood. Even the Nazi soldiers (some of them) when they heard this symphony being played on loud speakers throughout the city understood that they would never be able to win this city, while also understanding that rather than the subhuman Slavs that they had been told lived there by Hitler that only the strongest and most human of humans could produce such music after such a prolonged siege and period of starvation. I had a SPB resident tell me this past summer about her father as a child and his evacuation from Leningrad during the siege. She spoke to me about the dangerous trip across the lake in the middle of winter. To then read about this "Road of Life" within the book in great detail, brought the earlier story I heard into much sharper detail. It was a good book that I hated to see end, although it is not a short one. After reading this book I bought the symphony to listen to and found the whole experience very enlightening after understanding the circumstances that surrounded its birth.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. This is an exquisitely written book, filled with such power and emotion that it moved me to tears on several occasions. The depth of the research and the honesty with which it is presented is impressive, and kudos to the author for this. I'm not really a huge non-fiction person, and I pretty much never read about war, but this one blew me out of the water. I don't give out five star ratings very often, but this one absolutely deserved it. The proof? Not only did I actually go out and buy the book, but I also bought a recording of the complete symphonies of Shostakovitch. I can't stop thinking about this book, even days later. Read it. You won't regret it.

Ostensibly this is a book for younger readers, perhaps for High School Advanced Placement English, Music or History students. This unassuming book however can hold its own in terms of pure scholarship. I am a subscriber to DSCH, and own every book I've been able to get my hands on on the life and music of Dmitri Shostakovitch, beginning with "Testimony", as told by Shostakovitch to Solomon Volkov and and New York Times journalist Harrison E. Salisbury's "The 900 Days:The Siege of Leningrad." A superb story teller, M.T. Anderson has created the most fully integrated book on Shostakovitch life & times thus far. There are those who consider Shostakovitch to be Gustav Mahler's heir apparent as master of the Symphonic form. We can only wish that someday a writer will come to the fore such as Henri-Louie de LaGrange did for the life & music of Mahler, & will write the definitive book(s) on Shostakovitch. For readers young AND old, Anderson's book will breath life into the story of this tormented soul who was the 20th Centuries most versatile composer.

M.T. Anderson is one of my favorite authors ever, young adult or otherwise, serious or silly. His "Feed" changed my entire perspective on our online world — and I was 42 at the time — and his "Jasper Dash and Flame-Pits of Delaware" is still one of the funniest books I've ever read. When I saw that he had written a book about one of my favorite composers ever, I one-clicked that puppy faster than you can blink. I was not disappointed.I knew the general story of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony, of his composing it during the Siege of Leningrad and what a splash it made across the world at the time, but Anderson presents an unbelievably detailed history of Shostakovich's early life in Leninist Soviet Union, Stalin's brutal reign, the war and the siege, and through it all, Shostakovich's composition of his huge 'war' symphony. It's a complete picture of an utterly foreign world to us, and Anderson brings it all round to the importance of art/music and how it keeps us human even in the worst of times. I was very sorry to see the book end.

I am a classical music lover and I thought this book was outstanding. The author provides the background of what is going on in Russia as it impacts on composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. I had no idea of the torments the Russian people went through as things in the country went from imperial rule to that of Lenin and then Stalin. In America, we hear much about the persecution of the Jews by Germany, but not about the thousands of Russians who were starved, sent to labor camps, tortured, shot, etc. The City of Leningrad was under siege for over a year while bombed and blockaded by the Germans. Shostakovich's 7th symphony (the Leningrad) was played all over the world and even by an orchestra of starving musicians within the city. It brought feelings of solidarity and hope to those who heard it.

Interesting plot and characters. Met the author in Kings Bay at a book signing. I do not want to spoil the ending, but I have questions.😉

Holy cow! Where to start? Suffice it to say that I do believe it helps if you are a bit familiar with military doctrine and international politics and diplomacy. This latest in a series of five books by Campbell builds on the earlier ones and, read as a standalone, might be a little challenging at spots because there isn't a lot of explanation. That said, the idea of a Russian coup, cyberwar against the US, and the need to sort things out quickly rang, unfortunately, true in the heated atmosphere of today. Good characters, if briefly sketched, in this plot driven thriller made it a surprisingly good read for me as it's not my usual genre (although I did read and very much Ice Station Nautilus) . Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Lots of action and some stuff to think about.

Review of TREASONBy Rick Campbell United States Naval Academy,’85This is the author’s fifth ‘page turner’, and it lives up to the appellation in excellent, thorough manner. Again it features Christine O’Conner as the National Security Advisor (NSA).She tells the President that she intends to resign as his NSA.He asks her to reconsider but she is adamant; he says he has another mission for her, to please wait and make her final decision until the completion of that mission. She agrees.The mission is another trip to Russia, involving another nuclear arms treaty and of course the Russians have not been idle, they have been working on a weapon that will make some of the U.S. arsenal useless.The Russians wait until O’Conner is in Russia, then stage a coup while she is with the Russian President. She and the Russian President spend a good deal of time getting away from, avoiding the ‘bad guys’ while the U.S. works its way out of its problems.Everything is resolved more or less satisfactorily and the author opens up a whole new avenue of adventure for Christine O’Conner.As stated earlier, this work is another ‘page turner’, very highly recommended, it is available on Amazon.The reviewer, Thomas W. Leo, CPP, is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

technothriller, suspense, political-intrigue, militaryThe initial setup was a bit mystifying, partly because of the preponderance of background characters, but always necessary. The continuing characters are clearly presented and compelling, each in their own way. The plot moves along swiftly and the suspense just keeps on adding up! No sense in doing a recap as the publisher's blurb is a good teaser, and other reviewers have done it to death.Bottom line is that this is an intense read probably aimed at a particular kind of geek but totally engrossing to any thrill junkie (hand in air here). Yes, it is hardly first in series and might bother some readers, but they'd probably complain about Cussler, too. Personally, I loved it and will read others by this author soon.I requested and received a free ARC from St Martin's Press.

If you enjoy edge-of-your-seat military thriller authors such as Larry Bond and Tom Clancy, then you need to take time to read Treason ( Trident Deception #5)by Rick Campbell. The plot revolves around a Russian government who was recently humiliated by the U. S. In an attempt get revenge, part of the leadership launches a coup and deploys a weapon which renders America's misses impotent. The only way for America to stop Russia from reclaiming part of the former Soviet Union is to rescue their deposed president and create a countermeasure to once again allow the use of missles. I give this book 4/5 stars.*A copy of the ebook is the only compensation received for this review. *

Very typical of the military/political thriller genre. you somewhat have to suspend your understanding of reality but the action is there to keep everyone interested. I would have liked to see more use of unique Russian names rather than the use of names from recent Russian history. Non Navy types will not notice but sending a large Ohio class submarine into the restricted manuevering area of the Black Sea just would not happen.

An outstanding story, fast-paced and non-stop action. The characters are well developed and believable. I truly couldn’t put this book aside until I was finished with it, even though I’m on vacation in Hawaii. Rick Campbell will become an author I follow!

Perhaps you live in a large city. If not, you have certainly wondered about life there. “Triumph Of the City” answers all your questions: why they succeed (educated/skilled people and diverse industries); why they fail (not enough entrepreneurs and one dominant industry); why they look so different (do people mostly walk? Drive? Take the bus?); what are sprawl's benefits (space and time) and costs (pollution.) You find out why in a city you are more likely to eat gourmet food, be pick-pocketed, or meet your ideal mate. You also make counter-intuitive discoveries: the movement against building in the coastal California actually makes the world browner, not greener. I greatly admire Edward Glaeser. He revived the field of urban economics, almost single-handedly. He has investigated every aspect of city life. He masters theory, statistics, and history. He is not ideological. All his qualities transpire here. Yet The book reads easily. The economics and statistics are clearly explained. Examples abound: New York, Detroit, Houston, Milan, Mumbai, Rio, and then some. As a non-ideologue, Glaeser heaps both scorn and praise on both markets and governments. Want to make house affordable? Let developers build up and out (in passim he criticizes the “eyes on the street” theory.) Do not look down on suburbia: many embraces it because life is cheaper and better than in the center. But you need governments to take care of public health, congestion and global warning. Glaeser endorses water utilities, congestion taxes and some infrastructure. He lambasts the mortgage-interest deduction, most building restrictions (including for Conservancy and Preservation) and most efforts at urban renewal, like conference centers.) On the eternal struggle over the merits of centralized versus decentralized government he takes a middle ground: different levels are needed to look over each others' shoulders. I appreciated such nuanced views This is the best pop-econ book I have read. Highly recommended

This book is a hymn to the civic value and importance of city life...For it is Glaeser's contention that it is city life, where smart people gather to live and work, that is the mother of invention, productivity and entrepreneurship and that these three factors, above all, are the sine qua non of great cities and great civic life.Yes, successful cities need other basic things like clean water, good schools, alert and aggressive policing, an abundance of good housing options, safe and attractive public places, and a pro business, pro development public sector, but it is the gathering together in close proximity of large numbers of bright, entrepreneurial people that is the ultimate life-source of great urban living....Ultimately, for Glaeser, it is great wealth that makes for great cities. New York, Boston and Houston are - each for partially different reasons - the exemplar cities of his thesis. LA,though he doesn't say it, would seem to be the anti-city of his thesis.This is a wonderful book..full of engaging and interesting facts...that builds to a compelling thesis about the value and importance of great cities, and of the bedrock foundational conditions underlying their greatness..

Glaeser writes extremely well for an economist. The book offers plenty of data and statistics, yet they are offered in a easy to comprehend way and without ruining the pleasant rhythm of the book.The book might be seem a bit outdated, yet it still rings true on most topics. Would love to hear more from Glaeser on the current state of San Francisco and Seattle.Last, the author makes some compelling arguments for high rise buildings, but I am still not giving up on old buildings.

This book offers some interesting narrative on the history of cities, but Glaeser's arguments about the importance of cities in the modern world fall a little flat. His historical perspective is compelling, largely due to the fact that he is able to give real life examples of cities throughout history to bolster his narrative. The main gist of his argument is that cities bring people together, and it is only because of this that civilization can advance. While this might have been true historically, I do not necessarily believe that this will remain true of civilization in the future.For example, he argues that telecommunication and technology cannot replace face-to-face interaction, but this is not necessarily true. More and more people work from home, and some studies have demonstrated that these people are actually more productive than those who are in a face-to-face office environment. I think that this type of interaction will become more pronounced as technology advances, eventually eliminating the need for a centralized office environment altogether.Glaeser is more successful with his economic arguments, which makes sense, since he is an economist. However, he relies too heavily on correlation to prove his points, and we all know that correlation does not necessarily equate to causation. When he delves into environmentalism, his arguments just seem tacked on and unsupported in order to add a PC chapter on climate change. How stuffing more and more people into an urban setting without addressing the underlying problem of population growth makes little sense. His arguments are solely based upon carbon emissions as the issue.Overall, this is not a bad book, but it is not a great book either. The historical bits are more interesting than the persuasive bits. It is a bit longer than necessary and jumps around without clear structure. I also have a major issue with him not directly citing his sources throughout the book via footnotes or endnotes. Instead, he has a section of sources at the end that aren't linked to anything in particular, so actually fact-checking some of his statistics or suppositions is a fairly difficult endeavor, as if he were intentionally trying to obfuscate his sources.
