I enjoyed "The Field Guide to Sports Metaphors" as there is something new on every page. Chetwynd's writing style is also both breezy and informative; this book reads much like "How the Hot Dog Found its Bun." Both books are easily readable in one sitting or something to read a chapter or two at a time.

It was a fun and educational read. Also very necessary for those that have an interest in language and history of phrases. So much of our language and phrases used in society today come from sports

Full of interesting information on lots of sports. I bought this to use with my h.s. English students and have spreads created several intriguing lessons for them, using research skills and literary elements. Highly successful.

I bought this for my husband, who doesn't "love" anything, but he has enjoyed reading this. some things he knew, and a lot he had never heard. I would think almost any guy or sports-minded gal would enjoy this. as soon as I can find where he laid it down, I plan on reading it too. might be considered good bathroom reading!

I love paracord and I love how durable it is. This book gives you everything to know to make amazing projects for outdoor. There are patterns for everything from dog leads to watch straps. Brilliant book for everyone and the projects would make brilliant presents. The book is well worth the price. Easy to understand instructions with easy to follow pictures.

IT RATES ONE STAR ONLY BECAUSE THE GOOD QUALITY PHOTOS AND VERY LARGE PAGES....was impressed. Now that the good comments are out of the way...,here's the truth. It has only 49 pages including the back cover the directions were vague at best and unless you have extensive knot tying skills and paracord tying skills this book is not for you. The best way to describe it would be he started on his directions then had an ADD moment and went to lunch and forgot where he left off and started 10 steps further down the road. But if you want to book with good photos and a good description of the finished product it's an OK book to get for reference. Spend more money on a very detailed descriptive book that a beginner who's never heard of para cord could use.

I was most disappointed by the small number (12) of actual projects. It went over about 18 different knots but not in step by step fashion. The simpler knots were no problem but the more complex knots were shown in loose form. An intermediate to advanced paracorder could follow them, but overall, this book was just not what I was looking for.

This book, lots of nice photos but lacks in content. Very few paracord projects. Extremely disappointed with the amount of content.

Extremely underwhelming with no popular knots.... no survival bracelets, no cobra knots, no diamond knots, crappy explanation of the monkeyball and horrendous examples of knots he does explain - often with missing first steps. WTF? Do yourself a favor and simply Youtube any of these and don't waste your money on this waste of a tree. Complete crap.

I have to say, I am disappointed with this book. I am not certain what it wants to be. A starter book? It spends 19 pages of 49 on absolute beginner information. Then the projects get into initial views, but unless you know the knot, you may not figure it out. Need to be well beyond beginner to follow.On the positive, Kindle version inexpensive, and some decent ideas.

Horrible horrible HORRIBLE!!! RIP OFF! This short booklet has very few popular projects. Does a poor job at explaining how to do them and over all is a waste of time and money. I should have looked at all the other bad reviews better. I'm going to try and return it. No wonder they don't tell you how many (few) pages it is. No one would buy it!

Very colorful and nice pictures. Not enough instructions and doesn't have any calculations for determining length of cord needed. Found WAY better directions on YouTube and it was free. Sorry! Hate to do negative reviews, but my son bought this with his own money and has been very upset with the purchase. He can't follow the directions easily and I agree that it is difficult to follow. Was hopeful for this and had good reviews, but wish we could return item

Really not much substance. A few projects, that's all. I really dislike the use & recommendation of tools where NO instruction is given as to how to make them. Reliance on commercial jigs? Really? Is this a book or an infomercial? Given its failings, I can't recommend it. Find another source, one that's more complete.

Sure the anecdotes stop in 1985 but they provide a fascinating look at what it was like to be a cricketer in the 1960's - 1980's: lemon squash and biscuits, nutjobs like Close, eccentrics like Dexter and Boycott.Brearley gives you his step-by-step guide to being a captain and what pitfalls such a position brings up. Sam Mendes chips in with the introduction, having read this book when he was having difficulties with 'American Beauty'.

What a great read for cricket & also for some of the simple life lessons of working with people on a day-to-day basis.

Although this book will be primarily of interest to cricketers, it's a mistake to regard it just as a cricket book. Brearley's profession enables him to write authoritatively on captaincy as one aspect of the broader skills of leadership and motivation. Anyone interested in management would find this book as helpful as any of the reference works available on the subject.Brearley was one of the finest captains I have seen in over 50 years of watching cricket. Richie Benaud and Imran Khan, in different ways, were as successful in lifting their teams to great performances, but they were both great cricketers in their own right. Brearley was the weakest player in the side for most of his career as a test captain and the success of the team when he was leading it is testament to how important leadership is.Thoroughly recommended. I wish he'd write an autobiography!

What strikes readers of Brearley's treatise on captaining a cricket side is its relevance so long after it was written. Though it deals with a dying era of wildly eccentric English cricketers the likes of which we will never see again (Close, Dexter, Underwood, Cowdrey et.al) and the golden era of county cricket that professional sport finally replaced, his thought's on the game still hold as true as the day he penned them. Captaincy is still all of the things Brearley discusses and very little he doesn't. Even his predictions seem to be by a man who had seen the future. His discussion of the new trend of 'sledging,' the over aggressive nature of the modern players and his distaste for them seem more than justified today.With England coming to realise in recent times that a side will only be as good as the commitment the team shows, leadership becomes ever more prized. Recent sides have rallyed round a strong leader and become greater than the sum of parts because of it. That having been said, it is Brearley's point that the Australian's have always selected a team and then picked a captain from amongst them that seems to reveal a much deeper issue for the English game. Afterall, Brearley only averaged just above 20 for his country, yet still had a safe pair of hands in the field, something the present side still lacks. Dr. Shatkin’s book is based on science and at the same time is very easy to read. Dr. Shatkin debunks myths in healthcare and guide us to do what science indicates it works: from parenting interventions, physical activity, limiting access to “screens”, to the benefits of mindfulness and gratitude. Highly recommended to every parent, but especially for the parents of tweens and teens and probably also for the parents of young adults. Very important book also for teachers. This book is just really well written. It is that combination of story and science that draws you in and leaves you feeling enriched. My idea of how the adolescent mind works was really shifted (and how my mind used to work) and I work with kids! This is the book that every parent with an adolescent needs to read!

Born To Be Wild by Jess Shatkin is one of those books that percolates after you’ve read it. Dr. Shatkin expertly weaves well-known notions of adolescence and parental guidance strategies with cutting edge neuroscience and novel interpretations of economists’ theories on decision-making using compelling vignettes. While it is easy to resonate with Dr. Shatkin’s comfortable and non-defensive disclosures as a teen and a parent, the book also pulls for reflection on one’s own decisions in ways that can catch you off guard. As a parent of now young adults who made it through adolescence on quite different trajectories I can see how valuable this book would have been to me had it been written earlier. As a professional in child and adolescent mental health I plan to recommend this book to parents well before their children become teens. Given the substantive nature of Born to be Wild’s many lessons I expect this book to be a resource for many years to come.

If you have a teenager or young adult you should read this book! What I love about Dr. Shatkin’s book is that he uses humor and personal stories to explain complex concepts such as the neuroscience behind why teenagers take risks. This not only makes the book fun to read, but it makes these complicated concepts understandable. What makes this book so valuable is that it illustrates how to apply the science in “real life.” For example, Shatkin shows how most parents inadvertently go wrong in talking to our kids about risky situations. He then gives specific examples of the “right” language to use to talk to your teenagers about risky behavior. I’m already starting to use the suggested “conversations” with my high-school daughter and wish I had this book when my older two kids were teenagers.

As a trustee of a small liberal arts college, I come into contact with students on a regular basis. In this role, I work daily to reconcile the college's need to keep them safe while helping them to thrive and to build their resilience. This book has given me new insights into and appreciation of adolescents and a greater understanding of the personal and academic choices they make.

Curtsies and Conspiracies is the second book in the Finishing School Series. This world is a blend of paranormal, steampunk, and some romance. I love this world so much! It’s like someone sat down and took everything that I love and put it all together. Sophronia has now been at Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing School for Girls of Quality for sit months and it is now time for a review.Does one need four fully grown foxgloves for decorating a dinner table for six guests? Or is it six foxgloves to kill four fully grown guests?In this installment the Season is upon us and the dirigible is leaving the moors and heading to London. Why is a covert school going to announce its self in London? Something is afoot.Just thought I would share the below quote:)One woman’s Petunia is another one’s poison.I loved watching these characters grow and learn real lessons. They deal with real emotions and lean that there are real consequences for their actions. As a parent of a teenager I love to see this in media, too many times characters do not have to deal with the consequences of their actions and that does not do justice to younger readers. When your child gets to a certain age there is only so much that they listen too because they think they know better. It is just a result of them being that age not a child and not yet an adult. (yes I know have the Brittney Spears song going through my head).One thing that I really like about these books is that each book wraps up nicely and there is not a huge cliff hanger. You can feel satisfied with the ending yes you are left wanting more but not to the point of wanting to scream NOOOOOO when you get to that last page. Gail make you feel so invested in these characters that you feel like you need to see what happens next. No matter which character you are rooting for they all have an arc and you see them grow in some way. It takes a truly talented person to not just improve your main characters but try to improve all of your side characters at the same time so that no one is just singled out.The budding romance in this story I love. From the outside they do not belong however everyone sees it and I love how some of the other characters encourage it for the happiness of those involved. I am also for a sucker when one of the characters is quite blind to it.

The second half of Sophronia's first year (or maybe it's the middle part of her first year. All I know is a lot happens to the wily girl and I see plenty more on the horizon.) is just as deadly and dangerous as the first half. With the added bonus of boys. Boys from the boiler room and a duke's son and her best friend's brother and a vampire or two.(Where are the werewolves? I ask. Their lack is a disgrace! WHERE ARE THE WEREWOLVES!?!?! I should probably point out that the lone werewolf NEARLY made up for the lack, but my inherent love of werewolves makes me demand MOAR!)*ahem* So. Sophronia. She's ingenious and sneaky and she can ferret out the inner secrets of the teachers and students of the school faster than anyone else. Which is fortunate because there's a lot of STUFF going on that needs to be taken care of. I'm torn about the love triangle because as much as I like Soap, I can't see anything coming of it due to the fact that the girls are conditioned to expect they'll have their husbands picked out for them. I mean, this is a THING at the school. A THING. Like, they might be told EXACTLY who to marry to advance the cause. Or whatever.While I like Soap, I really liked Felix. Because, well, he amuses me.Fast paced and appropriately ridiculous at times (OMG! The NAMES! LOL!), I'm completely looking forward to the next book. Because I sense more werewolves. PREFACE The challenges in today's schools are increasing in frequency, complexity, and intensity, requiring school leaders to enter the schoolhouse with practical experience that prepares them to take immediate and definitive action regarding multifaceted issues. The need for the beginning administrator to have practical experience is so great that many universities are changing their leadership preparation programs to reflect a more practice-oriented approach. One organization advocating this change is the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC). The change advocated by this organization is very influential and offers a "new leadership paradigm," one that incorporates what ISLLC believes is required behavior for school leaders. Through a series of six standards, ISLLC presents a common core of knowledge, disposition, and performances that link leadership to productive schools and enhance educational outcomes. The standards represent an effort to refine the skills of school leaders and to couple leadership with effective educational outcomes (ISLLC, 1996). These standards, the recommended changes in educational leadership preparation programs, and the development of other related performance assessment instruments have influenced a renewal of the approaches used to prepare school leaders. This change is occurring in terms of classroom instruction, assessment of leadership skills and attributes for licensure, and practical application of theoretical concepts. This text is designed to support the new thrust by providing a series of scenarios that incorporate the behaviors informed by the ISLLC Standards. Also, theory is connected to practice in a manner that allows the prospective school leader an opportunity to reflect on problems and issues that exist in today's schools. A second, yet crucial, objective is to connect the standards and the literature on school leadership to scenarios, questions, and suggested solutions. In this regard, the indicators of the ISLLC Standards are embedded in the scenarios in both a positive and negative manner, allowing the reader to view their practical implications for school leaders. Practicing the Art of Leadership: A Problem-based Approach to Implementing the ISLLC Standards is a compilation of scenarios and related exercises that represent the kinds of challenges and issues that surface in today's schools. It is Significantly different from the traditional case study format, which probes in an in-depth manner issues that build on one another and need to be resolved. Instead, this work recognizes that definitive action is extremely critical to the success of school leaders as they function on a day-to-day basis in a setting inherently filled with complex challenges. This text is designed for use in a culminating course of a leadership preparation program. Therefore, the content is written based on the assumption that individuals who utilize it have already developed a basic knowledge of administrative theories and concepts that inform leadership behavior. However, if the text is used in an earlier course, it will need to be supplemented by a text that treats the theoretical concepts of leadership in a more comprehensive manner. The caution to be remembered in the use of this material (as with most behavioral material) is that there is no substitute for reflective reasoning. The reader must take care to select a solution based on the interrelationships between the people, the situation, the skills needed, and the environmental forces. An appropriate mix of theory, reflective thinking, and prescription must be identified. I hope the prospective school leaders and the practitioners who read this text and work through the scenarios enjoy it and find it beneficial. The reading is smooth and well labelled into topics. The scenarios are helpful for promoting thinking about what we would do in each situation. The only downside is the print is somewhat small but I am also somewhat old. I needed to purchase this book for a class and I found it very interesting. In Massachusetts, we do not talk a lot about the ISLLC standards so this was a good book to get me up to speed with this national standard.
