I know because I was there at the time. I was a Tactical Patrol Force (TPF) cop and later worked as a narcotics detective in the 41st Precinct. Some of my biggest arrests were made in the 41. In 1971, I had been promoted to sergeant and was assigned as a TPF Squad leader working the South Bronx, specifically in the 41st Precinct known as Fort Apache. The TPF was there to back-up the 41 Precinct officers who were being overwhelmed by the non-stop violence and street crime and riots in that area.As I read through Ralph Friedman’s Street Warrior I couldn’t help but relate to his bravery compassion and dedication that he revealed as he told his of his exploits. This book grabbed me within the first couple of pages. Having started in Law Enforcement in a different major city about 8 years after Ralph Friedman, I found myself nodding and cheering him on as he discussed the mindset, processes and beliefs that officers operated under back in the day. This book caused me to do a lot of reflecting on the "good old days," as well as regretting that I never had the opportunity to work a tour with Friedman. Friedman doesn't attempt to gloss over mistakes he made, he puts them out front for all to read. He blends his personal and professional experiences with humor and solid action to keep the reader turning the pages; and when arriving at the end of the book, wishing for more. New York City lost a true hero and great cop when Friedman had to retire; but fortunately he was able to turn that inner drive and passion towards his friend and future wife. Don't pass this book up, you'll regret it if you do.

He was involved in numerous shootouts and arrests both on and off-duty. They say a Police Officer is on duty 24 hrs. a day and Ralph Friedman truly was. From stories of his numerous arrests, the shooting of his Transit Authority brother and the mugging of his Mother, you will feel as if you are there. As stated often by the author, his career took place when there were not handcuffs on law enforcement and they could proactively pursue criminals and have the backing of the Politicians, Police Brass and the public. Criminals were afraid of Officer Friedman and as you read his story you will know why. Law enforcement needs more like him. Recommended.
