I had no experience in JavaScript, all my coding was done in C#.NET, Delphi, Java and before reading this book first I started with JavaScript, the Good Parts book and failed...then moved to Secrets of JavaScript Ninja book and again failed, they were not for beginners...Then I came to this one and awesome book. It is from beginner to Professional all in one. Don't worry about the size of the book if you are a developer you can read it much faster because you don't really need all of it if it is teaching you what is a variable and fast forward to the parts you don't know...If you are new to JavaScript first read this book before reading the other two books I mentioned above.

Overall useful for experienced developers of any language. That is to say, if you are a beginner programmer, I would find another book (and language quite frankly). As far as the good, this book seems to cover everything that deals with JavaScript and the browser without bringing in frameworks and libraries. The reason I rate this 4 instead of 5 is because it's organized a bit strange. For example, the author spends a lot of time talking about what variables are, the different types of variables (primitive values and references), and how they are copied. The thing is that there aren't any surprises here, and he could have explained this in about half the space. Additionally, he talks a lot about how scope, variables, and execution context pertain to objects prior to ever explaining what objects are. He then calls out with and try/catch. Then he only explains with, but the example cannot be executed yet because with is a way to assign execution context to a single object. He doesn't explain try/catch for JavaScript at all. Moreover, if you read JavaScript: The Good Parts by Crockford, he explains why with is actually quite ambiguous and will silently create undefined global variables if you attempt to access undefined properties. No mention of this in Professional JavaScriptThis is all just to get to this point: There is a lot of good information here. However, the information isn't well organized, and I am not sure who the audience is. Some of the information is also incomplete. If you're an experienced programmer learning JavaScript this is a fine starting point. There are other starting points to consider too. For my tastes, I would prefer something that is better organized and went more indepth into the language features and spent less time explaining standard concepts in OO languages. Or do so and market the book as a beginner's book.

There is a line from Lion King where little Simba comments on his Uncle Scar's weirdness. Scar replies "You have no idea." The main point of this review is that Javascript is a really weird contraption, and that this book points this out in a way that is very helpful for programmers coming from more traditional compiled programming languages. I have programmed in C, C++, Java, C# for many years. I have read other books on Javascript which tried to teach by examples. With normal programming languages, this works fine. However, within a few hours with this book I realized that to understand Javascript, you must give up on some basic expectations you may have as a code developer. This was a surprise to me, but crucial to be able to learn Javascript well enough to work on non-trivial projects with existing code. Javascript is simply bizarre. There are many different ways to implement object-oriented patterns which all use different-looking code, and have subtle differences, making it so easy to get bitten by unintended consequences. From this book I learned that there is no one solid way to implement the basic pattern of your code, you must make a choice. If you try to read a Javascript book which teaches by examples, you will be in trouble when you actually start to modify someone else's Javascript code which used a different pattern. This book doesn't just show trivial examples, it methodically goes through how it works in enough detail so you can understand how it is working under the hood. Also, the text has plenty of warnings about buggy implementations and common pitfalls. After you get about 1/4 of the way through it you will be wondering how any Javascript code runs on Internet Explorer at all, since about every other page is another 'this-is-broken-in-IE' warning boxes. The text is written in a very clear style, never glossing over anything. It isn't at all cute or made to be entertaining, just kind of down to business. There is no question I will be using this book nearly every time I have to work on Javascript code. If you are just looking to make a little mouse button handler in a web page, this is probably not the book for you. It does not jump right into little useful examples. If you are coming from a programming background in traditional compiled languages, and you want to know more about Javascript than little tiny scripts, IMHO this book is absolutely necessary. You will never regret purchasing it.

I've almost finished this book (up to Chapter 23 out of 25). I taught myself web development over the past few years and so would describe my skills as intermediate, and was lacking understanding in some areas.This book contains a lot of good explanations of how JavaScript works and how to use it to its full potential. There are plenty of useful code snippets that the author presents and then explains. He also includes cross-browser solutions to various issues which is very helpful.The author introduces various new JavaScript APIs associated with HTML5 which are gaining fairly good browser support as of early 2014.Although this third edition was written a few years ago, it is still highly relevant. Just a tip for others buying the third edition - you might want to skip over Chapter 19: Ecmascript for XML. It describes E4X; a technology which has since been deprecated.

The author's apparent intention is to provide readers with a fictional, fleshed-out version of the John Brown which we encountered in high school history classes. Unfortunately, the picture created by Mr. McBride is of a superhero-ish stick figure rather than a believable human being. Mr. Brown is portrayed as a callous killer who believes he is doing the Lord's work; his bullets never miss, and the bullets of his numerous enemies can't hit him; he needs little or no food or sleep, is repeatedly described as debilitated, but is almost supernaturally strong and quick. As he wanders the pre-Civil War landscape he encounters a number of historical figures (including Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas) who also are presented by Mr. McBride as one-dimensional (Tubman as mythic, Douglas as buffoon), Even the bit players tend to be cartoons, vested with extreme characteristics - exceptionally large and dumb; exceptionally small and wise. I didn't care for the book, and it's only saving grace is that it increased my interest in the time and place of the events portrayed.

Normally I wouldn't pick up a history book about John Brown and Harpers' Ferry. However, since this was written by James McBride whose book The Color of Water I had enjoyed years ago it was worth a try. It's hard for me to separate the fact from the fiction in the telling of this story by a boy, named Onion. It's written in the dialect and language of the time period which could be offensive but is richly creative and colorful. It also has some profound truths. A few examples I marked while reading:"Some things in this world just ain't meant to be, not in the times we want'em to, and the heart has to hold it in this world as a remembrance, a promise for the world that's to come." p332"Nobody sees the real you. Nobody knows who you are inside. You just judged on what you are on the outside whatever your color." p313"I knowed I weren't the only person in the world who knowed the Old Man's cheese had slid off his biscuit. p263"They didn't no more notice me of being a boy under that dress and bonnet than they would notice a speck of dust in a room full of cash."p234"That fool was ugly enough to make you think the Lord put him together with His eyes closed,"p156

While, this author has made the Best Seller's list, he has not made my best list. This is a good author and while it is interesting that the story of John Brown is told from this perspective is certainly different but it has its flaws. A would describe this as a history lesson peppered with the author's flair for excitement. The book sounds a lot like a story about cowboys and Indians and if you like that type of genre, I suppose it works for you but for me it was too long and unforgettable. I wanted just the meat without all the gravy. I think it was a little far fetched when they have "onion" getting drunk with Frederick Douglas to spur away the sexual advances is a bit much. After all, I am sure that Mr. Douglas might have had his one sexual exploits that I am not interested in. This book is too long . I was very upset with the way that "onion" was treated and I felt sorry for "Onion that he grew up with no parenting. .

I enjoyed this fictional take on John Brown and his raiders, but walked away feeling the story needed one more content edit to make it soar. For example, I did find the story humorous at times, but thought how much funnier it would have been if we were reminded throughout the book of the old man who was telling the tale. The repetition of phrases that bothered other readers would have made more sense if presented in the context of the well-worn voice of an elderly speaker. I was also bothered by the description of the feathers--an ivory-billed woodpecker has black and white feathers large enough not to lose in a pocket out on the Great Plains, but the red feathers are tiny body feathers located on the nape of the neck. I have a degree in wildlife ecology, so this bothered me way out of proportion to its importance in the story, but did make me wonder why that detail was missed. Just one example, but one final fact-check to pick up little things like that and one final story edit to enrich the telling of the tale would have really made this novel shine.

I thoroughly enjoyed this very well researched, exceptional book on the history of Christian contemplation/meditation and it's relevancy for individuals seeking a deeper interior relationship with God. There is much to learn from reading this book with pages and pages of excellent resources for continued study. Daniel Coleman finds just the right intersection between the Quaker faith, Buddhism and Christian mysticism. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in the Centering Prayer community.

Very informative and engaging work. Coleman provides great introductions to Christian meditation and contemplative practices, as well as Buddhism & process theology. I think this is an ideal primer/jumping off point to go deeper into any of these disciplines, and to have a solid framework from which a more robust praxis can be built.

There is something happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear; but this book beautifully pulls together three huge trends in spiritual thought that are converging in the context of an emerging 'spiritually independent' contingent who recognize the deep central importance to human existence of the 'absolute truth' of meaning and value, as distinct from the 'relative truth' of fact that science and logic brings into human awareness. Read in conjunction with books like Ken Wilber's 'The Religion of Tomorrow,' Rami Shapiro's 'Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent', and even Aubrey Glazer's 'Tangle of Matter and Ghost' (a spiritual exploration of the 'post-secular' songbook of Leonard Cohen), among others, one can find a path to what Ken Wilber calls an emerging 'integral vision', a 'Fourth Turning' in the Buddhist tradition, that indeed takes the consciousness and culture of the human species beyond the divisive particularity of ethnocentrism, and toward a transformative integral faith that is 'posthuman' and truly inclusive and universal. It is the only way that can possibly save us as a species from continuing to pursue our current modern path that appears to be careening toward complete annihilation of the natural world as we know it, the world that gave rise to us and upon which we are an integral and completely dependent element.

I identified and felt the poetry. Once I started it I couldn't wait to get to the next poem. The words and organization are unique but fitting. Excellent piece of work. Loved it and will re-read and re-read.

This book gives us a window to the emotions of a young man living with HIV and struggling to find their soul mate. The poems were lyrical. They left me with a wide range of feelings and kept me interested in the "story" that was being told. My heart goes out to the author. I bought this as a kind of present for my mother, to help her deal with the fact that her best friend has terminal cancer. She has been reading it and told me it has very helpful things inside. Since she started reading it I feel like she has been able to talk about things without breaking down crying so much. Cancer is tough. I think this book can help people help loved ones to live with it, not just accept it. I bought it for her because I had no idea what to say to her to help her deal.

This book was very helpful. It gave me some insight into how my boyfriend was feeling. Helped me to understand that alot of what i was doing even with the best intentions was actually hurtful and sometimes frustrating for him. Most of what i was saying to make him feel better was actually not meant to make him feel better at all, but was really all about making me feel better. Without this book i would have continued to be frustrated and hurt that all i was saying and doing wasnt helping the way i intended. This book definitely gave me some needed strength, being a caregiver is a hard road.thank you

Absolutely one of THE most practical and informative books on this topic I've ever read! I have been a bereavement specialist for 25 years, coupled with the fact that I just lost a sibling to cancer, so I know of what I speak. This book not only spoke to me, but to the large group to which I presented a talk on cancer. I highly recommend this to everyone, because all of us know someone who has had or will have cancer, unfortunately!

My daughter was diagnosed with Cancer. She is very young. I was so shocked I didn't know what to say to her. I knew that "You will be fine, you will get better." was not the correct thing to say. But what should I do, what should I say? This book answered all my questions, mentioned many comments that Cancer patients do NOT want to hear. I recommend this book highly to anyone who knows someone diagnosed with Cancer.

This is a great book both for people with cancer, but especially for caregivers. I have passed this book on to many others as I have been a cancer caregiver for the past two years. Nice easy read for the ordinary person wanting to learn about relating to people with cancer. I used it as part of an inservice for lay ministers who visit nursing homes and hospitals. A very practical book to help family and friends know how to better relate to family and friends as they experience any chronic illness.

the first edition of this book was terrific. the new version, which adds information from a recent survey that lori hope conducted, is even better. i work with cancer patients and this is my go-to book. i order a half dozen copies at a time and hand them out to everyone. it does a better job of identifying and working through emotional issues related to cancer than any other book in the field. one thing i particularly like about the book is the way it is organized. the "20 things" that people should know about the cancer patient are in separate chapters. so, if you are the patient and you want to read through the book, you can pick it up and read about one topic at a time (which is as much as one can read while going through treatment). also, while the book is directed toward friends/family/caregivers -- as in the cancer patient saying to others "these are the 20 things i want you to know" -- it is just as useful a tool for the patient as is is for the circle of loved ones. if you are a cancer patient and something is really rubbing the wrong way -- and it will -- you can flip through this book, find the topic, and lori will help you articulate the words behind that feeling that you're having. it kind of helps the cancer patient to develop his/her voice. lori also writes a blog which is widely followed, and is a highly-regarded and much loved figure in the cancer community. wonderful book from an extraordinary woman.

Our three boys (7, 5, 2) ask to do our devotional all throughout the day. Barbara Reaoch's "A Jesus Christmas" is far and away the best devotional we've done as a family, Christmas or otherwise. Each devotional begins with a scripture reading followed by 2 questions to make sure everyone got the main points from the text. Next, Reoach shows how Satan's lies are refuted and dismantled in Christ's Incarnation. She masterfully covers deep theological truths in simple and short ways that kids can understand. Lastly, there is a family journaling page with creative prompts to repond to the devotion with art. This will be a book to look back on for years to come and enjoy the memories of studying God's Word together. Our family has had some major lightbulb moments throughout this devotion like the story of a mother bird protecting her chicks from a fire. Our son said, "I get it!! Jesus took the punishment we deserved. He died so we don't have to!" "A Jesus Christmas" is the perfect way to prepare for Christmas. We couldn't recommend it more highly!

We love how this devotion is easy to go through as a family but is also so rich with the gospel message. We see over and over again how God sent Jesus to mankind to destroy every lie the serpent had been telling us since the beginning. Even our youngest children are getting to learn and understand big concepts through words that they understand. Our more mature children are able to contemplate and wrestle with some powerful truths.

We really love this devotional. We have a large family with kids from 5-19. We can apply the daily lessons do all can understand and discuss. Simple, Biblical. It can take just 5-10 minutes, or if discussion carries on (as it often does for us) you can spend 20-30 minutes talking about the lesson. As a Dad and spiritual leader in our home I am so thankful that my wife picked this up for us. 10/5 stars.

I loved reading this Advent book with my child. We both looked forward to it each night. Just wish I had a hard copy instead of a Kindle version, but the PDF print out is a nice touch.

Our family loves this book! It has given us a way to focus on the Christmas story from start to finish, and I love how the author connects the Old Testament to Christmas in a way the children can easily understand. We have incorporated the daily devotional into our Advent calendar routine, so instead of just looking forward to the sweet treat, we have a special time focusing on Jesus first.

We have 3 kids, 7 years old or younger. Getting a resource that can speak to each age, engaging their hearts and minds is no easy objective. YET these guys have done just that. We will be using this book for years to come with joy and learning, all rolled into one. Highly recommend!

Lois Gibbs, known as the Mother of Superfund, is the Executive Director of the Center For Health, Environment and Justice. She is the recipient of over 20 prestigious awards including the Goldman Environmental Prize for North America (1990), and an Honorary Doctorate at the State University of new York at Cortland. I was disappointed when I compared this book to the 1978 book, "Love Canal", My Story" by Lois Marie Gibbs because I found that the books were identical except that this one has a forward by Ralph Nadar and an epilogue.If you are researching Love Canal, then this book contains a factual journal of events chronologically as they happened. The writing is so poor it is almost distracting (and the original book actually names a co-author). But the story of what one dedicated person can do to bring about change in their life, their community's life, the local government, the national government and even the law is as important today as it was in 1978.

I was compelled to finish this book and it was amazing (in a bad way) to see what the Love Canal residents went through, but it was a hard book for me to read because the writing was redundant and sometimes disorganized.

As a native Western New Yorker who lived in suburban Buffalo during the Love Canal era, I found Gibbs' account both accurate and inspiring. (I'm also a Ph.D. historian and am a stickler for evidence.) This book demonstrates that even one person can make a difference -- a lesson we need to hear today more than ever. The evidence of Love Canal's danger to residents is overwhelming. The book to which another reviewer refers as counterevidence (The Skeptical Environmentalist) has been widely panned in the scientific and scholarly reviews such as the journal Science as a highly flawed book which used secondary sources out of context. I invite you to visit Love Canal the next time you are in Niagara Falls, and you will see (and smell) for yourself the physical evidence of the chemicals which bloop and seep in the areas covered by a massive clay cap right across from the elementary school -- like some terrible modern-day burial mound.Currently the NY State Dept. of Health is conducting both a massive cancer cluster study and an autoimmune disease study in Western New York in the area codes downwind from Niagara Falls plant sites. The cancer clusters, which in some cases have shown an incidence well above average (60%+), may be linked to a combination of low-level ionizing radiation from a WWII Manhattan Project plant near Niagara Falls, along with decades of pollution. (The studies are ongoing.) A new toxic brownfield where residents are living has been discovered in Buffalo in the last year. In the last six months, retired employees seriously ill with heavy metal contamination have admitted to the illegal dumping of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals into the water source during the 1970s.The fact is that hardworking families scrimped and saved to buy houses in an area that both the developer and the city knew was heavily contaminated by chemical pollutants. Lois Gibbs, a concerned mother and housewife with little education, realized that something was terribly wrong. Illness rates had skyrocketed, especially for childhood cancers. Foul-smelling chemicals pooled in the school playground and residential backyards; children's sneakers which came in contact partly dissolved as a result. Gibbs shared her concerns with her neighbors, and became a self-taught grassroots organizer in the process. She and her neighbors carried out the simple data collecting which the DoH refused to do. Armed with files of evidence, Gibbs lobbied local officials, the city, the state, and even the company for help for her neighborhood -- and she didn't give up until -- finally -- President Carter did the right thing and relocated those families to safety.If you still think an individual can't make a difference in today's world, you need to read this book. It is truly inspiring.
