More than half of this book is dedicated to describing research that shows that males are more confident than females. After reading one example after another, I was left feeling that there was not much hope for females when it came to learning confidence. Only chapters 6-8 cover how females can raise their confidence level (or, in the case of chapter 7, how you can raise a confident daughter), and even then the advice is basically limited to "Be willing to fail. Take action. Feel the fear and do it anyway." If you really want to know how to raise your confidence level and get along in society, reading "The Charisma Myth" might be time better spent.

I bought this book awhile ago, before I retired, because I was in an ill-fitting job, a quiet introvert among a group of extremely confident extroverts, and I was desperate for help. I didn't read it at that time. I wish I had. I have never been good at self-promotion, but in a workplace full of those who are, it's necessary. And this book shows how reasonable and honest self-promotion is a good thing and not a display of arrogance. We think nothing of men pushing themselves forward and touting their accomplishments, but in women it's considered tacky.This book points out how men learn, from childhood on, how to be confident, how to fail without feeling like a failure, while women tend to back away from that. Perhaps it is changing now, but that is definitely how it was when I was growing up. And worse, it was such a part of the social fabric that I never even thought twice about it. Women who talked themselves up were haughty. Humility was more attractive for women. But this left us vulnerable in the workplace, relegated to the back as men naturally push forward, and that is what the boss sees, leaving women's contributions unnoticed or under-noticed. I experienced this myself as, uncomfortable speaking up, I would hear others say what I was silently thinking and they got credit while I appeared mute and empty of ideas. Very foolish on my part. This book helps explain a lot of the thinking behind these types of actions and shows ways to change.Truly, I thought this would be just another flavor of the day business book but I was pleasantly surprised. It is primarily aimed at the work world but contains information useful at any point in life. I'm glad I finally read it.

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. This books is a bit fluffy but an absolute must-read for any lady out there. Why do women not negotiate as well as men? Why are (some) women not taken as seriously as men in the workplace? This book mentioned so many things that I used to do myself and I could see how i'm stacking the deck against myself without even knowing it. I read it before a salary negotiation and as a result, I upped my initial asking number (and they gave it to me!). It's a thin book so you'll finish it in an afternoon or two. Also half of it is fluffy and skim-able. Again, if you're a lady, it's an absolute MUST read.

I really enjoyed reading this book - it was like a summary of the many instances of my own crises of confidence through my life, and provided much food for thought. I had forgotten (at nearly 68 years of age) that I used to be so unsure of myself - and yet all the examples they cited of women whom they'd interviewed all sounded horrifyingly familiar. I think those of us who are older, who have stuck it out in our careers, have gradually learned that we must keep taking action, stop over-thinking, and accept being less than perfect, but, it was lovely to see the way they charted those conclusions all laid out so clearly.I am recommending the book to many of my younger women friends and clients. I am also discussing it with the men in my life too - because the men have no idea how deeply pervasive the feelings of inadequacy can be in their very capable and clearly intelligent women.

This book has a lot of interesting science but besides that I found it hard to stay focused when reading it. I basically forced myself to finish it because I hate starting books and not finishing them. I do think that other people may enjoy this book more though considering I tend to enjoy thrillers and self help books the most. I thought this book would be like a self help book but it wasn't quite to my taste.

I have read a lot of female empowerment books and what I loved about this one was how they roped genetics as part of the confidence issue. I thought it was really interesting to see how our DNA influences us-- but also to know that we can surpass our genetic makeup and pave our own path with confidence.

Keep in mind something I look for when buying books for my little boy is representation of a diverse group of kids, which is more and more being incorporated into children's stories.The cover art and the language choice led me to belive that the characters in the book would at least be diverse. I was wrong: although the language and sentence structure is a great read for my son, the characters in the book were not diverse which is quite unrealistic seeing as this language is spoken by a diverse population of people specifically in Nigeria. This book might work for some people who maybe don't know the language and are interested, but as a mother who is trying teach her child to be confident in themselves, and at the same time respect other cultures; this book to me was just CULTURAL APPROPRIATION OF THE HIGHEST DEGREE.Quite disturbing. NO RESPECT was given to the Igbo culture and the native speakers of the language. Apparently this company does the same book for different languages, which is wrong! You cannot take a "cookie cutter" approach to Children stories in a culture you are unfamiliar with because kids are extremely impressionable, you must pay homage to the culture and not make everyone white just to make $8.99 on a book sale.Even the Thai and Israeli versions look the exact same. They should at least try to change the characters and add unique cultural symbols because otherwise, regardless of their intentions, it seems like an attempt to whitewash somebody else's culture.

This was a disappointment to Igbo culture, I mean, seriously? Not a good read. The illustration itself is ridiculous. I was expecting much more of a true representation of the Igbo culture. This wasn't it.

This book grabbed me within the first couple of pages. Having started in Law Enforcement in a different major city about 8 years after Ralph Friedman, I found myself nodding and cheering him on as he discussed the mindset, processes and beliefs that officers operated under back in the day. This book caused me to do a lot of reflecting on the "good old days," as well as regretting that I never had the opportunity to work a tour with Friedman. Friedman doesn't attempt to gloss over mistakes he made, he puts them out front for all to read. He blends his personal and professional experiences with humor and solid action to keep the reader turning the pages; and when arriving at the end of the book, wishing for more. So I am a fairly serious amateur photographer. And I love Scott Kelby books. I feel these books are aimed at photographers with at least a rudimentary understanding of the relationship between shutter speed, ISO, and aperture (f-stop). But if not, this series of books will still help you (more on that further down).So if you understand those three issues you got everything down at least in theory, right? Not exactly. In practice, it is very easy for you to get lost in the trees rather than see the 'big picture' no pun intended. Kelby's books brings practical tips to help you focus- okay I will stop with the puns but beware Kelby's puns are better (or worse??) than mine.For instance, Kelby will remind you that perspective is huge (ahem so is exposure- see the relationship mentioned above). If you can't get the shot your looking for- MOVE. Get under. Shoot down. Get Closer. Get Farther away. This is where understanding the relationship between ISO, aperture, and shutter speed will help to get a nice shot.There are sections of each book broken down by the type of photography you are interested in (sports, landscapes, portraits, etc) as well as equipment recommendations for every budget (well sorta- this is an expensive hobby).And for those who are new to photography, this is where these books will help you. In each section he gives tips such as which f stop to use, where to focus, how to frame the shot, etc. Typically, the photos included as examples list the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Further, at the end of book he provides you with recipes on how to recreate shots.I think these books best serve the novice to intermediate and possibly advanced photographer. For those starting in photography I do think these books offer quite a bit of value if for no other reason then you can start producing some pretty impressive shots. Further, he does an excellent job going through recommended equipment based on budget. Yup, you did it; you bought that big fat ($,$$$) daddy camera. It's got bells and whistles coming out of every corner. There are more buttons than you can shake a stick at. And yet... you only know how ti use it in "Auto" because every time you try to use those handy dandy buttons / features your pictures are terrible. Really, really terrible! STOP! Seriously, stop buy these books and put that camera to good use. Your photographs will get so much better!I can't say enough how much these books have helped my photography. I have highlights all over my Kindle versions for all types of things that I like to shoot. I just go to the highlight that fits my need and BAM! better pictures!Some reviewers have mentioned Scott's humor, I for one truly thank him for it. He's corny (totally corny), he's cheesy and yet he's kept a dry and somewhat boring subject fun! Seriously people lighten up! Lets face it there's only so much f5.6, ISO 100, aperture, shutter speed, you can read before you hear Charlie Brown's teachers voice in your head (WAH, WAH, WAH, WAH). The humor to keeps you reading!If you are like me and you just want to know how to take "X" type of shot or "Y" type of shot without having to understand a bunch of technical lingo these are the books for you. However, when you want to know the theory or understand more about why a photo did or didn't work you can read his concise (and humorous / corny) descriptions to gain the additional technical knowledge.My only, only negative would be to the publisher... Please for the love of heaven format the book to fit an iOS device! Like chapter headings at the top of the page instead of at the bottom!

I started shooting over 30 years ago. While I have always been enthusiastic about photography, I've never spent much time learning how to shoot better. I have followed some photo sites & blogs on & off, and a couple of friends are pro photographers, so I've picked up some things from them. Even so, I am finding Kelby's book series worthwhile. His writing style is easy and fun and the tips are easy to follow. I'm still on book 1, but I'm enjoying it. Many of the tips and insights aren't new to me, but they also haven't completely worked themselves into my DNA in shooting to the point that they are automatic, so the reminders are helpful. I plan to read through this slowly, practicing some of these tips & insights as I go along, so that I can be more intentional about incremental improvement.If you are a hobbyist like me, or if you are just getting started, this series of books from Kelby is fantastic. You really can't beat the price, and you are sure to learn some new things, or have some old, forgotten things brought to the fore. Highly recommended.

Ok I'm an old skool film guy originally. Digital is just a different tool. The books are really full of little tips that help you focus on your photography. I like the trend in these books to break down and show the setups and options you can try.It's all about playing folks. I'd say that as a set the value is pretty good. Glad I did not pay for each one. The first two are more dated, I believe book one is from 2006. As I have a Kindle and a tablet I tend to read on both. I suggest you use the Amazon Kindle app for these. Pictures in this book are pretty good and help you following along with what Kelby is saying. IMO his acknowledgements and forward are a little too much for me, but he does get to the meat pretty quick. All in all not bad. I suggest following Joe McNally. He's a much better photog and appears in these books also.
