This book has helped me very much, and I think it will help either sex equally...

Mars and Venus in the Workplace, a practical guide for improving communications and getting results at work by John GrayFound this book interesting and all the differences between a man and a woman in the work place. I still think a lot of the communication between the two are misleadingwhere a woman would dress to get what she wants along with touching and becoming very personal: crying, bringing up family issues, etc. Liked the discussions on how to substantiate asking for a raise.Loved hearing male side of how they perceive things and point system, glad to hear of this.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This is the first Mars/Venus book in the author's series of books that I've read. I have heard several good things about the original book Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. Naturally, curiosity got the better of me, and I purchased a copy of this book.I liked how the author was able to coherently build a framework to explain the differences between men and women. His analogy to interplanetary species having to co-mingle here on earth struck me as original and humorous. There were, however, certain aspects of this book that are a bit disappointing to me. Whereas I agree with most of his points, I wish the author would have included more real world examples and scenarios. In 290 pages of text, only 3 examples were given as to how effective this framework could be.The book's recurring theme and lesson is that men and women basically misunderstand each other because they come from different planets where customs and traditions vary. The book is full of 2-3 column charts on what men and women should or shouldn't say at certain situations. It attempts to explain what is going on in the mind of a woman as a result of what a man does or says, and vice versa. It also offer remedial dialogue for what to say when a "misunderstanding" is about to occur.Another point the author drills into the readers mind is: Men are quick to arrive at solutions whenever a woman approaches him with a problem, not knowing that this is her way of including him in her world and a way of leading up to her solution. It states, half a dozen times throughout the book, that women share their emotions with men in the workplace not as a way of putting blame or soliciting advice, but rather a way to make an emotional connection. Men, on the other hand, view this as a sign of weakness and a waste of time. The author terms men as Mr. Fix It because men seem to always quickly offer a solution not fully hearing out what a woman has to say. Believe it or not, that was the single most important takeaway of the whole book. Each chapter repeats a variation of this lesson.Toward the end of the book, the author crams in a chapter about sexual harrassment. Why it occurs (based on his framework of interplanetary misunderstanding) and what can be done to relieve or tolerate it. I do think the topic of sexual harrassment in the workplace is relevant, but I felt it was glossed over. The second to the last chapter is devoted to essentially two checklists: 101 Ways Men can Empathize with Women and 101 Ways Women can Empathize with Men. And there really were 101 items on each list. This struck me as odd because it reminded me of a little book called Life's Little Instruction Book by H. Jackson Brown . It had suggestions like compliment her hairstyle, offer to bring her a glass of water, carry around a family photo in your wallet, etc. It just seemed really odd to me that this would be included in this book.(I'm curious as to whether this book stemmed from the author's workshop materials or the other way around. Maybe this book is the summary of his specialized courses to institutions.) Either way, I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book because what the author has spent almost 300 pages trying to explain, I can capture in 3 paragraphs.

The biggest thing missing from my MBA education was learning how to interact with other people. Business is nothing if we can't communicate effectively and regularly. This book explains in clear terms how men can understand women and communicate effectively. We men can't talk to women the way we do with other men. We are very different. By following Dr. Gray's guidelines, men can learn how to earn the trust and respect of female co-workers. We can learn easy ways to speak the woman's language and understand her perceptions. The most fascinating aspect is the description of women's emotions, what they mean, and positive responses men can use to increase productivity and create a pleasant workplace. Working in harmony is the only way to go.I should think that this book can be especially helpful to women, as they are basically working in a world that has been designed and run by men. As Dr. Gray says, a woman's challenge in the workplace is greater than a man's. While the books and research of Gail Evans and Dr. Deborah Tannen and others have described gender differences, this book by Dr. Gray sheds light on many aspects of workplace problems and offers solutions that are easy, respectful, effective, and even fun.

Dr Gray has done it again...another outstanding book. His insights have assisted me with my male(martians)client. My practice is now brimming with males....because I now understand not to give unsolicited advice...but rather ask better questions. The tools and skills should be taught in schools.I wish I had of know the differences when I first started out in the workplace.Bravo Dr Gray... It is truly amazing how little changes make such big differences. The quality of my relationships since using the mars venus principles has gone to levels I had never dreamed of! As a single parent with two boys,I am grateful for all the knowledge and practical advice....It is wonderful to have such a close connection with them. I would suggest everyone in the workplace read this. How wonderful to go back to basics, courtsey, shivilery.I could only image how much more pleasant, loving and caring the world would be if everyone adopted Grays work! Keep up the much needed work! God bless him for trying to open peoples eyes and hearts!!!!

Loved this book. The art was unique and refreshing and the story managed to be a story (not just a biographical sketch like so many other picture books do with real life figures). The reviewer who thought the art was weird? Ignore.

Great book on St. Martin de Porres for children and great info for Adults.

This was a very nice book. Beautiful pictures, and a great story. Be aware that there is a lot of words per page, so it is a book to read to children who are a little older, or for older children who are good readers.

The illustrations by David Diaz are beautiful. They match the inspirational story. Color and perspective are excellent. The child looks saintly and in bliss.

This is a beautifully illustrated book by the gifted David Diaz . The story is uplifting and will bring joy tomyour heart !

I got this book for the obvious reasons. It's about a marvelous Saint and geared toward young kids. I was very disappointed with it. I really wanted to love it, the illustrations are beautiful! However, this book portrays the clergy in a very negative light and not just a little bit. On about 60% of the pages in the book a negative message is put forth about the clergy by the way it is written. It is true that St. Martin faced much adversity and resistance, even from the Church but I don't want to be reading my kids a book that makes Priests out to be bad guys. Sure, they might have (and we don't know all of the details) been in error but this book is over the top and inappropriate. Surely there was a more respectful and helpful way of writing the story. Cultivating respect for clergy is important to our family and so I give this book 1 star. In fact, I think that St. Martin would have much more respect for clergy than this author does! After all, books about the saints should foster love of The Church that the saints themselves loved. And one more little thing, why is St. Martin the only Dominican in a Dominican habit? The rest are always wearing red...

Before I even read Martin de Porres: The Rose in Desert, as a catholic I had knew a bit about who he was and what people prayed for him to bring or protect. I enjoyed getting to read this book in that it was Culturally Authentic to the spanish words used and the context they were used in. The illustrator did a great job incorporating colors. Red was used to describe importance of a person status and hot weather. While Blue was used in a more peaceful parts of the story it described serenity and a time of change. Yellow, another great watercolor was used to describe growth with his lemon tree and growth within himself.Martin de Porres was the son of Spaniard Royal born into the hands of an African Peruvian slave. Through out his life he was consistently frowned upon for his mixed blood. He grew up in the poorest Barrios(urban streets) with his sister where much of land stunk and flooded with rats when the heavens poured down. His father Don Juan de Porres sought out to help his son and daughter from their poor living conditions and brought them to Ecuador to change their future. Martin was apprenticed by his father to become Limas Cirujano (towns surgeon). With his background as a Cirujano, many people began to seek for Martin and his healing hands. He was given lemon seeds that would feed and give him shade all year around by his first patient.Martin sought out to be the best healer that he could and help those in need to regain custody of his rightful name as the Rose of the Desert. The artwork is very artistic and detailed.Color was used effectively to show the mood at the time of the scene.Artwork was very humble. The color green mixed in with yellow was used well to show the growth in Martin as he went town to town helping those who lived in Barrios (urban streets)

In 1962, the Patron Saint of Brotherhood was named. The prayers of all those people seeking harmony in race relations and of mixed-races finally had a Saint and a name in which to make pleas. The world was in need of such a Saint and none other than Martin de Porres could righteously fit the prayers of the need. His journey is captured in this astounding easy reader and picture biography for all children to gather around and to read. Born to an enslaved African mother (Ana Velázquez) and a child of bi-racial heritage; his father was Don Juan de Porres, a Spanish royal, Martin de Porres Velázquez becomes a portrait of a rose in the desert. The writer and illustrator capture Martin as a poor and strange child who uses his skills to greater need. A strange child who’s sweetness is as a scent from lemons, his hands as hope and healing, and his vision beyond skin hues, wealth, life conditions, religion, and animal cruelty as tough humility. The book is a sweet coming story. Martin grows from being despised, to being educated, being a servant to priests, to being needed by all who came to know him, and becoming a canonized Saint some three-hundred years after his death. I’ve read other books about San de Porres, but this one captures, in artistic revelation, the importance of his life. The book is the winner of the 2013 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. My only regret is that the book is not bilingual, which prohibits Spanish language readers from enjoying this story of a native, Latino, from Lima, Peru in his own language.

While not in the nucleus of Discworld canon, by any means (even Ankh Morpork and the Librarian only get brief cameos), Small Gods is one of the more powerfully philosophical books in the series so far, without sacrificing the humor and wit Pratchett is rightly known for. Moreover, after the likes of Moving Pictures and Witches Abroad, which consisted mainly of tightly and loosely stitched (respectively) vignettes and homages and outright transplants of other work, Small Gods refreshingly returns to complete, coherent original narrative, while still giving breadth and diversity enough to support the plurality of independent subplots Pratchett appears to increasingly prefer. Slightly distracting, although I would not go so far as to say detracting from the book overall, is Pratchett's lingering tendency to frame some scenes in ways almost anticipating a cinematic production over a literary work- e.g. awkwardly brief cuts to purely "visual" foreshadowing, or descriptions of visuals and scenery so direct and/or generic as to be more at home in a VFX storyboard than a piece of impactful prose. But, on the whole, as I continue through the series, this one may very well have displaced my earlier favorite, Equal Rites, as a top recommendation.

Small Gods is a novel of Discworld where the world is a flat disc, balanced on the backs of four elephants which are standing on the back of a giant turtle. There are many novels set in Discworld, and most of them are clever, witty, and rapid-fire novels. Almost all of the Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. Each book in a group focuses on one of them, although they cross over and pop up in each others' books all the time. This book is one of the few that stands alone. There are only the fleeting mentions or appearances of the familiar such as Ankh- Morpork (a familiar setting in Discworld), Lu Tse (an ancient monk), and the librarian from the Unseen University (an orangutan). Death has a more substantial appearance, but I would not consider this book to be a novel of Death. This is a story of faith, religion, philosophy, war, loyalty, and integrity. That sounds a bit highfalutin, but do not forget that this is a Terry Pratchett book so it is also satirical, absurd, and occasionally silly. Brutha, the main character, is a naïve novice monk in Omnia. Vorbis is a scheming high priest and head of state of Omnia who dominates through fear and directs their version of the inquisition. These story begins when an eagle drops a turtle in the garden where Brutha is working. The turtle is currently the manifestation of a small god (Om) who regains his consciousness on the descent. Only Brutha can hear the god speak. Antics, diplomacy, treachery, prayer, and great adventure ensue. There is method to the madness. Terry Pratchett does a wonderful job of maintaining the integrity of his absurd world and his characters while keeping everything fresh and creative. As always, the humor is wrapped around serious themes. The discussions of religion, faith, and philosophy are absurd, but thought provoking. Actually, there is a large cast of characters in this book with gods, philosophers, monks, priests, torturers, soldiers, sailors, a turtle, foreign leaders, a fisherman, and so on. I cannot read too many of them in a row, but when I need something different, a Discworld novel is the perfect metaphorical palate refresher. Like all the Discworld books, the tone is satirical and clever. While it makes sense to generally read the books in order, this book can stand alone. These books do not contain any scenes, language, or images that would rate even a PG-13 rating at the movies. If a reader does not have sufficient maturity, much of the book will be wasted, because you won’t get the jokes or understand the satire. It should be impossible to write such pure nonsense that ends up making great sense.

Terry Pratchett's writing is a wonderful balance to the seriousness, and sometimes dryness, of those books we read for our improvement. I often read one alternately with a history, scientific, or even serious novel. They are all well written, funny, often critical, extremely original stories with a message worth thinking over."Small Gods" pokes fun at religion, philosophy, government, and as always human nature. The plot is complex for Pratchett, but woven expertly. As always there rarely is a page where you don't slap your forehead and laugh-or groan. That is why I love Terry Pratchett and am grateful he was such a prolific writer.

This was my first Terry Pratchett book, and I found it intriguing and would recommend it. It doesn't fit neatly into a category, bearing plenty of humor, fantasy, and social commentary along with religion, theology, and philosophy - as a minister, the latter was of great interest. The characters were interesting, from the innocent, challenged young novice to the darkly sinister Deacon to the curious little god and its frustrations. In winding through his story, Pratchett brings the reader on a journey into areas of great contradictions, revealing them in different places and making connections that are worthy but not obvious. The book got me asking many questions in contexts that I had not truly considered before. It was not predictable and the reader was invariably wondering where we might be headed, how and why.Pratchett's style at times seems unnecessarily flippant at first encounter, but it becomes more familiar and less disconcerting as you stay with the story. Other reviewers familiar with the series picked up nuances that a newbie like me would not. Perhaps that explains some of the unexplained, assumptions, and seemingly random items that would pop up and seem more distracting than helpful.I'll probably re-read this, and may sample more of Pratchett's writing. There are questions that got produced that I want to go back and look over further. Try "Small Gods." It has a lot to offer.

I was visiting Holland and Belgium, and got it in electronic form for my tablet. Very good for planning - tells you all interesting things about the towns you want to visit, even small ones. Was very helpful in planning the visit. One minus (and hence - 4 stars) - there are no maps. I am not sure how effective they would have been, but I'd liked to have at list some of them. they were very few, and pretty much uninformative. I downloaded another guide, with maps which could work with tablet's GPS.

We are going on a cruise to Holland and Belgium in the fall and looked for a combined guide. This appears to be the last joint tour book available, so I bought it. It looks like it will be very useful for our cruise.

As advertised and in good condition.

I usually have 2 or 3 different guides as they all typically have some unique information. We took this one along to Belgium last fall and I would recommend it.

Is it well written: Yes.Is it apparently exhaustive in detail: I doubt it.Does it do what it was supposed to do: Yes.I look forward to comparing it to the real thing.

Happy with this item

I was disappointed at the lack of photographs inside the book. I guess you get what you pay for i.e. very little.

In her debut novel, Author Jaime Jo Wright has delivered a compelling tale of murder and mystery through a time split story-line connected by an old abandoned house, the lives it touched, and the long protected secrets it holds. Gripping suspense, multiple plot twists, hair raising terror, and well developed characters travel across the pages and I found myself riveted by Kaine Prescott's and Ivy Thorpe's lives as they converged at The House on Foster Hill. Wright has woven a dual story so intricately entwined it took me to the end of the book to unravel and reveal the truth. And, it was a surprise...not what I was expecting at all. The seamless transition from one era to the other kept the smooth rhythm of the story flowing and held me captive with each turn of the page to the very end.Though the story in both eras has a dark  and ominous feel to it, it also offers light and life. Intertwined with the frightening evil that overshadows the house, a legacy of hope rises and shines through the strong women who refuse to let the house's secret ruin their lives or force them to live in fear; women who look to an eternal future. Wright does an exceptional job weaving faith into everyday moments in a natural, unforced way...as it should be. Talk of God's love and His promises written in scripture were flawlessly laid within casual conversation and deep reflections by the characters. Wright has crafted a well written debut and is an author to watch in the coming years. I look forward to more from her.

This is not my typical genre because it's usually too unrealistic, so when I decided to try this book, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was very pleasantly surprised! Not only did the characters seem real but the mystery itself was woven into the story seamlessly. The dual timeline added a nice twist and was quite interesting. Although there was romance in the book, it was secondary, which I prefer. It's amazing that this is the author's debut novel because it was excellent. Extremely captivating with just the right amount of suspense to keep me turning the pages as fast as possible.I enjoyed this book so much. If other authors would follow suit in writing a realistic mystery/suspense novel, I may give romantic suspense another try. Very well done, Jaime Jo Wright. You nailed it! I look forward to reading more by this author.

Excellent debut novel by Jamie Jo Wright. I don't usually read dual time novels, but the cover of this book just drew me in. The book is every bit as chilling as the cover. It contains all the elements necessary for a great suspense novel - unexplained occurrences, suspicious characters, as well as the spooky old house. Wright balances these with a touch of romance for the two women who find themselves gripped by the mystery of Foster Hill House in two different times. She connects the stories beautifully. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Because I had heard a lot of positive buzz about Jaime Jo Wright’s debut novel, The House on Foster Hill, I thought I’d offer it to my book club as a possibility for our 2018 schedule. The blurb sold it to my group, but it was the actual reading experience that gave it a unanimous thumbs up! We loved the spooky atmosphere, the engaging characters, and the mystery that spanned over a hundred years. Because we read a lot of suspense it isn’t easy to surprise us, but this one did. We never saw the ending coming! We are excited to have found another author to add to our must-read list.Dual plot lines set in the present day and in 1906, appealed to our members who like contemporary and/or historical novels. The two stories intertwine well. The action alternated between Kaine and Ivy’s stories keeping us turning the pages as quickly as possible — we had to know what was happening with both of these engaging and interesting characters. Kaine and Ivy are women of their times, but share a determination to get to the bottom of the mysteries that the shady Foster Hill House presents. Although some of us wanted to shake them from time to time, we generally loved them. The two male characters were a treat as well. Very different from each other, my group was split on which we liked better, but were pleased with how both added to the stories and the main characters’ lives. The book provided great discussion for our group — family history and secrets, human trafficking now and then, and keeping alive the memories of those who have passed.Often my book club gets off task during our monthly discussions, but this month we had no trouble staying focused on The House on Foster Hill. Kudos for an impressive first novel. We look forward to many more from an author to watch.Highly Recommended.Great for Book Clubs.Audience: adults.

The number of times this book gave me the chills! The twists, the turns, the unexpected’s! I enjoy a good book written in a dual timeline, and Ms. Wright does not disappoint. Both threads are well written, characters alive on each page, and the connection from one to the other is evident while keeping the reader guessing. The story lagged for me in a few places, and some of the dialogue didn’t seem in keeping with the era, but not enough to through out of the telling, or put the book down altogether. Seriously, this is a page turner and kept me reading several nights long after I should have put it down. This book was given to me as a gift. I offer my review of my own free will, and the opinions expressed in my review are my own honest thoughts and reaction to this book.#Blogwords, Tuesday Reviews-Day, #TRD, Book Review, The House on Foster Hill, Jaime Jo Wright

Review

"...a great accompaniment to potty training. Young people need to accept their bodily functions, and if happy and colorful books like this help the cause, then I am all for it." - --Kaboose"Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi is part biology textbook, part sociological treatise and all celebration of a very natural process. Both my daughters begged me to read the book over and over again. They marveled at the enormity of the elephant's poop and searched with the skill of a scientist for the tiny specks which represent bug poop. The text is simple and straightforward but not without humor. 'An elephant makes a big poop,' the book begins. 'A mouse makes a tiny poop. A one-hump camel makes a one-hump poop, And a two-hump camel makes a two-hump poop. Only kidding!' The colorful illustrations are eye-catching and deceptively detailed. The poop of each animal species is very distinctive in size, shape and colorA book which doesn't have any preachy overtones but merely explains where and how each living creature poops seems to work for my two-year-old. In fact, it's number one on the bathroom reading list at our house." - --The Expositor

It's a funny book and my child has enjoyed learning that everything does really poop.It probably is better suited for boys, as it does have art that is anatomically correct....so if you don't want to explain what a wee-wee is to your daughter, this might not be for you.My son, who is turning 4 next month, loves this book and often "reads" it by himself.

This is an absolute MUST HAVE for resistance potty trainers! My 3 1/2 year old daughter had been able to control her bowel movements for many months, but she was resistant to potty training and I didn't know how to move the process along. She had been in the habit of doing her big business in a fresh diaper between bath and bedtime. After reading this book for the second night in a row, she announced that she had to poop and wanted to go on the toilet. Voila! Just like that she was on the path. The next day we put on a pull up and went out to get undies. The day after that she was in undies all day and kept trying to pee on the toilet, but not a drop came out. We just had a lot of "leaks" (as I call them instead of accidents) and we went through lots of undies and pants that day. Then on her second day in undies she had figured out the connection between the urge to pee and peeing and we haven't looked back since. This book was, without a doubt, a turning point for us. Do whatever you have to do to find a copy of this book. Especially, if you have a child that loves animals and isn't so much into the princess thing. None of the princess potty books with stickers interested her. Neither did Super Pooper - although that was better than others we had tried. Potty Animals is another great book once they get going with the process, but it won't motivate them to take the plunge. It's more about bathroom etiquette. Buy this book!!!

Just received this book for my almost 17 month old twins (boy/girl). I know they're a bit young but my daughter has recently started taking off her diaper at nap time and has flooded her crib twice (thank goodness no poop!!!) Her brother more playfully tries to take his off, but she is expressing interest in starting to train or seeking attention. Either way its a great time to start learning. We got some books and videos and 2 potty chairs (gonna have to replace BOTH potty chairs but those are different reviews) they had very little interest in the other books, but were fascinated with this. My son was especially interested in the page that shows men and boys from adult to baby all pooping. I think he put together in his head a bit more what happens when he poops in his diaper. He loved the whole book but was especially fascinated seeing a human poop. I have to respectfully disagree with the librarian about this not being appropriate or necessary etc. Not sure exactly how she worded it. Its a completely NATURAL bodily function and I think the attitude that it is a dirty little secret (well ok its dirty, lol) is exactly why kids think poop and farts are funny. Its treated by people with that attitude as something naughty. Well I for one (not sure if librarian is a parent) am praying that I am not one of those parents who wake to find their child has removed diaper and smeared the poop all over their crib, walls, selves etc. I want them to fully understand what poop is and where it goes. This requires SEEING POOP. I thank the author for writing this and it gets an A+ in this house!

PROs: This book has worked wonders for my 2.5 year old toddler. We started reading it to him a day before starting potty training (we put him in big boy underwear on a Saturday morning) and we read it several times a day during the next two to three weeks. He would request it (together with Julie Markes' "Where's the poop?") almost every time he used the potty, especially when he needed to - you guessed it - poop. I strongly believe that the story line and images helped him understand, verbalize and accept the whole process. What I liked in particular:- Simple graphics with bold colors: just the right amount of image and information on each page.- The story line flows logically and there's plenty of room for you to add your own sounds and gestures: be creative and it will amuse your toddler tremendously. You can use it to build up vocabulary. For instance, on the 'All living things eat...", name all the animals (lion, pig) and the things they eat (meat, acorns) and your child will soon repeat them back to you. Try to imagine together what the child on the same page is eating: is it your toddler's favorite foods or (sigh!) some of the foods you would like your toddler to eat.- My son liked to play a 'look and find' game to identity the poop on every page: for some reason, he found the snake page hilarious as he would trace the trajectory of food from the snake's mouth until it comes out as poop; he got better and better at following the snake's curves with his finger, which is great because soon after I started doing tracing exercises with him to prepare him for writing.- The flap on the last page where mommy says "Excuse me! I am making a poop! Please shut the door!". I used the same words when my son would try to follow me to the restroom and he did get the message after a while.(Faux)CONs: Be ready to read this with your toddler TENS of times. But as long as everything makes its way into the potty and you also have fun in the process, it is SO worth it.My son lost interest in this book about one month later, but baby # 2 is on her way and this will be cheerfully used again in a couple of years.

I bought this book as well as a few others to help with his problem of holding in his poop. This is his favorite one of the bunch to read and I am not even exaggerating that two days after getting my books in my son has been pooping fine. He's 2 1/2 and we are just starting potty training but he was holding his poop even with a diaper on. It had been a battle for about two months and I tried everything, laxatives, suppositories, etc. I have to believe that the books is what did it over all the medical stuff!
