"Each act of penance we offer, each sacramental confession, every little sacrifice conforms us ever more to God's image, makes our lives more resemble the divine life." Hahn's newest book is a defense of the Catholic sacrament of reconciliation (which he always calls by its older names of confession or penance) as well as a source of practical instructions for those unaccustomed to confessing. It is not surprising that his books sell briskly. A great book on the Sacrament of Confession. We need it. The Lord initiated it. The Church provides it. While I have always been a Catholic who believes in the power of this sacrament, I benefited from Hahn's exposition of the power and importance of the Church's role in forgiveness. The reiteration of our Catholic belief in both venial and mortal sin is a well done, and easy for the potential convert to understand.I have always loved Hahn's books and this one is no different. Every parish library should have it. Every Catholic should be made to read it. In the words of Fr. John Zuhlsdorf: "Go to Confession!"

Preparing for the Lenten Penance service, I read my copy of "Lord Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession. Scott Hahn, a convert himself to Catholicism, and now a Professor at St. Francis University, Steubenville, Ohio, and President of St. Paul Center for Theological Studies, has done it again. He is a very inspired, and well educated professor who takes delight in digging into the roots of the Church and finding the earliest references to this most important Sacrament of the Church. Going all the way back to the Book of Genesis and coming forward through the Bible to where Jesus institutes the sacrament with his apostles to forgive sins, "Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, and whose sins you loose, they are loosed in Heaven." Scott Hahn teaches how the Jewish faith involved the cleansing and purification of oneself before going into the temple, and how in the Book of Leviticus laws were to be formed, and all these Old Testamentreferences come not to be replaced, but fulfilled in the sacrament of penance. An examination of conscience Appendix provides one with examination of our lives based on the Ten Commandments, and Prayers that can be said.It all made sense when in our penance service this sacrament was depicted as a large umbrella, purple for the color of Lent, underneathon one side was a word - Confession, which was the telling of our sins to another, in this case, a Priest who is given the authority through the Church, established by Christ. This act helps us voice our sins and seek council and is like emptying the soul of them. On the other side, was a word Penance. Penance is any act that is a way to reverse what was done by prayer, reading scripture, offering ourselves in asking forgiveness, and even reconciling with those whom we offended in necessary. Above the umbrella is a large word Reconciliation.This is what the sacrament is in a nutshell. We confess our sins, admitting we have sinned (and every live human being is a sinner), we come to Christ in the sacrament and are forgiven our sins, and given a penance (token prayer, or reading to pray for forgiveness and thanking God for His forgiveness), and we are reconciled with God after we reconcile ourselves with those we offended if we can do so.This book is easy to read, and I even went and marked the pages where biblical references were made to follow the flow of the development of this sacrament. It all makes sense and thanks to Scott's wonderful and easy to follow style of writing, I learned even more than I grew up with over 72 years. I highly recommend this book for any one Catholic or non-Catholic to read and see what this scholar, and theologian, has found in his personal study to help us in our prayer in time of problems, "Lord, Have Mercy." When entering the church, I was so totally prepared for confession that my confessor was just surprised. I have read but two chapters. I am finding the material to be very germane to this Lenten season. Scott Hahn writes in a way which is thought provoking without being preachy. Scott Hahn's writing is such that there is layer after layer of well stated levels of meanings or depth of thought to each chapter. There is a coordinating series on EWTN, the Catholic TV station. Both the book and the EWTN series are well worth the effort needed to study.

Really enjoy Scott Hahns writing. I am an adult convert to catholicism so my education is lacking. I really enjoy his books because they explain the important details in ways that make it easy to understand. He also is very passionate about the relationship with Jesus and it shows in his writing.

Confession sets our relationship right with God, which extends to our relationship with others. A right relationship with God transforms our soul so that we can cooperate with grace to live the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Scott Hahn has wowed me again! I am a convert to the Church, was brought in this past Easter 2015. I started watching Lord Have Mercy on EWTN, and I just had to get the book, and I am glad I did. Scott Hahn has helped me gain a very deeper and strong love for the Sacrament of Penance!

As all of Scott's writings, a very good read and even better in hard bound edition.

I grew up on the Beastie Boys first album, License to Ill. It was just great! I knew every song front to back. Having the large folded album cover to reveal a crashed plane tells you a little something about what you will get. I was young and so my comparison to other music was not much. But I knew I liked it! As a kid, it was more about learning the lyrics and seeing if you can keep up singing along. It was quite fun!As I matured, so did their music. Later we got So Wha'cha Want, Sabotage, and Intergalactic as their highlights. They only produced eight albums, but each one was surprisingly unique from the one prior. But, for me, I rarely follow musicians personal lives and dont pay attention to much else besides when I either buy an album or its on the radio.As with the Beastie Boys, while I did not buy every one of their albums or follow their personal lives beyond their music, I was surprised when I heard of Adam Yauch's death. Seemed so soon. And the opening story by Mike D reminded me of this fact and how impactful he was on their lives, personally and musically. Most of the book are reminiscing by the remaining two Beastie Boys, Mike D and Ad-Rock, telling their stories through each album and other incidents that may or may not have been controversial at the time. Some of the photos in the book I can even recall from back in my youth, seeing them in music mags or newspapers, wondering what exactly what happened.The book is filled evenly with pictures and stories. At 550 pages, you are getting the full gamut here, and from the horses mouth. The book is well designed that is funny, heartfelt and inspiring. It is less of a biography of a band and more of a culture. Some are anecdotal. Some are things strictly from their memory. Other things culled from events known to everyone. All within the changing climate of the early 80's with rap on the rise and punk rock on the decline. And these guys are the spawn of that zeitgeist. Overall, this is a perfect book and to revisit Beastie Boys in this way gives them substance as both musicians and creative and intelligent people.

Buy, steal, beg for, or borrow this book. I'm not going to get into my level of Beastie Boys fandom, because that belongs to me, and it be impossible to explain the importance and impact of the Beastie Boys have had on my life. They've been the soundtrack to my life, the good and the bad. Some of my fondest memories involve going to see them live, or having Paul's Boutique on in the background while something memorable is happening. It's difficult to put into words, though. Seriously. I am who I am (a divorced 44 year old dad of two) today because of them. One of the standout memories of my childhood was, at 11 years old, taking the bus to the next town over, and going to the record store. Inside, they were playing 'Licensed to Ill', and I'll never forget that moment. It changed my life.From what I've read so far, AdRock's chapter on cassette tapes really hit home. It's....perfect. Nostalgia personified, and he absolutely nails it - how ridiculous a method it was to record/playback music, etc., yet how critical cassette tapes were to us as kids, and how their existence and meaning shaped who we became today.To AdRock and Mike D.: A million thank-yous! I know you understand the impact you've had on multiple generations, around the world, and that's something that will live forever. Even now, 30+ years later, me and my kids belt out Beastie Boys tunes while driving around, and it's so much fun! It's truly something special, the impact and importance the Beasties had, and still have, and all I can say is: THANK YOU! For those reading, go get this book. Sure, it weighs over 3 lbs. and as thick as a college textbook (or Bible, even), but man, is it essential reading.

UPDATE: I take back my disappointment with Amazon. They refunded my $5.00 extra I had paid when I pre-ordered it without me even asking. Good job Amazon.“And you know he weighs in pretty hefty…”Hefty is a perfect word for this book. More Chicago style pizza than NY.I’ve not read the book except a few pages I’ve skimmed since I got it a couple of hours ago. So my review is on the Book structure and printing…and unfortunately Amazon’s declining care of products it sells.The Book. As said above it’s huge. Not tall or wide but thick. “Ah, like a thick-ass book that's filled with wack rhymes”. Unlike most biographies where there are about 20 pages in the middle devoted to photos, this book has the photos and illustrations are throughout it’s entirety. It resembles a Fanzine more than a book. Plus there are tons of little extras throughout that only Beastie Fans will appreciate.The binding is quality and seems like it will stand the test of time. From what I can tell it has smyth sewn binding which make it lay fairly flat when opened on a table. This is nice because you can actually see the middle parts of this gigantic book.The paper and printing are quality as well. The paper is a non-coated stock (matte) which allows the ink to absorb into the page creating rich deep colors in the photographs. Plus the paper has a nice nostalgic smell. There are a few glossy sections but only used when appropriate, or to break up the pace of the book.Now onto the Amazon not so Prime deal I got on this book. Note: This is just me being picky. But needs to be noted in case others got the same damage on their book and paid more for it. I pre-ordered my book months ago for $35 through Amazon Prime. I now see it’s $30. “Knucklehead deli tried to gyp me on the price” I get it, prices change blah blah blah. I wouldn’t be so upset except that although my book was on my doorstep at 8am this morning which was sofa king Rad to wake up to, it is damage. The top right corner all the way through the pages to the back cover (see photos). I’ve tried to mend it myself the best I can. I’ll probably keep because it’s a waste of natural resources to ship this back because of a bent corner. I know I sound like I’m being silly about this but when it’s delivered damaged (no way this happened in shipping, the box was in perfect shape) and then you see that you could have waited and saved $5…it just gets under the skin.Anyways, if you love the Beasties and have been with them since the 80s like me, or even if you are a newer fan of this millennium…get this book. R.I.P. MCA.

The great thing about this series, is that you want each woman to succeed, and you feel her pain. You can appreciate the view point of each woman, even though they ultimately were against each other, as you read "her" story, you want her to triumph. As you move thru the series you chapmion for the character who you are reading about. It really shows that there are always 2 sides to every story!

Didn't matter to me that it is for "young readers". I totally enjoyed it!

As with all books written by professionals, it is hughley overpriced. The book does contain valuable information for the trade.

Students can learn more about Stormwater Management especially if they don't have a mathematical background. I have enjoyed reading it thus far.
