Though the reading level is 5th-8th grade, the material is often at an older level. I would lean towards grades 7-9 as the youngest readers for this book.

To the Edge of the World is a great read that really satysfied me. It is based on real life events, even though some of the characters fictional. It is a tale of courage, comradery, and adventure. I reccomend it to anyone who likes books about the sea and/or adventure.

I have read numerous translations of the classic Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu over the years, but this text translated by D.C. Lau is one of the very best I have read. Lao Tzu is considered the founder of “Taoism” and lived in about the same time frame as Confucius. There is an excellent introduction written by D.C. Lau which provides some insight into China at the time Lao Tzu taught his Taoist philosophy.This 192 page paperback book is organized as follows: Lao Tzu book one and book two. List of passages for comparison, and in the appendices it covers the problem of authorship and the nature of the work. There is also a chronological table and an excellent glossary section.This is book is not an easy read; however, it is a volume that should be studied in sections to obtain the most benefit from this text. Nevertheless, this is a classic in philosophical literature and should be read by anyone who desires to be educated in Asian Taoism. The parables are sometimes like philosophical puzzles which force you to think more deeply on the subject matter. As someone who has been involved in the Asian martial and other classical arts most of mylife, I found this book a very interesting read.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives.It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

This was without doubt the best thing I ever did for my son ! I will start by telling you when he took his placement test at the beginning of second grade this year he scored easily into third grade level and almost fourth. Let me tell you how we did it!I ordered it the beginning of his summer vacation. When it got here I divided the number of days to when school started to the number of work pages and it came to 5 pages a day to finish minus Saturdays and Sundays. I got him a note pad and some pencils and erasers and every morning we did our 5 pages. Now granted if it was very hard pages we might do four or even three. But on the same note if they were very easy pages I would do six pages and sometimes seven.This is what I liked about the book.It went progressively. Meaning chapter 1 set the stage for chapter 2 and so on. The book did a great job in teaching skills that would make the next chapter make more sense. Also what I thought was genius on their part was they took a concept and presented it several different ways. For example on telling time it looked at what time is it, how much time is left, how much time would you need, time with pictures, time with word problems, time with games, and time with estimates. With every concept that was taught I felt confident that no matter how the test question was presented to him, he would have some exposure to it the way this book did it!Also what was very important which was a concern to me was always re exposing that which was taught. For example in chapter 3 I believe we worked on very basic addition. Every new section of the book would introduce it again and raise the bar a bit so it got just a bit harder. So through out the summer we worked on basic addition a few days rather than just a few when you got to that section. And it was like that for every concept he learned. Always bringing it back up later so it was not forgotten and took to a bit higher level in difficulty.Let me tell you what he thought of the book.He at first HATED it ! He said it was not fair I was giving him home work on his summer vacation. He wanted to watch cartoons and play video games. I would however give him much praise when he did well and especially when he grasped a concept that was difficult for him. He began to like doing the book because he enjoyed the time we spent together and of course his great job hugs I would give him! He loved showing his grandparents what he learned and they were truly impressed! He absolutely loved the games and any of the problems in the book that had the robot in it! He would come in the morning with a smile on his face and say lets gets started! I loved that ! :)My three important suggestions to consider if you but this book.Buy your child a watch that it is not digital with all the numbers on it. For my child the telling time part time was very hard for him and this helped a lot. Make a point through out the day and night to ask them what time it is!Second let them handle money and help in the stores how to use cash. It will make the book make much more sense and stress the importance of this skill. I want to WARN every one in this book the nickles almost look identical to the quarters. I had to put my reading glasses on several times to tell the difference. This is my only issue with the book!Third is I get up very early and he was just not enough wake to be as attentive and alert and focused as he needed to be. I found if I gave him some time to wake up and what not he did much better and remembered quite well.I will definitely be getting more books for this summer and would highly recommend this book if your child is struggling in school currently! I got some other brand books for reading and writing and I GREATLY REGRET not getting the Sylvan brand, He is currently struggling with with reading and writing but is straight easy A's on math!I hope this helps ! ray333ray2001@yahoo.com

I bought this book for summer use, to build confidence before 2nd grade. My daughter loved it. So much of math is repetitive. This book teaches thinking, and concepts. It is great to use, alongside traditional math education. My daughters face lit up when she realized she was doing multiplication and division, essentially, by grouping. Love it! Going to by the 3rd grade one next.My mother, who taught education for 45 years, said we should teach thinking, if we do this sort of thing at home. Schools teach theory. She loves this book.

I bought this for my son to use during the summer between first and second grade. I liked that it included all of the topics he'd learned in first grade, so it provided a good review. It also featured enough content on each topic to really refresh his memory, and the difficulty of each topic was staged such that we could start with super easy material and work into the concepts presented at the level of difficulty he'd been dealing with while in school. There were a number of exercises, which I guess were intended to keep things interesting, but just came across as silly a seven year old boy. We opted to skip those and still had plenty of worksheets to keep us busy for the last month or so of summer when gearing up for the start of the next school year.

This book is in 3 parts, so we worked through all 3 sections at once, doing a page from each section every day. If a page was a little too challenging for my son, we would skip it and come back to it later in the school year. He has learned so much! I'm getting the next grade up for him for next year. It's a little thing, but the pictures are so colorful and fun, as well as up to date with what he's into. Anything to make math more relate-able is a bonus!

We used this book for our home school math and it was quick and easy, well put together curriculum. Quick shipping and well packaged.

It has lots of pictures and color, and does not try to over complicate the math problems.

Many women question God's wisdom in not answering their prayers for a child.Saake explains to women that God answers prayers in many different ways, and that no prayer goes unanswered.Women at any stage of the infertility process could benefit from this book. I don't know if I'll ever have children. This book has given me the gift of seeking and finding the Lord's peace in the midst of my hurt and suffering. What seems so easy for other women seems like a mountain to me. The mountain is bitterness. This book has helped me feel more at peace because I have sought Jesus as a result. The author has experienced all three, and weaves the story of Hannah in with her own journey. I have never read a book that I could relate to so much. And if you are the "burden bearer" for someone who is suffering, each chapter has a special section for those who are supporting someone in these trials. It has brought me so much comfort, I can't recommend this book enough.

Since we began this new leg in our journey, I've been reading everything infertility related that I can get my hands on. The first full length book I've read dedicated exclusively to this subject is Hannah's Hope: Seeking God's Heart In The Midst Of Infertility.Hannah's Hope is written by Jennifer Saake, mother to two living children. She and her husband have walked the road of infertility for 15 years and they have had their hearts broken by several miscarriages and even more failed adoptions. The book is appropriate for women at any stage of infertility, though she writes mostly for a general audience and less for specific problems within infertility.The structure of each chapter of Ms. Saake's book is a passage (usually a single verse) of scripture, a historical fiction retelling of Hannah's story (the mother of Samuel), Ms. Saake's writings on the subject of the chapter, probing questions on the subject at hand, a list of scriptures for meditation, and a passage (never more than a page) written to the loved ones of people struggling with infertility, designed to give the loved ones special insights and ways to support their friend or family member.One thing I appreciate about Ms. Saake's book is her conversational tone. The book is a very easy read, and Ms. Saake's pen flows as easily and comfortably as I imagine her tongue would if she were sitting with you having a cup of coffee. Throughout the reading, I felt as if I were sitting across the table from a friend as she shared some of her innermost thoughts. This put me at ease to explore my own thoughts, agreeing with her in most cases, disagreeing with her in others, and overall deepening my intentional thoughts on our own journey.The historical fiction retelling of Hannah's story from I Samuel 1 is designed to explore the thoughts Hannah (and occasionally some of the other main characters) may have had as she grieved her way through her own infertility journey. Through the process, the reader develops a kinship with the biblical heroine, taking comfort in the fact that though she lived thousands of years ago, her struggle was largely the same as that of a woman today and is not unknown to the heart of God.As Ms. Saake divulges her own history and feelings, the reader is taken on a journey through exploring anger, jealousy, fear, bitterness, grief, disappointment, stress, hope, and intimacy with the Almighty. She tackles issues from fear, to bioethics, to the strength of the marital relationship, and most importantly, the infertile couple's walk with God. She is sensitive and gentle while still bold with her convictions.There is no false piety at all in Ms. Saake. Everything is brutally honest yet still respectful of the sovereignty of God. On more than one occasion, I felt like I was reading my own thoughts simply penned by Ms. Saake's hand. There was comfort and validation in "aha! someone else has felt this way too!"Ms. Saake does not dwell in the depths of her feelings. She provides thoughtful scriptural encouragement while at the same time refraining from giving pat answers and comfort cliches. She adds her own thoughts and insights as revealed to her through meditation and experience.My favorite passage in the book reads: She [the woman at the well] sought happiness in the arms of men. Jesus provides peace that could be found in none other than Himself. I sought joy in the new life of a baby. Jesus offers New life in Himself. I wanted to know the feeling of carrying another soul inside my body. He provides the Holy Spirit to indwell me. I longed to nurse a child. Paul wrote, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good" (1 Peter 2:2-3). I dreamed of watching my baby grow and mature. But am I ever-growing in Christ? "Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:13-14). I bemoaned the "bread of adversity" I felt unfairly called to taste. The Lord answers with the cross: "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19). I pleaded for a child to enrich my days on earth. He commands, "But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:20-21). p 95Ms. Saake does not promise anyone a happy ending. She admits that even though she now has two living, biological children, the scars of infertility will always leave an ache in her heart. The journey God has taken her on through this process has not been completed or nullified by the successful conception and birth of children. I would guess that this would be of special comfort to those either struggling with secondary infertility or who still feel a loss that their family is not what they imagined or hoped it would be.She exhorts the reader, While Satan imprisons some with bondage to past sins, he can entangle others in what seems to be a good and righteous goal, causing them to lose sight of God in the midst of self-evaluation. p 49That hit me as especially poignant because I've been stewing so much about this lately that I need to guard my own heart against making motherhood my idol. That is an important challenge for every mother, mother to be, or mother at heart.I found some of the "Burden Bearer" passages (written to friends and family members of infertile couples) to be helpful, and others were not of particular significance to me. I appreciated her frankness with her advice of how to support, and in some cases, how to refrain from causing more hurt, on infertile loved ones. One thing that should be noted is that the passages are to be read in conjunction with the rest of the book and are not intended to be read independently.My primary critique of the book is that each chapter is very brief. Just when I thought "ok, we're tackling something I'm really struggling with," Ms. Saake moves on to another subject. I longed for her to exegete the scriptural passages she offered and share more details on the HOWS of her journey and the conclusions she's made. I don't think that this is a flaw, per say, because I don't think it was ever the author's intent to give an exhaustive chronicle of infertility and so I cannot blame her for not writing as if it were. This was simply was more of a disappointment--I longed to delve deeper with my new found friend in to emotions that are for me, still raw and in need of exploration. The approach is just a matter of personal preference and I'm sure for as many as there are of women like me who longed for more depth, there are equally many women who appreciated the brevity.However, the ease of the flow of the book makes this a very excellent, easily accessible and processed resource for pastors, ministerial staff and anyone else truly interested in learning an "insider's perspective" on infertility. One of my very favorite chapters in the book was on how the church could help break its own silence on this matter and offer comfort to those in their congregations who are burdened with this grief. I only wish it were longer!Overall, my impression of the book is very positive. I would heartily recommend it to anyone at any stage in their infertility journey. I also recommend it as a must-have resource for any pastor. I do recommend it for loved ones of the infertile, with the disclaimer that this book is not written specifically to give you (the loved one) advice, and reading it should be done with the intention of understanding the heart of your infertile friend or family member, and not specifically equipping with you with the "how tos" of what to do as the friend (though there is some).Brava, Jennifer! A valiant, sincere, and godly effort that is very much appreciated.

I found this book after 3 harsh years of infertility in our marriage. God still hasn't given us kids since then, but this book has been invaluable in helping me uncover many perspectives in me that have stood in the way of true peace, faith, and comfort. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who faces infertility or who have family members who do so. Jennifer writes from her own heartaches but also, more importantly, from the Word of God.

My husband and I endured a period of failed fertility treatments before we decided to adopt internationally (Kazakhstan). After loving and losing two baby boys we bonded with our third baby boy and our adoption was granted in court! It was joyous! But we were blindsided when the birthmother appealed the adoption on the last day of the fifteen day waiting/appeal period. We are still fighting this out in court. This book was just what I need while enduring this fight. I struggle to remain faithful in God's plan. There are so many questions unanswered - "Why is God allowing this to happen to us???" Saake's book is the only one I have found that addresses the questions so many of us struggling to grow our families have regarding our faith. This book does not just address fertility, but miscarriage and adoption struggles as well. I HIGHLY recommend this book! It is also ideal for family and friends of those struggling with fertility or loss of a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or failed adoption. Every chapter has a section titled "Burden Bearer" designed just for those people looking in from the outside and wanting to support their friends and loved ones without putting their foot in their mouth! About the Author

BOB BEDORE has been doing theater for the past 24 years, has toured as a stand-up comedian, hosted a live Saturday morning kids show, spent a dozen years as a radio disc jockey, appeared in movies, and has owned and operated several theaters. He has also written 20 plays and a few screenplays. In 1994 Bob founded an improv comedy troupe, Quick Wits. Since then he has performed with the Wits almost every show (somewhere around 2500 so far) in front of very enthusiastic crowds. He has taken improv to the classroom where he has taught all ages, from kindergarten to college. He lives in West Jordan, Utah.

I taught an improv class for the first time to high school age students and this book was indispensable. The lists of games work for all ages and it provided my students with many choices each day.

I would have bought a different book, but this one has a good set of starter improv exercises, so I can use it with children.

This has some great suggestions for how to implement improv in the classroom, and it lists some great games. Some of the games and the way they are written were difficult to understand.

Use this book with older students and they enjoy the activities.

I teach sales management at the university and wanted to incorporate more improv activities into our class to help my students improve their communication skills. This book was very helpful, and the students enjoyed many of the activities I pulled from it.
