I've always loved these Brain Quest question cards, and so does my daughter. We owned the 3-4 year old cards and my daughter loved them so much I figured I'd get these for her 4th birthday. There is a set inbetween the 3-4 and these, but I wanted her to be challenged for a little while, so we decided to go with the kindergarten set. Yes, some of the questions are a bit advanced for her, but for the most part she can do them, and she has a blast while answering them. We usually have a couple books before bed, but lately she's been wanting to do a few sets of questions instead of reading actual books, that's how much she loves them. They are a great tool to get your little one thinking.

My son turned 3 two months ago. These are a pretty good fit for him and he's enjoying them, although many of the questions strike me as "too easy" and I would think they'd be in the age 2-3 deck (such as counting & color indentification). It really depends on your child, though. Some reviews say "too hard" and some say "too easy", so it just depends. And there's nothing wrong with a little recap of things he already knows. It was a pretty good mix of challenging & easy, although only a few did I think were truly challening for his age.He loves looking through these and completed the entire first deck front & back the day we got it. It also opens up discussion and I can revise the question if I want to, or expand on it.Some of the questions are so-so ... such as identifying who is wearing "overalls". Just not a common clothing item in my opinion, but maybe it is in some regions? :) Also, I skip over the nursery rhyme questions. There are a handful of questions that give you the "wrong" lyrics to the nursery rhyme, and the child is supposed to know which part is wrong, and what the right lyrics are. Just kind of a confusing concept for this age (unless you are big into memorizing nursery rhymes). Learning or correcting words to nursery rhymes just isn't that important for us. We sing a few for fun, but I just feel like something else besides that could have been used that was more educational or practical.I liked the questions that had to do with "under" "over" "behind" etc. Those are concepts that I have not really taught him yet so it was good to see.

We love Brain Quest activity books and I grew up loving these Brain Quest card decks, but Kindergarten? Really? We got this for my 3.5 year old thinking that it would be a little challenging, but good, and he blew threw every single question with ease. He is a smart little boy, but by no means setting new childhood standards. I would say that this is a wonderful product, but suitable for the 2-3 year old age range (only some of the questions about money/telling time could be tough). Certainly a good review or confidence builder for children entering Kindergarten, too (maybe good for an early reader who can do the questions on his/her own). Will continue to purchase Brain Quest items, but will look for products several years ahead!

My son LOVES these. It's a game to him and he loves going through them and feeling that sense of accomplishment as he gets the answers right. It helps us also review some areas he is not as familiar with such as coin values, telling time, and recognizing some numbers and letters.He is 3.5 years old and has already gone through the deck that precedes this one, so I got him the 4-5 and the 5-6 year decks as well to see where he is on those levels and start exposing him to more things he is not as comfortable with.He still loves them and is doing great. I love that the presentation makes it like a game to him so it's lot laborious. He actually asks me and his dad to play the game with him. =)

I bought the pre-school (4-5) set and love the variety of questions. I think they are very are appropriate if a child has not already been in preschool for a year. For my daughter (who is turning 4 at the end of july) they are fairly easy. That being said, she has fun and it's a great tool, that keeps her thinking and boosts her confidence. I also have purchased the brainquest workbooks and find she struggles more with connecting the dots so it may be a difference in learning style where she visually learns with ease but is less tactile at this point. We take these on car rides instead of electronics.

Got this for my 3.5 year old daughter who is currently in preschool. She didn't want to stop the first night I brought it out--she was having that much fun. She even asks to do the 'game with the cards.' There were some questions she had more trouble with than others (patterns, sequences), but I'd say she aced about 85% of the questions. I immediately ordered the age 5-6 version and plan to get her started on that soon.This comes with two fan decks in the set (different questions). Very easy to put in my purse. We brought it to a relative's home and to restaurants.

I have heard and read a lot about these Brain Quest cards recently and it dawned on me that I had either the same types of cards or something similar when I was a kid and I really liked them. I have always enjoyed trivia and I'm hoping to pass that on to my five-year-old. I wanted to start with the preschool since he has not started school yet but he actually knows a lot more than I thought he would and once we are done with these I plan to get the kindergarten ones. These are really good for helping you figure out what your kid might need a little extra help with and also to surprise you with how much your kid already knows. I also feel like this is getting my son more interested in learning and going to school than before.

Love love brain quest. My 2 year old asks to "read my cards" all the time. We are now on the 4-5 year old cards. We started with the my first brain quest. We have also bought the corresponding work books. She loves to "do schoolwork" and use the stickers at the end of the books. These cards are easy to stash in the car or purse and take with you everywhere. Great to use in long lines and long drives

This is a great introduction to healing clays, though in my research I've encountered conflicting opinions. For example, Perry A~ draws a sharp distinction between calcium and sodium bentonite. She could be right, but other sources I've contacted either draw no distinction, or prefer sodium bentonite over calcium. Some say calcium is often added to bentonites and then marketed as calcium bentonite; and that all bentonites contain both sodium and calcium as natural elements. Either way, I buy my clay from bestbentonite.com and have been back and forth with their staff with all of my questions. According to their representative: "The difference is that calcium is used to dilute Bentonite so it can be used in other products like soap, cosmetics, and many other comodities. Calcium Bentonite is what you have after that mixing process. I guess that mixing could happen in nature for example, if a river were to flow through a bentonite deposit and carry the bentonite downstream were it got mixed with calcium and who know what other minerals and then deposited in a bed to be discovered later." Also, "most commercial Bentonite is mixed with calcium at the mill to make it easier to mix for commercial processing purposes. When calcium is added, it can only diminish the ability of the clay." If you're wondering, their clay it NOT processed with cationic electrolytes, such as aluminum cations (which would diminish the negative ionic charge that makes the clay so effective). By the way, this stuff has cured severe diverticulitis in two elderly friends of mine, and is incredible for sores, infections and burns of any kind. Oh wait, but only an FDA approved DRUG can treat or cure any disease! Nevermind, I must be a delusional moron.P.S.: There are some pretty good interviews with Perry A~ on YouTube where she basically lays out all the info that's in her books. Well worth a look if you've got a spare hour.

I grew up in a few single wide trailers and had the vocabulary that you would expect. After my military career and over 10 years in the corporate world, my vocabulary increased just by association with my peer groups (even before I ever purchased Verbal Advantage).I still have many friends who I care about deeply that never left that small town I grew up in. When I communicate with them today I can't help but to think they are not as intelligent as I am. I don't want to feel that way, but it's true. If I owned a company, the chances are I would not hire them.Verbal Advantage made me realize that successful Executives probably view my current communication ability in the same regard as I view my childhood friends from the trailer parks. As much as that Executive may like me and believe I have a high aptitude, I doubt he would give me a Vice President job. There is a communication gap between executives and myself in the same way there is between myself and my old buddies.Is this fair? Probably not... But not much in life is fair. In reality however, we all play by the same rules. One of those rules is that people in a position to hire you need to be able to see you in that role before they will put you into that role. Vocabulary is one facet that will help. Two other details that you should investigate are 1) Your appearance, including your attire and physical looks and 2) The way you carry yourself.I despised vocabulary and grammar in school. For some reason Verbal Advantage is really enjoyable for me. Maybe it's because now I can see the correlation between success and vocabulary? Not sure, either way I thoroughly enjoy Verbal Advantage. I suggest getting both the audio program and this book.I've went through this entire program more than once. It's not a fast process. I never realized how many words I just glossed over while reading or talking with others. I've reread books from a few years ago and noticed the author used many words that I had never seen until I went through VA. How did I not notice that I didn't know these words the first time I read the books? You'll be amazed at how many words you gloss over without even slowing down.Even at times when the learning curve feels slow, all of a sudden during a conversation you'll whip out a brand new word you learned weeks ago and didn't even realize you were ready to use it. It's a great feeling when you use the precise word to communicate effectively.There are no downsides to improving yourself. Success is not something you pursue; Success is something you become...

I love this book ( though I doubt the author's assertions of being at the 95 percentile of all English native -speakers once reading the whole book. . Nor do I like the way in which the author's intended purpose is to present a pre-test much more difficult than the ensuing post-test ). The etymology accompanying each word and word , and the lengthy disquisition about the Latin root from which each word is derived from , make a fascinating and enlightening read. Yet I think this book would be more helpful if for each word there would be an illustrative sentence showing the word used in contex ( though it is sometimes done ) . I recommend this fook for the wordsmith ! A wonderful job !

A brief and extremely readable summary of various aspects do the history and culture of the Mexica. It does have to achieve a broad overview of the cultural and religious history of the Mexica, but it is so broad that the reader may have a hard time contacting. That said, the further reading section is excellent to build on knowledge gained and the liberal use of primary sources in translation largely compensate for the breadth of the material covered.

My review is not about the content of the book but about the production of the audiobook. If ever there were a time not to use a computerized reader, a book about the Aztecs in English is it. The pronunciation of the names of gods, people, and cities in this reading is not only incorrect, it is also distracting and hard to listen to. I think this is worth mentioning because it was a missed opportunity to help newcomers with pronunciation and because, since the book is so short, it's hard to understand the value of paying for the audiobook in this case.

The Aztecs: A Very Short Introduction by David Carrasco in a brief one hundred thirty five page book that goes into depth about the Aztec culture. The book is an in depth view into the culture from the start of the Aztec rule to the very last day of their rein. Throughout High School I have never been a super big reader, but I actually really enjoyed this book. The book does have some longer words and does take some prior knowledge about history, but it is a pretty easy read. This is not the most action packed or most exciting book, but if you have a thirst for knowledge this is a book for you. This book is only one of dozens of many book doing the same with other ancient empires with stories and comparing cultures. This is one book I would recommend to anyone I know. I will be sure to find more books by David Carrasco and look forward to the new information I will learn. I would recommend anyone to check this author out.

This book has a lot of good information, but it's not where I'd recommend starting. Carrasco spends too much time on the history of European-Western perceptions of the Mexica, even discussing Erich von Danekin's crackpot alien theories at one point. Since most of these European-Western perceptions are totally ignorant, as Carrasco agrees, they waste valuable space in this short book. Maybe I'm not the target audience for this book, but if you're reading this review, you probably aren't either.Carrasco sometimes engages in long passages of weasel words like this:"That the Aztecs practiced ritual human sacrifice is beyond doubt, but it is also clear that Spanish chroniclers exaggerated the numbers and purposes of these sacrifices as a strategy to justify their own conquests and prodigious violence against Mesoamerican men, women, and children. Scholarship also reveals that many ancient cultures including the Romans, Greeks, Japanese, Chinese, Africans, Andeans, and Egyptians practiced human sacrifice, often in very large numbers. Even though the Aztec image in Western thought ranks them as the biggest sacrificers in the world, there is no substantial archaeological or documentary proof that they ritually killed more people than other civilizations."Carrasco then spends twenty pages talking about Mexica human sacrifice, far more than you'd find on most introductory books on the Romans, Greeks, etc. You can't have it both ways. (Likewise, he announces "Mexica" as more accurate than "Aztec" at the beginning of the book but goes on to use "Aztec" anyway.)To be fair, there is "no substantial proof" for *many* things about the Mexica, but scholarly hypotheses have tended toward seeing Mexica culture as more oriented around human sacrifice than, for example, the Inca. Why couldn't he say that? He correctly says that the physically impossible account of sacrificing 80,000 warriors in 4 days is almost certainly false, but he attributes it to Spanish propaganda "to justify their conquests," neglecting to mention that the figure comes from Diego Duran, one of the Spaniards *most* sympathetic to the Mexica (he learned Nahuatl), preferring to convert them rather than kill them. It's imperialism either way, but Carrasco tramps on the details.Instead, I'd recommend The Aztecs, Inga Clendinnen's speculative but gripping Aztecs: An Interpretation, the older The Aztecs, a History, and the even older Daily Life of the Aztecs (Native American)

A Raisin in the Sun is a classic play about one family's hopes and dreams in 1950's America. Every character in this play has a different dream. The main character of Mama is an African American domestic worker whose husband has died and left her a insurance policy. At the play's beginning, Mama is waiting on the insurance check to arrive. She and her family live in a crowded apartment on the South Side of Chicago. Her family is composed of her son Walter Jr, his wife and their young son. Also her other daughter, a student who is interested in her African roots also lives in that same apartment. Larraine Hansberry has a gift for dialogue and creating interesting scenes. Mama's dream is to buy a home in the segregated community of Clybourne Park. Walter Jr's dream is to be part owner of a liquor store. Whose dream will be fulfilled ?Highly recommended

First off why am I now just reading this glorious play? I must admit within the first couple of pages I was completely sucked in. Lorraine takes a simple family and shows how sexism, racism, and classism, can shape a family for generations. In only 100 + pages I am able to connect to the characters and understand who they are. Walter Lee Jr, is a dreamer, yet very stubborn and emotional. Beneatha mirrors her brother somewhat and is an intellectual who seeks out her place in the world and is not willing to settle. Lena (Mama) the family matriarch is strong willed and tried to maintain her morals and commands respect Ruth is the realist and very pessimistic about life but continues to preserve.These characters are very relatable. One part that stood out for me was when Ruth kept telling Walter "eat your eggs" because she didn't want to hear him still selling her a dream. He responded by saying you always crushing my dreams and that black women are the only women who don't hold their men down. I was completely flabbergasted. This stereotype of black women having to be a ride or die and help build you up manifested right there. Another point of contention for me was when Mama wanted to move the family and the white neighbors said they wouldn't be welcomed there. What bothered me the most was how Mr. Linder stated the white people in that community where hardworking and just trying to have a better life. Is that not what the Younger family was trying to do? Even though we don't have Jim Crow laws today, A Raisin in the Sun hold true to it's themes today. This can be read by everyone but I know it will hit home for AA.

This version contains some dialogue that did not appear in the famous film version, which makes the book especially good to pair with that film. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that Hansberry inserted some comments about the characters in the stage directions that really needed to be incorporated into the dialogue, because an audience seeing the play without knowing those comments won't be able to glean them otherwise.

`A Raisin in the Sun' by Lorraine Hansberry is a play that has become a true American classic. In 1959 it hit Broadway like no other. James Baldwin proclaimed, "never before in the entire history of the American theater had so much of the truth of black people's lives been seen on stage." Since its opening, this play has garnered worldwide acclaim and spawned movies, music scores and literature.The play depicts the plight of an African-American family, the Youngers, struggling in the 1950s. The title, inspired by a Langston Hughes' poem, refers to Walter Younger's dream to make it out of the South Side of Chicago. "What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up / Like a raisin in the sun?....Or does it explode?"Hansberry's realism is evidenced by the vividness and believability of the characters. They are so rich and powerful that over the years they have been portrayed only by some of the biggest names in the African-American theatrical community: Sidney Poiter, Ruby Dee, Esther Rolle, Ossie Davis, Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald. In 1994, I was fortunate to see the play at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA starring the late Esther Rolle as Lena Younger and Kenny Leon, now director, as Walter Younger. I was not disappointed.It is not by luck that this play has stood the test of time and made its indelible mark on the pages of African American literature. Take a few moments to observe the cast of characters through the playwright's pen and see the reason why it is a classic.

Lorraine Hansberry's classic 1959 drama about an African-American family struggling to move to a better neighborhood in Chicago, but fighting redlining and overt racism every step of the way. Still frequently performed, and well worth reading in book form as here.

What a great story! I had to read this for a class and i hesitated because I felt like I knew the story. I felt like it was going to be an over-exaggerated play about poor black people in a poor community trying to come up, and it was that. But, somehow there was more depth to the characters and plot than I expected. By the end of the second act, I found myself all twisted up inside the characters' conflicts and personalities because they were not much different than my own personal struggles. By the end of the play, I was begging for the playwright to give me some advice on how to quench this inner conflict within myself. This was an absolute masterpiece!

I paid a little extra to get the book with the cover as it was advertised in the listing. It was a completely different cover that I could have gotten cheaper elsewhere. False advertising.

The plot is amazing. The character are great. It can even get emotional sometimes. I hate reading, but this book kept me in, and also, it was made for a movie! So not only is there the book, there’s the movie! The only problem is that it cusses a lot so don’t let your 9 ur old kids read this book
