Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Beatriz Williams; I have read all of her books, and the most recent one is always my new favorite. The Summer Wives did not disappoint...it's my new favorite! I think what I enjoy most about the writing is the conversational tone. I almost feel like I'm there and a part of it. This book had everything I enjoy in a book...a little mystery, a little romance, great storytelling, and an ending that kept me on the edge of my seat! No spoilers here, but I had suspected something about Miranda and was so happy I was right!

This is a beautifully written story. I loved the richly drawn characters especially Miranda. She's a newcomer to the Island. It's here that she learns about love and life. The Islanders and the Summer people each follow their own set if rules. I was fascinated by the ridged structure of Society here. Winthrop Island is beautiful but it's secrets are ugly. The murder of Hugh Fisher is a case in point. Joseph Vargo was convicted of the crime but Miranda knew he couldn't kill anyone. I was enthralled by her. She's a fighter. She won't be stopped until she succeeds. Her story is entwined with that of her stepsister, Isobel. They are completely different personalities. Beatriz Williams wrote a wonderful story. I was drawn in and I couldn't put the book down. The ending was sweet and touching. It left me wanting more. The Summer Wives is a must read.

While this may not win an influential literary prize, this book by Beatriz Williams is incredibly entertaining and will likely keep you up reading well past your bedtime. Beautifully written and brilliantly plotted, this is one of those books that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.This is the story of two very different women—Bianca and Miranda—told over the summer months of three years: 1930, 1951 and 1969. This may sound overly complex, but it is an ingenious and creative way to tell this page-turning story that is not only narratively compelling, but also emotionally searing. The action takes place on Winthrop Island, an exclusive summer enclave for the very wealthy in the Long Island Sound area. There is a natural conflict—usually quite trifling, but sometimes quite dangerous—between the monied families and the year-round islanders who serve them. The book has it all: love, romance, seduction, secrets galore, murder and lots of suspense.Written like an intelligent and exciting soap opera, it will totally consume you. Yes, dinner will be late tonight!

I've made it to 68% somehow, but I haven't really enjoyed it for a few reasons but the main one being I find the jumping between time periods very confusing, esp when you have different generations of characters from the same locale and families doing similar behavior in the different time periods. I am not going to force myself to read anymore, period.

You can't believe the hype of reviews and you can't trust first impressions(sampling). This just wasn't my kind of book. It had a confusing mess of characters and jumped back and forth in time. I didn't get a feel of the class distinctions and I never grew to care about any of the characters. This book was mostly a formulated love story.

I don't believe reviews, for the most part. Often, the really highly rated ones are written by friends of the sellers! I got this book because I saw it on a recommended list somewhere. When I first picked it up, I was TOTALLY confused for the first few chapters because there were too many characters. I liked the writing style, so I started to take notes on the different dates & who was who. By the time I got about 1/3 of the way into the book, I couldn't put it down. I was guessing about the mysteries in it, and the writing style was really great (I'm a former English teacher). When I finished it, I was quite sad, because I was so entranced with the entire story!!!! Love this book, and passing it to my pals.

The story was okay although so transparent. It really made the plot drag especially where a main character learns something shocking to them when it was so apparent from the beginning that that was where the story was headed. The ending just drifted off

I love Beatriz Williams! I've read every book she's written and love them all!This was no different. I love the setting, the time period, the characters, the mystery, etc. I did get a little confused at times on who was who. I went back and re-read parts. In the end it all becomes clear. A list of characters would be helpful to me...I loved the intensity of the Coast Guard scene with Joseph.I look forward to more books from Ms. Willams!! I pre-order them the moment I hear about them!

Title: Creating Community: 5 Keys to Building a Small Group Culture by Andy Stanley and Bill WillitsPages: 190How it was obtained: I was given this book before I started leading a small group at a church in Columbia, SC. Obviously I didn't read it when I was supposed to read it.Time spent on the "to read" shelf: 4 years.Days spent reading it: 2 months.Why I read it: I was supposed to read it before I helped lead a small group. I felt bad about never having read it, so I added it to this list and completed my assignment years after it was originally given.Brief review: This book is a Northpoint Church resource that talks about how they created a small group environment at their church. I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I recognize how important community is in spiritual development. So I think there are a few helpful pointers in this book about how that is accomplished.But for the most part, this book really rehashes old business models and applies them to small groups. For instance one point of the book is "Clarify the win." Make sure you know what your end goal is. Gee, that sounds like Business class 101 to me. We need to know our goal to get there. I get it. Another section was about having reasonable criteria for small group leaders. Have quality leaders, but don't expect them to be perfect. Done.In another section of the book they talk about how they want to see their small groups multiplying. SO every 1.5 years the group splits, but also grows. The chart goes:Year/# of people0/121.5/243/484/96etc. etc.However they never explain how these groups magically grow (especially considering they are CLOSED groups). It was like they were saying:Step 1. Start small group.Step 2. Double in size in a year and a half.Step 3. Start new small group.It reminds me of the only episode I ever saw of Southpark with these underwear gnomes whose motto was: Phase 1--Steal underwear. Phase 2-- Phase 3--Profit!How do you do that? How do you double the small group size? I realize a church like Northpoint has new people coming and going all the time. But the old "if you build it they will come" mentality does not work for small groups in most churches, making this point practically worthless for those churches.And one more personal pet peeve. Andy Stanley's name is prominently on the front cover, but I would be shocked if he wrote anything besides the introduction that is about 5 pages long. If you write a book, put your name on the cover. If you write the intro you're not the author! You're the "With intro written by" guy. His name is on the cover because it is his church and it will help sell this book. That's annoying to me. We might as well grab John Grisham, make him write an intro and put his name on the front cover of any book we want to sell. Why not? Ok, enough ranting.So I did enjoy some of what is in this book. The opening chapters deal a lot with why people need a community they can fit into. There is a profound need in the human soul that needs community, and I think this book explores that need well. It gives us a glimpse of a biblical theology for small groups.There are a number of small points that are applicable to anyone working on developing or strengthening their small groups. But this is not a book about how to start, grow, and develop your small groups. It is a big picture book that is not particularly practical for smaller churches, in my opinion. Not that the ideas are bad or wrong, they just are not for general application. I was hoping for something more and simply did not get it. Good thing this book was reasonably short.Favorite quote: "Disconnected people tend to be more selfish. Isolation breeds selfishness."Stars: 2 out of 5Final Word: Disappointing.

About two months ago, I began the adventure of coordinating the small groups ministry at my church. I've been in small groups, I lead a small group with my wife, but outside of student ministries, I had never really coordinating a program like this before. I feel overwhelmed that I simply don't know enough or have enough experience. So I asked all my smarter, more experienced friends to tell me what they've read that can help me lay a good foundation for helping coordinate this really crucial ministry. A few of them mentioned Creating Community, and so I bought it for my e-reader. It was so good, it took me less than 24 hours to read. "We want them to grow in their intimacy with God, community with insiders, and influence with outsiders."For a while now, I have had a burden for a more intentional system for our small groups. We've had this system of scattered and dis-unified small groups for a while now, and there isn't a lot of clear direction. I feel just like Andy Stanley did early on in North Point's history. "We all sensed a need to bring a layer of structure and intentionality to our otherwise random and unstructured friendships" (pg. 12).The book is written primarily by Bill Willits, who is the director of the small groups at North Point Community Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He talks a lot about how they arrived at how they do groups now and how they thought strategically about how to grow it into a system that moves people toward a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other. This combination of real-life scenario and theoretical practice is extremely insightful and challenging.Creating Community is orderly, succinct and thorough; a combination you don't find in many "how-to-ministry" books. It has challenged many of my preconceived notions of what community looks like in the church and how to best foster really meaningful relationships in those communities. If your heart is to help create communities that create real life change in people, than Creating Community is simply a must-read.

This is a wonderful book about creating a community, and not necessarily in church. It's so easy to just go to church and follow the motions without ever REALLY becoming connected. Creating a community inside the church is what God intended for us to do. In order to work together effectively, you need to know that you can rely on your church family and be able to trust and confide in them. It takes work; it's not something that just happens. This book leads you deeper on how to allow that to happen. My husband purchased this book when we were hosting small groups at our house and we had the best session that we'd ever had (and we hosted groups for SEVERAL sessions prior to this). People opened up and told their testimonies and it was because there are tips on how to break the ice and make it easier to open up. No one wants to open up and become vulnerable in a group of people they don't really know, but it's almost necessary. We highly recommend this book if you currently lead, are thinking about leading or are starting to put small groups together. Like many amateur photographers, I already have quite a few books about photography. It seems that I keep trying to find one that will -really- make a difference, a book that does more than show photographic images I might aspire to and giving some good information about taking photos in various situations. But what I really want at this point is a book that would go into the specifics of taking good photos--with examples--a book that would show me how to control MY camera (and improve my "vision") so that I could take photos I really liked and use the kind of composition and the kind of settings that would make them turn out well.This book really does do all this and more, just as you'd hope a 300 large format book from Popular Photography magazine would.The first section is, logically, "The Basics of Photography" with short chapters on Composition, Color & Tonality, Exposure (very good explanation of Aperture, Shutter and ISO and how they work together--essential reading!), Lenses, Lighting, and Editing Software (just a bit about the latter).This section was so useful. Even when it covered things I've read about many times before (the Golden Mean, Rule of Thirds, the Exposure triangle, etc.), it was very clear and easy to remember. Best of all, the approach of this book is ALL about discussing specific photos and seeing the concepts in terms of real life photographic challenges.There are photographs on nearly every page of this book--full color, often quite large. Although it's $30, it is hardcover, a large format, and with so many photos that I really felt it was a very good value. The authors illustrate the concepts and show what NOT to do as well as what will work (as in exposure, showing over- and under- of the same image for comparison with the same subject well-exposed.)But it's the second part of the book--the part that already begins on page 31--that really wowed me. The next 250 pages is all about your most likely "Photography Subjects", with very specific advice for photographing them (and, still, with lots of photos as examples).There are 43 different topics in this section, including such familiar ones as Travel, Landscapes, Florals, Animals, Weddings, Portraits, and Photojournalism. But the book also covers many specialized "niche" photo subjects like Cars, Conventions, Nudes, Concerts, Fireworks, Night Sky, Weather, Underwater, Sports, Family and Friends, Street Photography, Architecture, Sunsets, etc.The great part of these section showing 43 different kinds of subjects to photograph is that each chapter follows the same basic organizational format: "Getting Started", with an overview of how to prepare for that particular subject, then specific ideas about "What to Shoot"/what to look for, and suggested "Gear", including lenses, filters, flash and tripod--if any of these are necessary for this particular kind of shoot.But the best part of each section for me was in the beginning of each chapter, the "Tech Tips". This was a sidebar with specific advice for things like Exposure (what ISO, shutter speed and aperture are usually recommended), Focus, White Balance, Shooting Mode and Metering choices. For me, this was invaluable. Even if I didn't duplicate it exactly (this book is written with a DSLR in mind so you have to think of your own camera if, like me, you have a compact, and make changes accordingly--for example, compacts aren't going to be using apertures over f8 and, at least for my camera, rarely over f5.6. But the basic ideas of what to do for "shallow" v. "deep DOF" are still the same). Even if you have a compact, this is always a helpful guide.For example, the Tech Tips for the "Wedding" section brings attention to the problem of underexposing white dresses--how to get it to photograph white, not gray, and how to not lose all the detail (some advice: shoot RAW, use the histogram, try Spot metering and then bump exposure...those kind of things.) Focus is another topic that often shows up in Tech Tips, including in this section, the recommendation for when to use single point Auto focus and when to use tracking focus for wedding pictures. Likewise, this section gets you thinking about whether you want shallow or deep depth of field for various kinds of shots before you even pick up the camera and reminds us about action and shutter speed choices.)When you imagine this kind of advice and specific settings recommendations applied to all those 43 topics, you can see why I feel this book is invaluable.

Pretty good book on photography with a lot of helpful hints. Only problem is that the version of print I received has a few pages like the attached photo and are not legible (seems that the page was copied a handful of times on top of itself so you have to REALLY stare at it for a bit to be able to tell what the words are). Unfortunately, those pages are the pages I needed the most.

Bought my wife a new DSLR for Christmas and packaged this book with it. Information is great. She is still new to photography and I catch her referring to this book for help on certain shots. Money WELL spent and the pictures are very good in the book!

For beginners or midrange photographers, this book has excellent teaching information. I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn the art!

This is a gorgeously illustrated book which is more suitable for intermediate photographers. I am looking for a book with instructions on the basics of photography as I am just beginning photography so it does not suit me.

Great tips on all types of photography. Best used in conjunction with individual or group classes/instruction. But still one of the best how-to books I've read.

I would highly recommend this book! It identifies MANY very specific situations and how to photograph them, with plenty of examples!

If you are unsure of how to photograph things this is a great book for beginners. It shows you photos and then explains the settings used to capture it.

Historian Larry E. Morris received a master's in American literature from BYU. He authored The Fate of the Corps: What Became of the Lewis and Clark Explorers After the Expedition, named a Top Academic Title by Choice, and coauthored (with Ronald M. Anglin) The Mystery of John Colter: The Man Who Discovered Yellowstone. It brought back years of memories of staying each summer with my grandparents in West Yellowstone. We fished every year on the Madison and had been in the exact quake area the day of the earthquake.. we left late that afternoon... later feeling the shaking as we drive home to Utah not knowing until later if the destruction just behind us. My mother was frantic upon hearing of the quake as she knew we were fishing in that area and didn't know we had driven out just before the quake hit. We returned the next summer, July 1960 and stood at memorial rock and hardly recognized the area we had so often visited.Thank you for the tribute to do many.Diane Moss

Mostly just a review of peoples names. Not very informative about the physical causes, etc. I read it because we had camped there in previous years, and had camped there earlier that summer.

Don't do what I did--buy it on impulse because I'd visited Yellowstone National Park. First, download the sample--it will give you a good idea of what the rest of the book is like. Then read the Wikipedia article, "1959 Hebgen Lake Earthquake," to get it clear in your mind what event the book is about. Hebgen Lake, and Earthquake Lake which was formed in 1959, are actually outside of Yellowstone National Park.This reads like a collection of good local newspaper stories. It opens with a human interest story, and I expected it to move on to other things, but it didn't. The book has a sameness from beginning to end. It is a series of stories about families that were camping, heard a noise, cars overturned, damaged by trees or boulders falling on them or inundated by water, injuries, families separated and reunited... and many pictures of damaged roads.It would probably be fascinating if you'd lived anywhere nearby in 1959, or had been through it.Regrettably, as a guy from the East Coast who merely visited Yellowstone National Park as a tourist last year, I just didn't find it very interesting. It's well-written as far as it goes, and it is callous of me not to be interested in the disaster experiences of families, but... I'm not.This is not like a Simon Winchester book. There is virtually nothing in it about geology, and very little about its effect on Yellowstone National park in general.When we were visiting Yellowstone, there were many signs calling attention to things that been changed--once-impressive geothermal features now dormant, once-dormant features now active. I didn't pay much attention to the years, nor did I do my homework before buying this book, or I'd have realized that the changes they were talking about were probably the effects of earthquakes in 1994 and 2004, not 1959.

Very interesting. I was in west Yellowstone Montanta in the National Park when the quake hit in 1959. My father was a ranger at the west entrance to Yellowstone Nat. Park. I remember all the after shocks and the quake and the military choppers flying in and out of the airport. The town sustained some damage and so did the park and the cabins the rangers lived in. This book shows the struggle for those closest to the quake.

This was a step back in time to camping before all the luxuries of cell phones and wifi. It was an interesting and quick read, with great photos that show us what the times were like. The logistics of getting the wounded out of the valley when roads were blocked, and getting help to those who had no means of letting others know where they were show us how much disaster relief and rescue assistance has improved in recent years. A great read.

Mr. Morris' account of the 1959 Yellowstone earthquake was absolutely fascinating. He pulls together the events of that night using official records, and newspaper and eye-witness accounts. I have passed through and visited the slide area several time over the years, but never had a full understanding of what really happened that nigh. Mr. Morris' book filled in the gaps in my knowledge. It is a quick read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has visited or is planning to visit the Yellowstone area.

I had never heard of the great Yellowstone Earthquake, so this was an eye opener. Absolutely a riveting read. It may help to prepare you for a disaster if and when one ever hits your area and life. The 'real' people in this true to life account can teach us all how to react and help each other.This is not a dry boring book, you definitely can't wait to pick it up and keep reading.

I read this book breathlessly in one day! I could not put it down. It was a roller coaster ride of information that gave me the "feel" of the chaos these people went through, in that one terror-filled night and the days and weeks afterward.
