These stories are interconnected by a core set of characters who don't get anywhere by mainstream standards, but don't get overwhelmed by their lack of success because they didn't expect much to begin with. This leaves the reader with an uneasy sense of optimism that arises from the narrative's suspension of conventional norms about how to communicate or interact with others. Couldn't anything be possible when there are no apparent guidelines about how to live a life? Even some of the supernatural happenings described begin to seem plausible, given the author's gift of seamlessly blending tangible and spiritual elements into his storytelling. The always dysfunctional, often disturbing and sometimes hilariously funny behavior described drives home what growing up Indian in contemporary American society might feel like. At the same time, I can't help drawing a few parallels between growing up half a century ago in a frequently inebriated Irish family. Great storytelling would seem to be a universal refuge from chaos on the home front no matter what cultural crucible defines you.

Alexie is a wonderful writer - at once provocative and hilarious. I read this book several times when I first got my hands on it (it was one of a dozen or so books in English at the local library when I was living abroad) and have since shared it with many friends.I even bought a copy for my somewhat racist and homophobic father, hoping to expose him to a culture of which he knows little, and he too fell in love with the characters and their stories.

Alexie is the writer we all wish we could be. Once you put this book down you'll feel lonely, wistful, wrenched apart, and healed. The only answer will be to check out "Smoke Signals," the movie based on this beautiful horror, and Love Medicine, a slightly older work similar in its frenetic, harmonious yoga pretzels that leave you feeling tranquil. In this 20th anniversary edition the stories of Sherman Alexie ring ever as personal, lyrical and insightful as they did two decades ago. Having grown up just next door to the setting of these tales in Pend Oreille County, the scenes and city were as clear in my mind as ever. What was new when I first read it and again in reading this edition, was the peak into a very real and enduringly dynamic Native American culture. What Alexie is able to do in these context of these stories is open the reader up to the complex personhood behind the stereotypes; behind the rhetoric. I remember reading this as a young man in High School and how, even then, Thomas Builds-the-Fire spoke to me. Alexie acknowledges more readily now the autobiographical nature of these stories in many ways and it is in him we see not just Vincent but Thomas. Thomas was the modern day historian and wise man of the tribe though no one was willing to see it. He spoke the stories and words that needed to be spoken and needed to be heard both inside and outside of the reservation. Alexie does that as well, in this and in other books, capturing snapshots that speak to the humanity of history and its inherent subjectivity. This is what storytelling should be, telling us what we need to know that we had not realized and were even perhaps intent on avoiding. Things will never be what they were for any culture prior to expansionism, but hey, there is always a rising basketball star to put our hopes in. Worth getting the Anniversary Edition just for the final two additional stories.

This is an early collection of related stories from the author of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." The stories interconnect, and together paint a picture of growing up on the reservation is Eastern Washington State. Unlike in his novels, there isn't any clean conclusion to this collection, but rather a portrait of how life is, and I think maybe how life is for a lot of people, some of whom aren't Indians at all. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly; good vs bad. The road to destruction and yet a life of dreams where "imagination" takes you to places unknown. I feel that the author does not expect everyone to react well to this book as it is very vivid ! As he says "the pressure of straddling two worlds.

I was inspired to read this after seeing the film "Smoke Signals." I found the collection of short stories enjoyable and accessible. In an age when many people substitute politics as a pseudo religion, using stories as a form of veiled ideological evangelism, Alexie sticks to telling us stories of those he's known and grown up with. No "Indian spiritual and good/white man money-lover and bad" stereotypical dynamic here; just interesting stories of people in a different and complex American culture. On a personal note, when the stories were somewhat 'trip' and surrealistic, I didn't enjoy them as much. But that's just a matter of taste. The majority of these were right up my alley, and a good, solid bout of my kind of storytelling.

I loved this entire series as the storyline and lives of all the characters through the generations were revealed. The ups and downs, the good, the bad, the fortunate and the less fortunate characters all had their own personalities and I wanted to know more. Well done to the author.

I read this whole series. It is fantastic. I am always looking for new authors, and sometimes I am let down. I bought the first book, and it hooked me instantly. Before I was halfway through I bought the rest of the books. I hated for it to end!

“Only One Winner” is a masterpiece of Historical Fiction, showing off McBeath’s impeccable research into an era defined by industrialism, social revolution, urbanization, moral corruption, and political upheaval. This story is as compelling as it is heart-wrenching, and it’s nearly impossible to stand back and watch the characters of this book struggle without wanting to jump in between the pages to help out.After reading the three preceding novels in VL McBeath’s Ambition & Destiny Series, and having coped with such a shocking cliffhanger at the end of Book 3, I was more than anxious to get started on this installment of her 19th-century Historical Fiction/Romance multi-generational tale about hard-fought romances, women’s rights, family rivalries, and long-kept secrets... I must say, it was definitely worth the wait.McBeath’s novel is based on a true story she uncovered while researching her own family tree, and although the names and places have been altered, she provides keen insight into British family life during the late 1800’s as well as the oncoming socio-political changes that caused such turmoil during this era.In “Only One Winner”, McBeath deepens the rivalry between fathers and sons and focuses on those fearless and forthright women toiling at their sides, making great sacrifices to both endure and improve their family’s lot life. As it was in the prior chapters of this series, it is doubtful the men of this family would ever have had found the strength and fortitude to move forward in tough times without the unwavering love, protection, advice, and support of their mothers, wives, and daughters.I strongly recommend the Ambition & Destiny Series for anyone interested in learning about 19th-century Britain and the role of women in that era. As for Historical Romance fans... McBeath’s bold yet poignant series should definitely be included in your Top 10 Reads.

Part 4 of the Wetherby-Jackson saga, which spans several generations. William-Wetherby, William's eldest son, was very close to his parents and worked well with William when William was a partner in Mr Wetherby's business. Now that William has finally moved on to having his own business, he relied on William-Wetherby to provide the stable income, while he builds his business up, and it would have worked very well if it were not for Lydia, the fragile young beauty who reminds William so much of his dead Harriet that he falls in love with her. Lydia the fun, mischievous girl who is only a few years older than William-Wetherby and has so much in common with the young man that he is also smitten by her. But when William marries Lydia, the relationship between father and son could not take it any more.The whole series was a well written, well researched piece of work and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The characters are well developed and the storyline is gripping and absorbing. It has been very difficult to step back into 2018 once the book is closed, I could not help but feel so connected and so much part of the story that McBeath has written. Totally 5 stars!

Another captivating read about the continuing story of the Wetherby/Jackson families. It reflects the attitude of some people towards the vote being made available to men from different classes and also women suffrage. There is a quite despicable villain who seems to hold all the power and enjoys controlling other people’s lives. There are a number of sad moments and life seems quite hard for some while others live in a luxurious manner. If you enjoy family stories, this book should suit.I received a copy and have voluntarily and honestly reviewed it.

We have actual real life people in here and I feel like the author did a great job of figuring out how they would have acted realistically. Amazingly the best HARD BACK players guide I have ever seen of all of my video games. I am 73 y.o and an avidvideo game player, and I have waited 2 years for this, and it is here, and it is BEAUTIFUL with vividcolors and pictures and clear instructions. A thick & heavy book that will be handed down to myfamily heirloom. Quality & paper is top grade, something to be proud of. Yes, this is 5 Stars Plus +++++I highly recommend this book for any RDR2 fan...It is addicting and the most beautiful graphics I haveever seen in a game and this book shows you the way to increase your pleasure......ENJOY !!!

First of all, the print is small. I’m 58 and I use 275 magnification readers to paint military figures and other micro stuff these old eyes need help with. The font is so small I couldn’t read anything without an addition magnifying glass. Maybe it’s just me, but why in this day and age are we forced to read fine print smaller than the near invisible stuff on the bottom of a used car dealership’s finance contract.Secondly, the whole purpose for me to buy a book is to have access to the information when I know I’m not going to get a good signal for example, going to a mountainous region to absorb the peace and serenity of nature while unwinding. There’s so much information not in this guide. Sure, they touch base and say for example your horses tack can change the stats on the horse, but I couldn’t find any of the saddle, stirrup and blanket stats anywhere. What good is that if your away from your internet service and can’t plan, take notes for the things you would like in the game if they didn’t include it in the book. I’ve hunted for information about trains, fast travel etc and again, vague. It doesn’t say if your horse meets you there or do you have to find a stable. It doesn’t tell you how, or if fast travel is a one way trip. There’s no talk about any weapon calibers, the game includes it, but again we’re talking about being AFK. I’ve used bows on three star animals, perfect shot to the head, I skin the thing, thinking oh boy, I’m on my way to the dude that makes special outfits. I pick it up, it’s only two star. One head shot, no other damage and I get good after skinning, why? The book should expain penalties. I watched a video, they said if ya plug the thing full of holes, you’ll get a penalty, even after skinning the wound was above the cut of the skinning. The book is riddled with like just touching base but it leaves out so much. Heck, I’d pay more, or should I have too when the advertising says it’s a tell all. Sure, I expect to hear, well, we had to print the book and have it written before the end of the games design, or they’ll possibly change stats later which will render it useless. If that’s the case, why are some stats there? You get the drift of my meaning. I gave it three stars for paper quality, layout etc. there’s a ton of work that went into this book but it falls short in some aspects in my humble opinion.

I wasn't sure whether to order this book because part of the fun of playing a game is discovery and figuring out what is what. But this game in particular found me wondering what to do next in so many places. I searched the built-in Help system and got some answers, but they were often incomplete. There is a lot of free info online, but I didn't want to sort through it all and didn't want to week through hours of help videos. This is a HUGE game with a lot to discover and I didn't want to waste any more time being frustrated on how to accomplish a particular thing, or determine the best way of doing something. This book fills that need very well.This book is a reference and consists of 386 full-color illustrated pages. The 7 chapters include: 1)Primer 2)Missions 3)Exploration 4)Atlas 5)Weapons 6)Items 7)Extras.Each chapter has numerous sections or sub-chapters which are too many to list here.This book is LOADED with useful illustrations, charts and tables that visually describe each part of the game. Along the right column of each page is a "locator" which indicates the chapter and section that you are currently on.If you love the RDR franchise but have been frustrated with the game, then this book is for you. You can quickly lookup whatever is required to get you back on track enjoying the game. It's filled with tips, tricks and lots of detailed information that you can lookup quickly so you can focus more on having fun. In some ways it compensates for what the game should never have lacked in the first place. But I have found it a useful reference to get me back on track.

Yes it didn't arrive Friday when the game released and I didn't get it until today but other than that negative occurrence the guide itself covers everything in the game! Can also be useful for the trophy/achievement hunters by giving tips and making it known that some trophies/achievements are missable!

This guide is fantastic! It has everything necessary to get gold badges on story missions, it has locations of every collectible in the game, and it has good tools to get better at some of the side challenges like hunting, fishing, five finger filet, etc. It's an essential item for a completionist or trophy hunter. Would definitely recommend.

The content of this guide is great, but it seems many of the copies sent out have manufacturing defects. The pages of mine are all wavy and shrivelled at the top and bottom throughout the entire book, almost as if it got wet somehow. Very unfortunate as the book and content itself are really good. Wish that it didn’t arrive damaged :(

Just received my guide today and I couldn't be happier. Yes I didn't receive it on the day of the game release, but that is fine with me. Waiting 4 extra days is not a big deal (for me). The guide is jam packed with useful information, and I spent over 30 minutes reading all about the game before even playing. After reading how important paying attention to details in this game is, I am super happy I bought the guide. I would miss out on so many missions and events if I didn't have it. I recommend it.

The adventures of a 101 year old man are wilder than in the previous book, so expect a lot of unreal situations. The character of Allan has got a slight revamp, now, instead of the lucky, a bit daft unnaturally old man he's a wisecracker, an SJW, if you like. The fact that in the book there's no real conflict and Allan isn't once challenged morally by his peers or anyone, really, adds to the blandness of the book.As you read the book, you'll notice that it isn't an adventure book sprinkled with historical events, but a one-sided political commentary with the author's own ideas set as the only right way. Every political figure, who's in this book can be described with half a sentence. When I started reading this book, I expected a journey with the above mentioned, really a bit retarded (?) old guy, but the journey got fragmented and felt rushed in between the generalised "truths" pushed down your throat.On the positive side, some parts of the adventure, e.g. the swedish casket-businness and the african asparagus-plant were hilarious, so that's why I gave this book three stars. Pretty average, not the excellent funny book the first one was.

If you expect anything like the original book, you'll be disappointed. While the first book was original and fun read, this one feels like the author just wanted to make a bit of extra $$ squeezing the same old lemon.Didn't even bother to finish it. Total waste of money.

I thought the first books was the craziest thing I had ever read. When I checked Amazon to see what else the author had written, I found a sequel to the first book had just been published. I did not like his description of Donald Trump, so I've stopped reading it for now. But I will finish it just to enjoy more craziness. I gave my copy of the first book to my daughter and will circulate it through the family.

The book is really up to date in world politics, really funny and entertaining. Recommended for all news freaks of the world 😀 and the perfect holiday book.

It's not quite as good as his first adventure but it was an enjoyable humorous read. Happily Trump doesn't read or Sweden would be in trouble. It's, also, interesting to get a world view from a different country and see that we view the world the same. Hope the author will keep taking this senior on further journeys.

Funny. Smart. A few serious thoughts to keep in the back of your mind - eg the disconcerting last page. Give us more - Hundred and two year old man.

This is a sequel to “The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared.” It is just as much fun to read. This book is current with current world leaders. Need I say more?

It's a decent read, but nothing like the original witty humor from before.
