3 stars -- Oh dudes... I know I've been conflicted about books before, but I can honestly say this one is probably my most conflicted ever. Because the things I loved, I LOVED. But there were things that I essentially hated too...or at least strongly disliked, b/c I really try not to hate things.So what did I love first: the essential quality of Lauren Layne-ness to the book. There is a reason I love most Lauren Layne books, and it's often in the witty repartee of the characters. There's just something that always makes me laugh and has me delighted by either the dialogue or the internal thoughts of the characters. And while this seems like a really small thing, it was enough to level this book off at 3 stars for me, b/c I would give that aspect 5 stars if I could. She also writes pretty great kissing/steamy scenes, and this book was no exception.What did I decidedly NOT like: when it comes right down to it, I really didn't *like* either character. They both had good moments, so it's not an all-out hate or anything...there were even things I loved about both of them. But in the end I mostly just wanted to smack them, for different reasons.Brynn was a witch with a b. There's no other way to put it. I get (and love) the depth of history that went into explaining how she became this person of lists and regimented everything. And I actually really felt for how her childhood bullying stayed with her right into her 30s. I think people underestimate the scars of systematic bullying and how it can affect you. I actually liked that. But the problem is, even if you excuse her walls to protect herself, she was still kind of mean. And judgmental (of everyone, including other girls...bordering on slut shaming occasionally, but not quite). And stupidly oblivious (stupidly because I really honestly couldn't buy someone being that oblivious to Will's affections). AND SELFISH!! She didn't seem to care to learn about anyone else (most notably her sister and Will). And I didn't buy into her growth. All of a sudden being an orthodontist is boring? So who is she?? What does she want out of life? What defines her? I have zero answers.And while I wanted to love Will, b/c on one side of the coin, the way he held onto his love for Brynn through 15 freaking years was kind of adorable (and even the epilogue almost had me swooning). And he was freaking hilarious sometimes. But he was also REALLY REALLY mean. Like, I'm only so-so on enemies to lovers tropes as it is, but to hear the things these two said back and forth to each other just made me cringe and made my heart hurt. He was basically a bully. And he wasn't nearly as understanding as I would have liked when he found out about her childhood bullying. And OMG, the games!! WHY WOULD YOU NOT JUST TALK TO HER AND FESS UP??? Why would you constantly test her, and then get mad when she thinks you hate her and isn't getting it? Why'd you have to break my heart by having these horrible qualities so I can't love you for your good qualities?? It just wasn't enough.The whole book is basically just terrible communication, and you know I hate lack of communication tropes. And when he finally just tells her THE TRUTH, he gives her 5 seconds to absorb it, and then bails. UGH.So you see what I mean? If it hadn't been for the witty dialogue and moments of great connection scattered here and there, it would have been a 2 star. That's how much I love the things I loved. Because these characters just didn't redeem themselves. I'm just not a forgiving reader I guess. I can't tell you how bummed I am, b/c honestly there were moments of awesomeness that obviously had me hoping for a good ending. *sigh* OK, I'm just going to stop. :(
This was my least favorite book out of the 6 of her books I’ve read so far. I just hate it when the main reason for a romance not working out is miscommunication and/or denial. This book has both.I still gave it 3 stars because I did want them to end up together, and I did want to keep reading to find out what happened. That, and Will’s wit, were pretty much the saving grace of this book.Here’s what I had a problem with: you don’t annoy a woman to get her attention (that behavior ends after the age of 11), happiness doesn’t come from a life that seems perfect on paper, don’t deny what you know you feel and think because you are afraid of disappointing family members, don’t treat another person like s*** because you feel like s*** or because you need that person.If you didn’t get it yet, I didn’t like Brynn. She needs the perfect everything. But that means everything being cold, not being passionate about anything. How can that seem like the perfect life? I don’t get it.
Since they were teenagers, Brynn and Will have been at each other’s throats like cats and dogs. They can’t stand each other but three years ago, Brynn made a huge mistake by sleeping with him and not long after that, Will left the state. Now, Brynn’s just turned thirty-one and feeling more lost than ever and not only is Will back in town but he’s also her new neighbor. When Brynn’s boyfriend breaks up with her, she decides to take a break… from herself. Who better to spice up her life than the very person who’s the exact opposite of her? Will’s been in love with Brynn for years and when she not only wants to have a fling with him but be a completely different person, he just can’t say no to her. He’ll do anything to get to her embrace the real Brynn but will his patience run out when Brynn proves more stubborn than he thought?Oh my God. This book! I don’t really know what to say exactly. It took me on an emotional ride because we get Brynn, who is this Ice Princess but still self-conscious and can’t let go of the fact that she used to be a social outcast and then there’s Will, who’s perfect and wild and free. Total opposites but who have so an insane amount of sexual tension that NO ONE could miss seeing the connection they have. As characters, I adored the fact that they bickered so much. Some of Will’s barbs were cruel and I didn’t really get why he would insult her so much but, oh, how it riled Brynn up! She became ALIVE when he got her angry and that was exactly what he wanted. At the same time, Brynn was able to get Will all hot and bothered without even realizing it!They’re a match made in Heaven, even if it took them going through Hell to finally come together. Still, this book is about more than discovering their mutual and long-awaited love. It’s about growing for both of them. Brynn has made it her life to have the perfect job, the perfect body, the perfect boyfriend/husband, the perfect life, etc. However, this book was like a self-discovery for her to the point that she finally found the woman in herself that made her comfortable. Will has always been the partier, the playboy, the slacker but in this one, he shows his true colors and the fantasies that he wants with Brynn – a life together, babies, LOVE. It’s sweet and intense and totally engrossing. I just couldn’t get enough of their chemistry and I loved that I connected so much with them that I even cried! Often! I felt so sad for Will’s unrequited love and Brynn’s confusion towards him. It took a lot for Will to admit his feelings but also a lot for Brynn to really understand how much she NEEDS Will in her life.My only real niggle was that Brynn didn’t really know Will at all. Will knew so much about her to the point of being obsessed but Brynn still doesn’t really know Will by the end of the book. She doesn’t know his favorite ice cream, his favorite sandwich or anything like that. It didn’t seem like she made an effort to get to know him during their fling so while I loved that they got together and definitely FELT their love, I just didn’t feel like she KNEW him as much as he knew her, beyond the judgmental assumptions she had made of him already.Still, in the end, I absolutely loved the book. It has its flaws but, for me, it was a very emotional book and I definitely connected with both characters. I wasn’t sure whether I liked the flashbacks, especially the ones that seem to be just repeat scenes from the first book, Only With You, but it was still a phenomenal story where Brynn grew and found herself and Will finally got his girl. I’m crossing my fingers there will be another book in this series because I don’t want to let these characters go just yet! If you like Ms. Layne’s writing or enjoyed the first Best Mistake novel, then you’ll definitely enjoy this one!
